“ExcUSE me?!”
the thing i love about social animals is they necessarily have a concept of manners which means that you can be rude to them. not threatening, but rude. and they’ll be annoyed at you for it.
character in a movie: Oh no, angry dog, please don’t bite me!
the dog: I’m at work! I’m doing so good at being at work! I’m barking because my handler gave the sign ‘bark’! I am going to get such a good grade in being a dog actor, which is completely possible to achieve, and normal to want! I am doing a great job! I am proud of myself for doing such a great job! I love this, because I’d make it physically impossible to get anything done if I wasn’t enjoying it! I’m barking!
I love seeing dogs and wolves in movies because they’re acting so vicious but also their tails are wagging so hard unless the post-processing guys specifically edited out the tails (which is slightly less obvious but also hilarious in a different way once you spot it).
This is why I love the dog in the original casting of The Thing so damn much. I have never seen an acting dog move with such a deliberate, calm intent. It was like every single motion and gesture this animal made was intentional.
Apparently, according to the behind-the-scenes documentation, this dog was just fuckin like that. Almost never, if at all, looked at the camera crews and production teams. Never excitedly wagged his tail on set no matter how much of a good boy he was being. If he did, it was the same… deliberate motions.
His name was Jed, and even though he’s a dog, he deserves an oscar. He was an exceptionally good boy.
Jed also played the role of White Fang in the 90s Disney film version!
I honestly can’t imagine a better portrayal of a stoic, aloof White Fang, who gradually softens, than Jed. Good boy.
That dog knows his job, and knows he’s damn good at it, and knows he’s probably better at his job than his coworkers.
That dog was delivering straight up Shakespearean performances, and he probably was saddled with human coworker who had to make use of such unprofessional things as second takes.
My condolences, Jed, my condolences.
Just for fun! Let’s take a look at the most cited meanings for ATLA names.
Aang - When his name is shown in written form, it is composed of the Chinese characters 安 (ān) meaning "peace, quiet" and 昂 (áng)meaning "raise, lift". A fitting name for an airbender who will save the world!
Katara - Taken from the Arabic word قطرة (qatra) meaning "raindrop, droplet". A gentle and poetic name for waterbender who is starting out.
Sokka - Derived from the Japanese phrase “sou ka”, meaning "I understand" or "Is that so?". A reference to both his skeptical and analytical nature, as well as his comic relief.
Toph - Toph was written as 北方拓芙, giving her name the meaning "expanding lotus". The name itself is not a genuine Chinese name, and may have been intended as a pun on the English word "tough". When combined with her last name Beifong, you get “lotus flower expanding northward”, a reference to Toph opening up and making friends, but also because she is from the Southern city of Gaoling and literally travels north with the Gaang.
Zuko - Fictional name written with different meanings in the show. His wanted poster uses 祖 (zǔ) from Chinese meaning "ancestor, forefather" combined with 寇 (kòu) meaning "bandit, robber". Likely meant to portray Zuko as a traitor to his family and people. However, it’s also written as 蘇 (sū) meaning "to regain consciousness" combined with 科 (kē) meaning "sort, class", which is probably the true meaning to his name referring to how Zuko will redeem the Fire Nation and royal family by redeeming himself.
Azula - Fictional name derived from Portuguese, Galician, and Spanish azul meaning "blue" (of Persian origin). A reference to her blue flames.
Want me to cover other ATLA names? Just ask!
Alright here’s a few more!
Suki - Either from Japanese Suki meaning “beloved” or Tsuki meaning “moon”. Both references to her relationship with Sokka.
Mai - A bit confusing because her pronunciation and spelling don’t match. Either from the Japanese 麻衣 (mai) meaning "linen robe", a reference to how she hides her knives in her sleeves. Or the Chinese 梅 (méi) meaning "plum", possibly a reference to her hair buns or to her apathetic personality since sour plum is a popular flavor in Asia.
Ty Lee - Derived from Chinese 泰 (tài) meaning "big, large" combined with 麗 (lì) meaning "beautiful, lovely". Likely a reference to her larger than life yet cutesy personality.
Yue - From Chinese 月 (yuè) meaning "moon". It could also be referencing 玥 (yuè) meaning "pearl", given her connection to both the moon and ocean.
Appa - From Korean (아빠) meaning “dad”.
Momo - From Japanese 桃 (momo) meaning "peach". May also be a reference to Nepalese dumplings which are also called momos.
Jet - Derived from Devanagari जेट (jet) meaning an intense black color. Likely meant to reference Jet’s black and white thinking.
Iroh - Fictional name so there’s no clear meaning but here is my best guess! From Japanese 彩 (iro) meaning "color" combined with Japanese 葉 (ha) meaning "leaf". Likely a reference both to Iroh drawing wisdom from all the nations/the dragons (hence colors) and to his love of tea leaves. As a whole, the word iroha refers to a Japanese poem.
It's great until it's not.
It's great until he develops an addiction and starts spending all the money on it.
It's great until you realize he's abusive and hid it long enough to get you totally in his power (happened to my great-great-aunt Irene).
It's great until he gets injured and can't work anymore.
It's great until he dies and your options are "learn a marketable skill fast" or "marry the first eligible man you can find."
It's great until he wants child #7 and your body just can't take another pregnancy, but you can't leave or risk desertion because he's your meal ticket.
It's great until he tries to make you run a brothel as a get-rich-quick scheme and deserts you when you refuse, leaving your sisters to desperately fundraise so your house doesn't get foreclosed on (happened to my great-great-aunt Mamie).
It's great until you want to leave but you can't. It's great until you want to do something else with your life but you can't. It's great. Until. It's. Not.
I won't lie to you and say nobody was ever happy that way. Plenty of women have been, and part of feminism is acknowledging that women have the right to choose that sort of life if they want to.
But flinging yourself into it wholeheartedly with no sort of safety net whatsoever, especially in a period where it's EXTREMELY easy for him to leave you- as it should be; no-fault divorce saves lives -is naive at best and dangerous at worst.
Have your own means of support. Keep your own bank account; we fought hard enough to be allowed them. Gods willing, you never need that safety net, but too many women have suffered because they needed it and it wasn't there.
speaking as a historian of the 19th and 20th centuries, it's not the "tradwife lifestyle" we hate. It's the fact that women didn't have the right to vote until 1917, or the ability to own bank accounts until 1971, and STILL don't have the Equal Rights Amendment that's been held up since 1973 that would prevent things like pay gaps and other biases! We hate the fact that people didn't have the choice, and there are those out there who actively want to take it away!
The most soul crushing thing is being in your mid to late 20's and comparing yourself with your peers. One of them is married, one has an amazing job, one just bought a house, one is pregnant, one is very successful. And you look at yourself and you have none of these accomplishments, you still feel like a kid inside, you're the same age but really you feel so much younger, so behind. You're living in different worlds, different lives, so far apart. And you observe them and all you want is to be like them, all grown, all independant and functional. And then the fear creeps in: What if I will never get there? What if my mental issues are always gonna keep me in the same place? And that feeling, that huge fear and doubt and incapability, I wonder if that's what they meant when they talk about a "quarter life crisis". You're gonna get there, in your own time. This is a normal experience millions of people our age have and have always had. It will be ok.
And then one day you're in your mid to late 40's. A lot of your friends with the "perfect" marriages are divorced now; the ones with the "perfect" jobs burned out early, or succumbed to the grind. Some have kids, some don't. Some found their passions at work, some crashed and burned spectacularly, some are working a job for the paycheck to support their hobby of making their little clay animals or tending their backyard chickens. You? You know what you want, now. It's not the same as what you wanted when you were 25. In fact, you're kind of glad you didn't get those things then, because you became wise, at some point, while you weren't looking. You know now, in a way you never did when you were young, that your brain isn't actually that weird, and there are so many people like you, and all of them, including you, deserve to feel good and loved and cared for. You still feel like you're about 12 on the inside, but everybody else does too. You've learned to be kind, not least to yourself. You're happy more often than you're sad. You have people you love richly, and who love you. You laugh all the time. One day you sit by the lake in the late afternoon autumn sunlight and you think about being 25, and how you were convinced your life was already over, and you smile, and think to yourself, I'm so glad I'm here.
if you want to actually start to end homelessness, you need to give homeless people unconditional homes, including when we use them to do drugs or sit around drinking. either housing is unconditional or it isn’t
someone sitting at home alone, an active alcoholic, squandering your charity, drinking all day is better situation than a street homeless alcoholic. someone using drugs in your charity house is better than them doing the same w no shelter
most of you would not like most street homeless people, I definitely don’t and didn’t when I was street homeless. for every one person who uses unconditional shelter to turn themselves around, someone else will do jack shit and very slowly, if ever, work through the issues that made them homeless, will maybe never be able to live independently. still better than street homelessness, still worth doing. ultimately either you believe that shelter should be universal or you don’t
homeless people actually can’t be rehabilitated if you want to end homelessness. we either affirm the right to shelter for the worst drunken, lying, filthy, cheating, self destructive homeless people that exist, genuinely irredeemable wankers, or we concede that shelter is not a right
This post is the distilled essence of everything I believe in.
“What about people who do [X] on purpose?” Yes, even them. Did I stutter when I said “EVERYONE” DESERVES A HOME?!
the idea of public restrooms as "women's spaces" continues to confound me. you know who I hope is in a public bathroom when I go in?? no one. I would prefer no one else be in the bathroom. and if someone else is in the bathroom I am going to ignore them as much as possible. I did not go into the bathroom to connect with other women. I went into the bathroom to piss and/or shit. it's a toilet's space, not a women's space. shut the fuck up and let trans people piss and shit in peace. let's all continue to avoid eye contact with each other and any and all interaction in the toilet's space.
Also when people talk about this stuff do they know a sign on a door isn't going to stop someone determined to commit a crime? Like the level of insecurities and stupidity around this stuff is beyond confusing.
I think the reason a lot of leftists struggle with disability justice is that they haven't moved past the concept that discrimination isn't bad because it's objectively "wrong." yes, sexists are objectively wrong when they try to claim women are dumber than men. yes, antisemites are objectively wrong that jewish people are inherently greedy and run the state. yes, racists are wrong when they try to claim that white people are the superior race. and so on.
but then with disabled people, there are a lot of objective truths to the discrimination we face. people with IDs/LDs do fall behind and struggle with certain concepts. physically disabled people are often weaker and less capable of performing demanding tasks than able bodied people. many of us with mental illnesses are more reckless and less responsible. a lot of us are dependent on others and do not contribute much "worth".
and guess what? disabled people still deserve a place in the world. disabled people still deserve the supports they need. because they are people, and that should be enough to support them and believe they deserve a place at the table.
if your only rebuttal against discrimination is its objective inaccuracies, you are meeting bigots where they are at. you are validating the very concept that if and when people are truly incapable of being equal to the majority, that means they are worth less. this causes some leftists to then try to deny the objective realities of disabled people and/or become ableist themselves.
your rallying behind marginalized groups should start and end with the fact that people are completely worthy of life and equity, because they are fellow human beings and that should, frankly, be enough.
halflings love their new giant children
“So, Mister…GRAAAAGH Underhill-by-Sackville, is it?” “Indeed.” “You’re an Orc, but you don’t mention any clan….” “Oh, I’m culturally Hobbitish, I was adopted at a very young age. And I’m very keen on this position you have open at your trading house.” “The guard position?” “Heavens, no. I barely know which end of a sword goes into the miscreant. I am a certified accountant, and eager to make my mark in respectable society.”
I want to read about the Halfling who was responsible for Recent Events, personally.
if you must know, her name is Tabitha Smallburrow and over a handful of years she adopted 3 orcs, 2 tieflings, 7 tabaxi (had mistaken them for a litter of kittens when they were put up for adoption in the neighboring city) and finally one very unwilling and fully grown dwarf
People... watch out for these things!
The saying applies with more than usual force here: if you're not paying for it, you're not the customer: you're the product being sold. (And maybe you're the product being sold even if you are paying for it.)
DO NOT MAKE YOUR PERSONAL PHYSICAL DATA AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE WHO COULD THEN SELL IT TO THOSE INVESTED IN USING IT TO SURVEIL YOU AND POTENTIALLY CHARGE YOU WITH CRIMES.
$20 to rent a movie online for 48 hours i need yall to get so real right now bc that is insane. “that’s the average cost” which is a problem!! if im paying $20 i better get the film on dvd to have and watch forever
and before i get the “what about seeing ig at the movie theater” comments
i dont have a 60 foot screen and high tech surround sound audio and fancy seats at home. i will pay $20 to watch a movie once with friends for the experience in the theater. i will absolutely not pay $20 to watch a movie on my laptop lmfao
£15/$20 is the price of a fucking DVD. That you keep. I'm not paying that much to rent fuck all, you must be joking.
Are all of you really too young to remember how it used to be before corporations stopped selling you things that became yours in perpetuity after you paid for them and started charging you rent for everything?
finally decided to sit down and watch the incredibles again. there will be no commentary because i’m gonna be too busy watching it
okay i just gotta say
having been married for 3 years now (almost), i really love how bob & helen argue. when i was a kid it just came off to me that everyone in this movie was being super mean for no reason but when you watch it as an adult it’s different. i really appreciate that even when bob is frustrated/angry he basically never lashes out at helen or the kids, his problem is he’s withdrawn and existantialling. i also really appreciate that when they do fight they’re actually more expressing their frustration than attacking each other. it’s only later when things get real that helen (understandably) gets really angry.
also edna’s advice is actually really good, helen’s just melting down over the idea of losing her husband (which is sweet and helps us understand her character) but edna tells her to confront it immediately, hold bob to account by leaning into his concern (all his heroics being forgotten) and reminding him that she’s a super, too. direct action is a blessing in communication.
i love how the movie communicates bob’s competency, like he’s actually handling all the twists and turns of the situation rapidly deteriorating very well, the only thing that throws him off is when his family gets involved. we also see helen’s competency in the plane scene and how she immediately knows something’s up when no one responds on the radio
syndrome is such a fucking good villain, saying ‘i seem to recall you prefer to work alone’ and laughing at him when he believes he’s murdered the guy’s wife and kids???? holy fuck
as previously mentioned bob breaking down and sobbing alone in the containment room shaped my personality
ah the good old days of 2004 when having a voluptuous mom ass was a bad thing. good riddance, we don’t miss you.
also the it’s a neat little parallel to bob’s body image struggles, they really went to great lengths to showcase that these people are equals & soulmates
the kids are really well-written too, they feel very authentically their age and they both have motivations, the writing does a great job of showing how the gravity of the situation sinks in for them and forces them to rise to meet it. dash especially fascinates me in this movie because he’s just the right balance between immature and starting, just starting to get that life is a big deal and stakes are real and you’ve got to care about what you’re doing and try to do the right thing in every situation. the way the kids instinctively protect each other even though all we’ve seen of them so far in the movie is antagonism is just *clenches fist* so good
The Incredibles is incredible on every level
I appreciate the "there will be no commentary because i’m gonna be too busy watching it" followed by 8 of the truest takes on the movie, respect.
From Palestinian poet Najwan Darwish
i hope this is alright for me to add, but this poem references a line from one of hitler's speeches ordering the genocide of polish jews. at the end of the speech, he justified the genocide by saying "who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the armenians?" in a very literal way, genocides are interconnected and used to justify one another. after all, the holocaust was partially modeled after the united states' genocide of indigenous people. this is why it is so important to remember the victims of all genocides across history, and why it is so important for oppressed peoples to stand together in solidarity.
Also, the British invented the term "concentration camp", and the American genocide of native Americans, specifically brainwashing boarding schools, was based on British methods used on the Welsh, Irish, and Scottish.
leg refences
Reblogging this not only for artists but also for people who write werewolf (and other animal transformation) fiction. If a human turned into a wolf, their knee joints would not reverse– what some fic writers mistake for the knee is actually the ankle. A wolf’s hind feet are relatively long, and they are always walking in way roughly analogous to human “tip-toeing.”
KA Applegate I’m looking at you
KA Applegate once wrote about someone’s spine wrapping around/down one leg as the other leg shriveled into nothingness - I’m pretty sure she never intended morphing to actually involve logical transitions between analogous structures. Now werewolf writers, on the other hand…
Adjacent to every control-freak misogynist going after abortion is a control freak going after children. #RightWingValues
Adjacent? That venn diagram is basically a circle
The Civil War was raging, the state didn't actually exist as a territory of the US government until 1863. They broke away from New Mexico territory until the war started, Jefferson Davis declared it a territory, then the Union took it back in 1862 and Lincoln established it as a territory. Rebel forces retreated and they had a "state government in exile" in Texas, and insurgent activity in the territory until the war ended. So why are we citing this law again when the entire situation was CHAOS?
