Unpopular opinion, but the authors in Ancient Greece made more complex female characters than any Hollywood tries to promote us.

From Clytemnestra to Antigone, to Helen of Troy all had their own character development, ideas, ambitions even during a time in ancient Greece when women had limited freedom.

Even Euripides who wrote Medea said that he understands what Medea does is awful but..is she really the one to blame?

This is something I keep thinking about. Academia goes on and on about how horrible lives Greek women had, that they were viewed almost like objects, and yet all the actual ancient art and literature pictures them as eloquent people with their desires, personalities , sense of honour, morals or lack thereof and opinions. Several have loving husbands, several have tumultuous relationships in which they give as much as they take, they criticise, they protest, they yell, they can even turn violent. Other men are pictured yearning for their wives, others to be weary of them, others to low-key fear them. And don’t let me go into the goddesses, like that time Athena sent Ares the God of War crying back to Olympus lol

There is no question that they didn’t have political rights and nowhere near as many rights as men in general but within their field of action and the kind of people they had around them, they could be respected and heard.

I don’t know it’s weird how western historians keep suggesting they were just voiceless reproductive machines, as if no men could fall in love or develop companionship with them or take decisions together.

In any case, ancient literature gave women much more presence and a much stronger voice than academia or modern retellings and interpretations would make you think.

All this, yes! And to bring it to a smaller scale, the house domain belonged to the women. They were entrusted with running people under them in order to ensure all basic things for survival (clothing/cloth production, food, clean water, hygiene, house economics, children's upbringing, organizing events etc). That's serious. Without these things the house (oikos) and the society (demos) collapses. Even ancient Greek men advised each other to marry women who are good at running and managing houses otherwise all would go to hell. The house is work - especially in 500BCE - , and this work shouldn't be undervalued.

The society was undoubtedly patriarchal and women had many disadvantages. But reality has some distance from how westerners think ancient Greek women were. Greek women never were the "docile" and "subservient" stereotype even in antiquity.

funniest thing would be if when Queen Elizabeth dies or steps down and Charles is all ready to assume the throne, here comes King Arthur, Excalibur in hand, sauntering back from Avalon like “oof what a nap! thanks for keeping the chair warm I’m back to be king again”

like, given that “King Arthur isn’t actually dead, he’ll be back to be King again someday” is, like, an actual aspect of the legend and a thing that a lot of people purport to believe, has anyone ever actually tried it? showing up to buckingham palace claiming to be Arthur Pendragon, The Once And Future King, and assume the throne? does the british government have a protocol for checking whether someone claiming to be King Arthur actually is? does parliament have a secret picture of the Real Excalibur kept under lock and key, only viewed if someone claims to be King Arthur, that they can use to confirm or refute the identity of alleged Kings Arthur? if not, how do they deter every jackass with a sward from pretending to be him? does filing a false King Arthur report constitute treason?

The rules are simple. “Arthur” has to show up with a sword. They give the sword to the Lady of the Lake, and if she throws it back to the claimant, he’s legit and gets to be king again.

So the test for King Arthur’s identity falls to the even less officially identifiable Lady of the Lake.  No one can even agree on which Lady, or which lake, is the official one, much less how to tell if you’ve got The Lady of The Lake.  All of which suggests that all you need to accomplish this is one (1) sword, a willing female acquaintance, and a nearby body of water.

There isn’t even any requirement for “Arthur” to catch the sword, so the Lady can just javelin an epee right at him.

Well when you look at it that way, one might conclude that strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

Good news: if you’re currently laying around and not producing anything, you are a credit to your species.

I’m an ant biologist and I’d like to point out that ants also spend a significant percentage of the time doing nothing.

Turns out sometimes the most evolutionary useful thing you can do is chill and not wear yourself to shreds, whether mammal or insect. It helps you deal with emergencies and adapt to change. Plus, you can act as living food storage!

That last part is probably more an ant thing than a human thing, but hey, live your dreams.

it’s also a bear thing, which absolutely explains me

Doing absolutely fuck-all is how antarctic sea sponges live to be over 10,000 years old, so live your best, longest, laziest life.

Remember lions? Fellow apex predators?

Yeah, they spend 16-20 hours of the day laying around, socializing, raising Cubs and napping.

The last 4-8 hours are spent hunting.

Wait wait, they’re not a primate so they don’t count.

How about Orangutans?

Well, they spend 90% of their time awake just hanging out in food-rich areas, eating fruit and leaves, socializing, raising children, and chilling.

Well, they’re not people so it doesn’t-

How about Stone Age people in Europe?

They probably worked 3-5 hours per day, every day. (Though seasonal changes in food scarcity could change that)

Laborers in ancient Egypt worked 8 hours, with an hour break at lunch. They did this for 8 days, then rested 2 days. That sounds familiar. Except… they also had regular time off for festivals and holidays, and only worked for about 18 out of every 50 days.

Artisans in imperial Rome generally worked from 6am to Noon, and then had the rest of the day off… and only worked for half the year, due to all the holidays and festivals they got off.

But that’s too easy, what about a Peasant in medieval England?

6-8 hours per day, with Sundays off, Farm workers put in longer hours at harvest time but worked shorter days in winter when there are fewer hours of daylight. Economist Juliet Schor estimates that in the period following the Plague they worked no more than 150 days a year, due to the long holidays and many festivals.

Ugh, let’s go poorer. 17th century France. Starvation was afoot for the working poor!

During the reign of King Louis XIV, the workers of France had it tough, and hunger for the poorest was a fact of life. The typical working day was as much as 12 hours long, but two hours were set aside midday for lunch and perhaps an afternoon nap. Nevertheless, the Ancient Régime is said to have also guaranteed peasants, labourers and other workers a total of 52 Sundays, 90 rest days and 38 religious holidays off per year, meaning they worked just 185 out of 365 days.

So what changed?

The industrial revolution, baybe~~

New factory owners could work their employees to the bone due to a lack of regulation and abundance of cheap labour.

The typical factory worker in mid 19th-century England toiled away for a soul-destroying 16 hours a day, six days a week, 311 days per year!

THAT nightmare became the standard by which western society began to judge “work-life balance” and anything gentler than the industrial factory’s unfettered brutality is considered “softness”

(So many people died being mangled in those machines. Hair handkerchiefs went into style during American industrialization because working women would otherwise get their hair caught in the machines, and be either scalped or be bodily pulled inside to die…. But that’s a horror for another time)

Americans in 2020 worked an average of 8.5 hours per day on weekdays, plus another 5 hours on weekends.

Taking out federal holidays and weekends, we work 262 days per year. Most of us get 5-9 sick days to take per year. (Yes, a fixed number, no matter how sick you really are), and usually either no paid vacation, or 7-15 days paid vacation, depending on seniority and the company. Unpaid vacation doesn’t have a max, but taking it often risks you getting fired.

Even comparing against the poorest laborers in ancient history the current working structure for humans is, frankly, inhumane.

We are mammals. Let us rest. Let us celebrate holidays and attend festivals. Let us attend to our homes and families.

Even the ultra wealthy folks who got their heads chopped off gave us more time off than this!!!

Someone in the comments said something like “humans are instinctively industrious and productive, as social creatures!”

Buddy, that’s a lie fed to you by capitalism.

In our default state, we attend to our families yes, but we also party like hell, lounge around, and make fantastic works of art just to be proud of ourselves. We made beautiful things for the joy of creating them.

Stone Age humans may have spent a couple hours hunting and gathering, but DEFINITELY spent loads of time painting every available surface. Time and weather washed most of it away, but some places like Arizona and Colorado still preserve a few of the endless murals made by ancient hands.

Evidence shows that the ancient world was COVERED in paintings and etchings - just saturated with images of birds and beasts and humans, sunsets and cool weather. We invented mythologies and painted about them. We did something impressive, and painted about it. We taught our children how to paint and lifted them into our shoulders so they could mark the ceiling.

In our most base state, humans will work enough to survive, but our instincts demand we use all other time to create art. We want to communicate. To make connections.

“Working” or “being productive” is not on that list.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

like, it’s not like I asked your vesicle fusion mediating proteins to cleave and block acetylcholine release... you can’t keep deflecting responsibility for your own actions onto me just because I “put something in your food”

“you’re trying to kill me” yeah well have you tried being less sensitive

Aug. 17, 2021

Im gonna share some unpopular(ish) opinions. I'll put their names first so you can skip if theyre your comfort character. I wanna spark some discussion! Pls be civil tho.

Dabi

The LoV dont deserve to be coddled. dabi didn't commit any crimes till he joined the lov. its stated he wasnt a criminal. it's not endeavor's fault for his actions. if he had been younger and running around killing ppl then i could understand blaming endeavor but dabi's a grown man who didn't do shit for 10 fuckin years.

Toga

toga basically went thru conversion therapy. i can understand her being angry. But being angry doesn't mean you get to kill people or stalk them.

Shigaraki

shigaraki's been groomed since he was little and we both know he'd be killed if he went to the heroes. he doesnt have much of a choice.

Mr. Compress

compress is just a dumb fuck. thats a whole dumb fuck. which is sad because he's so smart and capable.

Overhaul

overhaul literally just wanted peace in the world but went about it all the wrong ways. he's also like 19-20. his mind is still growing. if people stopped viewing him as a villain he'd be a really good person to have on your side

Kurogiri (this one is positive)

kurogiri is the only villain who deserves a redemption arc imo

Hawks

also hawks is way overrated. he doesnt show up till season 5 and he spends the whole time being an ass. gonna be honest his 1 good scene is when he takes tokoyami flying

Kaminari

denki's overrated by so much. he's also not nearly as dumb as the fandom wants to believe. He's also just as bad as mineta when it comes to being a perv. He's maybe even worse. But yall aint ready for that.

Bakugo

bakugo's a really toxic person. like. more so than mineta. he's violent and doesnt care who he hurts. he's basically mini endeavor. all he cares about is being the best. He's got nothing caring inside him. Nobody who purposefully makes kids cry deserves to be a hero.

Twice

Twice kills people. You cant say ''he didnt do anything wrong'' HES A MURDERER. He went on a mission to kidnapped and kill children. Yall can stan him but you're blind if you cant see what he's done wrong. Also he's a fucking pedophile???? Like why are yall okay with that. Toga was 16 when they met. He was 30.

Pls no outright hate of a character. We can criticize but any hate isnt acceptable

Avatar

I agree with most of your opinions on the villains, except for Overhaul. 19-20, while young, is by no means too young to know right from wrong. His actions were not of a child. He TRAUMATISED a child, possibly for life. And he had no outside influence manipulating him, like Shigaraki did.

As for hawks, i may be a bit biased, but i definitely think he’s very important. In a way, he’s basically another Shigaraki, except he was groomed by the side of the heroes instead of all for one. And I hear things are going really well with him in the manga.

I definitely don’t agree with your opinion on Kaminari. The worst he did was occasionally trying to ogle. He didn’t grope people, or try to watch as they bathed naked. He didn’t try to peep into the girls locker room. Mineta did all of that and more. So idk how kaminari could be worse than him. I will admit though that Kaminari does have some perverted tendencies, as well as a bit of misogyny (judging from his fight w that girl from 1B during the Sports Festival)

Now I also don’t agree with your opinion on Bakugo. You seem to give leeway to the villains based on outside influence, age, and other extenuating circumstances. Why not be as graceful towards Bakugo? He, too, is a product of the society that raised him, and he’s getting better. His character development is obvious and really well done imo. His attitude is changing without his personality changing with it. And he’s 16! He’s a child, and has a lot more time to grow. And you can’t say he cares for no one when he’s trying to get better and teamwork, repeatedly tutoring Kirishima, fighting beside Midoriya, saving him when he’s in trouble, trying to help him use his powers properly, not to mention all the stuff he does in the manga. He used to be a bully, but he clearly regrets it. He is a little like Endeavour bc they both want to be number one and they both like complete victories. And they’re both trying to atone for their mistakes. But Bakugo wouldn’t want to live through his children, especially seeing as he overheard Todoroki’s story during the Sports Festival, and is also seeing how Endeavour trying so hard to be better still isn’t enough to fix his family.

Although i have to say, you’re the first person I’ve seen that brought up how messed up Twice’s love for Toga is, so THANK YOU. I’ve always wondered about that.

The only “Not All Men” post I’ll reblog.

To break down rape culture, we need to stop teaching people that men can’t help themselves; they absolutely can look for enthusiastic consent, and they must. This is absolute bare minimum decent human being behaviour.

Also, if you stop teaching people that “men can’t help themselves” it tends to go hand in hand with teaching the fact that no, men do not “always want it”– which in turn is beneficial for those men who might themselves be assaulted, regardless of the rapist’s gender. Enthusiastic, mindful consent applies to everyone.

Gen Z culture is:

Hyping up everyone around you, telling them not to call themselves ugly, etc,  then going and saying you’re ugly af.

Please reblog, this is so important.
