My favorite genre of TV show is one where the executives proposed that they needed a show in a franchise that appealed to a younger audience or sold more toys and the actual director decided to go fucking ham and make an actually great piece of media that is some of the best in the franchise

All cartoons from the 80s and 90s were supposed to sell toys, clothes, games, and/or breakfast cereal.

This is so funny cause I always felt Batman Beyond was really dark and just not a kid cartoon. But then again I remember I also watched, Conan, Robocop and heard of a Rambo cartoon so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

Those were different times.

We had the Terminator and Aliens themed action toys.

Kids were forged in fire, not shielded like snowflakes.

And yes. Batman Beyond had some pretty hardcore themes and visuals. Remember the mummified guy who could control the earth?

Oh yeah, watching movies aimed at adults while you were a kid was seen as a mark of pride!

Mhm I think I didn’t see that one. But I remember how the beginning was about some gruesome bio weapon. Then there was the bit with gangers getting cybernetics from a catfished cyber surgeons. Or that Craven-like guy who was operated on because his spine was damaged.

Today I was at a con and I ran into a guy cosplaying as Kratos and his (presumed) son was with him dressed as Atreus. When I saw them I noticed the kid, who looked maybe eight or nine, was pretty engrossed in some sort of video game demo, so I asked the dad “Hey! Can I get your picture? If he’s busy he doesn’t have to be in it!”

And the dad goes “Sure!” Then says in this low Kratos voice “Atreus! Here boy!” And this kid straight up THROWS the controller down, pulls a plastic knife off his hip, and poses next to his dad with the most determined “>:(“ expression I’ve ever seen
