every once in a while i remember my “???% only appears when mob sustains fatal injuries that otherwise would have killed him because it’s the only time his will supersedes his desire to repress it” theory/headcanon and make myself sad
okay so
despite how important he is to the show there are only 4 time in canon (not including the crossover chapter) where ???% unambiguously appears, and then 2 times that are kind of ambiguous but i’m inclined to believe those aren’t actually him for reasons ill get into in a second.
the only times we definitively for sure see ???% appear are:
- after being thrown headfirst against a wall by someone twice his size
- after being strangled for several minutes by teru (if you watch this scene closely in the anime you can actually see a moment where something in his neck breaks)
- in mogamiland when his “vessel” is destroyed
- after being hit by a van going full speed
aside from mogamiland, these are all instances where a person could die, but it’s equally likely that they could survive just go unconscious. the reason i don’t think this is the case is one of those ambiguous appearances i mentioned.
if this was actually ???%, there is no fucking way he would just stand there unmoving while his brother was being kidnapped. every single appearance we get of him is accompanied by him unintentionally destroying everything in his surrounding area and moving unstoppably towards his goal.
i would guess this is ???% trying to break through and mob, while unconscious, still being enough “himself” to restrain his true will.
the only other time we get an ambiguous ???% appearance is in the fire scene, and honestly since this is anime exclusive im going to chalk it up more to a mistake or a difference of vision than anything.
(manga version, the percentage is just going out of control, at no point is “???% represented)
while 100% tenacity definitely puts mob’s behavior closer to when he’s ???% than most other percentages, he is still, crucially, in control of his powers. he didn’t destroy the house or hurt any civilians just by existing in their vicinity like we see in the confession arc.
it also makes a lot of sense for what we know of mob as a character. he truly believes that if he exercises his will, people won’t like him and he’ll lose the connections he has. the only time he can let his own wants supersede his desire to keep other people in his life is when that “want” is not to die.

ok so im going to preface this by saying i am the pickiest person in the world when it comes to fanfiction. like. i am not joking, i have closed fanfictions before because i thought that the writer made a character's music taste ooc.
im a big fan of ageswaps IF they acknowledge the far reaching consequences reigen not being present in mob's early life would have on him and everyone else in his generation. the vast majority of ageswaps are not to my taste because theyre a bit too generous with how everyone would have grown up without the influence of a mob who met reigen.
specifically teru is generally made like, kind of a self obsessed celebrity when like.
