Me, internally: "Mafia AU" is a terrible concept because some content creators use it to romanticize a form of crime based on brutal violence, economic abuse, corruption, toxic masculinity, misoginy, and harmfully associate organized crime with italians. Do these people actually think that mafia is made of nicely dressed men with sexy accents who smoke cigars, treat their women like queens and occasionally handle guns? Hell no, their "code of honor" is total hypocrisy. You can't make them appalling. "The good ones" are dragged in the system against their will and their only way out is death. Mafia destroys shops and leaves families in the streets. Mafia drowns men in concrete. Mafia kills women, elders and children for honor and revenge. Mafia corrupts cops and politicians. Mafia treats their wives like trophies and properties. Do these fans know mafia henchmen have killed and dissolved a literal child in acid when their boss ordered to do so? Without hesitation? That shit is real and my country is ashamed of it. People on the internet don't like mafia, they just like their beloved "sexy aesthetic" of vintage cinema and I wish they were more mindful about this topic. However, I recognize that fiction is "just fiction" and I don't wanna ruin anyone's fun with their AUs- but I do wish somebody did a little research, at least. When it's italian, because organized crime is everywhere, yes even Canada, the gang is called either 'mafia' or 'ndrangheta' or 'camorra', or even something else, depending from the region the family is from. I recognize some mafia characters in media are accurately evil or caricatures made for funsies, but seeing so much fan-made content of characters in 1950s fashion mindlessly tagged as "mafia au" when it's more of a "everyone is italian-american and wears fancy clothes au" bothers me a lot :/
