30 Days of Deity Devotion in One Post - Aphrodite

I don’t have ANY patience to do one post every day for devotion. Like, no patience and not enough memory, so I’ll resume every single day of deity devotion in this post, and hopefully it’ll be nice to read and maybe do some research.

30 Days of Deity Devotion was created by @alaskanlesbian

1 - A basic introduction

She’s very energetic and enthusiastic and it’s very pleasing to be hanging out with her. We dance together sometime, it’s really fun! Also she’s my matron.

2 - How did you became first aware of her?

We are introduced to greek mythology since very early, as kids, so I must’ve known her for quite some time, though she only called me in December. I think it’s because now she feels that I’m ready to work with her.

3 - Symbols and icons of this deity

Bees; Red, pink and yellow with pink tip roses; A calm shore with no aggressive waves; A pink sky; Deep red lipsticks; Sea foam; Shells; Apple; Sweet scents, especially ripe apple; Laughter and smiles

4 - Favorite myth or myths of Aphrodite

The one I like the most is Aphrodite and Adonis love. It’s tragical, yet beautiful. I get sad every time.

5 - Members of the family

I personally like best the version were she rose from the sea, but there’s also a version were she’s daughter of Zeus and Dione.

6 - Other related deities and entities

Ares, her main lover; her other various lovers; Athena, her main rival; The erotes; Astarte and Ishtar, goddesses she was based from

7 - Names and epithets

Ourania, Pandemos, Areia, Philomedes, Nikephoros

8 - Variations of this deity

The epithets listed above and Astarte and Ishtar, as they’re deities Aphrodite was based from.

9 - Common mistakes about her

That she’s all fluffy and pastel-pink. Like, all the time. Or that she’s petty and superficial.

Bitch no.

She can be fluffy and pastel-pink, but thinking that she’s like that all the fucking time is at least foolness.

She is the goddess of love, beauty and sex, but also of war, death, laughter, victory and so much more. She’s a frigging goddess y'all, not a trendy youtuber.

Don’t forget it.

10 - Offerings, historical and UPG

Chocolate; Yogurt; Strawberry dairy drink; Wine, especially the smooth variety; Lettuce (because of Adonis); Apple; Red fruits and berries; Red and pink flowers; Any artistic thing that you make for her; Make-up; Jewelry; Perfumes; Honey; Milk

11 - Festivals, days and times sacred to her

Every fouth day of each month

Every full Moon day

Every Friday

February 6th, honors to Aphrodite

12 - Places associated with her

Chypre (lol that’s the only place I can think)

13 - What modern cultural issues are closest to this deity’s heart?

I think self-esteem is the most well known issue she helps coming around atm

14 - Has worship of this deity changed in modern times?

I am very sure of it. We have trouble enough to find basic info about our deities, imagine a whole how-to-worship guide!

15 - Any mundane practices associated with this deity?

Having sex is the most obvious of them all, but there are far more pleasures in life than just sex.

Eating some food you really enjoy, for example.

Or putting some makeup on.

Expressing the beauty with arts, I guess.

16 - How do you think this deity represents the values of their pantheon and cultural origins?

That’s way more complex than what I can answer without having to stress too much about it

Sorry

17 - How does this deity relates to other gods and other pantheons?

Historically, she relates to Venus and Hator. They were the closest. But in my opinion she’s linked to every single love deity, especially female ones.

I found her and Freya very similar, mostly because of the warrior aspect of Freya, very similar to Aphrodite Areia.

18 - This deity’s gender and sexuality (historical and UPG)

Historically she looks pretty cishet female, but in my opinion every god is kinda pansexual I guess.

They don’t need labels as we do.

Also she’s clearly a woman for me.

19 - What quality or qualities of this goddess do you most admire? What qualities of them do you find the most troubling?

I can’t talk about her qualities without saying that I think she’s perfect, sorry.

SHE’S PERFECT!!

Ok, now to the qualities.

In my personal experience with her she’s like those kind of crazy mom’s that are all like “ya wanna? Ya do!” but also very sweet (soft maybe? Idk).

She’s very comforting and thinking about my practice I think she wants me to try not to be so dependable to pendulums.

And she got these vibes kinda like Mean Girls but a nice one

I don’t think there’s anything that I dislike about her really.

20 - Art that reminds you of this deity

Mostly break-the-rules love, or idk how to describe, maybe overcome relationships I guess

But if ya break some rules to kiss some mouths babe ya goin the right direction

Also I don’t really see her in paintings. They’re mostly blonde, and as far as I can “see” she’ve got wavy-curly dark brown hair and pretty yellowish-green eyes.

21 - Music that makes you think of that deity

Side to side, Gloriosa, New Rules, Toxic, TiK ToK, God is a Woman(yep, that predictable), Dangerous Woman, Thank U next, Strawberries & Cigarettes, Scars to Your Beautiful, Savages - Kerli

22 - A quote, poem, etc, that you think this deity ressonates strongly with

I have none, sorry

23 - your own composition — a piece of writing about this deity

I’ve tried doing it before. Like, actual writing for her, but I couldn’t.

So I guess I’ll stick to the motivational Tumblr posts I do about her :)

24 - A time when this deity helped you

I don’t think that she’s actively helping me with anything specific, since I never ask much.

Once I asked to meet a nice boy that I’d kiss.

Welp in my new school I’ve got quite a lot, so cheers 🥂

25 - A time when she refused to help

Can’t remember any moment like this now.

She did punish me once tho 😂 it was actually funny and @thepastelpriestess witnessed everything from her very own screen

26 - How has your relationship with her changed over time?

It went to “I know you exist” to “I’d seek your help anytime soon” to “holy smokes you my mamma” to “hi guuurl ya doing great? Les hav sum tea n chat n laugh at nothing all night”

27 - Worst misconception that about her that you have encountered

That she’s selfish

Like, she sure is in the myths and yadda yadda but Myths Aphrodite and Real Aphrodite are very different, actually (look Jessie I’ve learnt 😂)

28 - Something you wish you knew about his deity but you currently don’t

I’m not really sure, actually…

I guess I’d like to hang out like face to face, have a talk-hear-hear-talk kinda conversation

Dunno

I guess then I’d know what I’d like to know that I don’t yet.

29 - Any unusual or interesting UPGs to share?

She’s the goddess of joy :)

30 - Any suggestions to others just starting to learn abou her?

Chase all her info in Tumblr like a crazy old lady going after her twelve cats through the streets of her neighborhood.

Basically, search a ton

Home protection spell jar

For a calm, safe, protected and loving home.

Layers from top to bottom:

🌕 Chamomile for calmness and peace

🌕 Rosemary for protection and healing

🌕 White rice for abundance

🌕 Lavender for peace

🌕 Pink hamalayan salt for absorbing negativity &love

🌕 Black salt for protection

The chamomile and rosemary layers aren't so clear because I used chamomile from a tea bag.

Which might be a tip for closet witches, buy herb teabags and you can put them (if needed unopened) together in a jar for a spell jar that seems like a tea collection. Or pour together for innocent looking tea blend. Or something similar idk.

Beauty Sleep Sachet Glamour Spell

This is an easy sachet glamour spell I use. It allows oneself to see their own beauty and see past their flaws. It is excellent for confidence boosting as well as self-love purposes.

You will need:

  • A sachet or some clothe to make a pouch or bag of some sort
  • Dried Rose Petals or any other dried flower petals you associate with beauty
  • A small piece of rose quartz
  • (optional) your favorite perfume

1. First make or get your bag or sachet ready. Place your rose or flower petals inside.

2. Take your rose quartz in hand and cup your hands around it and whisper to it your wishes, in this case how you wish to see your true beauty. I usually seal in these wishes with a gentle kiss to the stone before placing it into the bag as well. Close it.

3. Optional: Take your favorite perfume and spritz the bag once.

4. Once all this is done take the bag in your hands and do a little chant of your choosing stating your wishes. An example would be: “By mornings light, I wish to see my true beauty shine bright.” But you may do whatever you feel is fitting.

5. Finally place it underneath your pillow or near your bed so that every time you sleep it can do its magic.

Aftercare Suggestions: I suggest you change its flower petals monthly and recharge the rose quartz inside it every two weeks to keep the spell potent.

✨Friendship Spell Jar✨

What you will need:

  • 🏔Himalayan Salt
  • 🍯Honey
  • 🍊Orange Peel (fresh recommended, but mine are dried)
  • 📝Written Spell or Sigil
  • 🌿🍑Representatives of you (I chose my favorit herb: rosemary, and my favorite tea: peac)
  • 🕯Yellow Candle

Select a small container or jar, start with your pink salt for the base of the spell. Salt is good for protection during spells, but in this case is especially useful for protecting you from bad people and toxic relationships down the road. Pink specifically corresponds to friendship and relationships, but white salt can be subsituted!

Next coat your salt in honey to attract a well caring person to your life.

Roll up your written spell or sigil (this can be anything from a small poem to a list of what youre longing for) and dip it into the honey. I also recommend writting your spell in yellow or pink.

Add orange peels to symbolize change im relationships and finish the contents with things you correspond with. This may be things such as your favorite herbs, tea, crystals, flowers, dried fruit… something that another person can be attracted to you specifically by.

Lastly seal your jar with a yellow candle. Yellow is a very strong correspondent with friendship, but pink will work aswell, or all purpose white! If you can’t burn candles tie a ribbon around your jar.

Let the jar charge.

Hide the jar somewhere special to you: in your locker, dresser, make up drawer, behind your favorite books on your book case, in the soil of your favorite plant… etc.

Witchcraft for the Chronically Fatigued

Fatigue looks at things such as tiredness, drowsiness, exhaustion, weakness, lethargy and memory issues and says “I can do all that and more!”. It leaves you feeling utterly trapped in your own body; unable to move, or even think at times. It fluctuates, but is always looming.

While this post is open for all, it is written for those who truly relate to this all-consuming feeling (due to ME/CFS, other chronic illnesses, mental illness, or undiagnosed causes). Not all of these may work for you, but hopefully they inspire something that will. For general low energy witchcraft, check out my Bedridden Witch Series!

As always: witchcraft is to be used in addition to proper medical care, treatment and medication; not as a sole alternative.

To draw energy:

If you cannot produce your own, magically created will be just fine!

Crystals.

  • I tend to use clear quartz for an energy boost, but trust your intuition; if something calls to you, it’s for a reason.
  • Keep it near your bedside table, under your pillow, hold it in your hand or place it on your body where you feel the fatigue most strongly centered.
  • When on the go, carry it in your pocket or wear as jewelry. If it is larger, carry in a bag and hold it when you need it.
  • Charge using a charging board or the elements.
  • Crystals for fatigue

Waters.

  • Physically touching water brings me energy. I keep jars of snow, rain, storm, river, stream (etc, etc.) water and will dip my fingers in it and mark that parts of my body where the fatigue feels strongest. Be aware of pollutants and do not ingest!
  • The same method can be done with tap water (or water charged under the sun or moon)
  • Drink sun water or sun tea (start with drinking safe water and let it absorb the energies of the sun).
  • Some people find moon water to be energizing (same process as above, just with the moon).
  • See also: Bedridden witch: Bath edition.

Other elements.

  • Note what is energizing to you and what is draining to you. Consider: the sun, moon (and it’s phases), weather (rain, overcast, snow, storm, wind), cold vs. hot, the earth, fire, air, etc.
  • Once you find which elements are energizing to you, find ways to incorporate them into your life. Examples: jars of different waters or soils, rocks collected from places, candles, and more.
  • I usually draw energy up from the earth by placing my palms flat towards the earth by the sides of my body. So if I was lying down, my arms would be at my sides with my palms facing down.
  • Expose yourself or protect yourself. I’ll use my personal experiences as an example here… Rain often energizes me. When it rains, I’ll open my windows, and if I’m able I’ll step outside or collect some water. On the flipside, full moons often drain me. I’ll close my windows and curtains, hang an extra blanket over my bedroom window, use water to paint protective sigils on the window and increase my wards.

Practicing the craft with energy limitations:

Tips and tricks:

  • I highly recommend preparing things when your energy allows, so it’s always ready to go when you need it (and isn’t dependent on current energy levels).
  • Cleansing: Let other things do your work for you. Open your windows/get fresh air, steam or smoke, sound, etc. Bedridden energy cleansing.
  • Divination: Use apps when physical movement is hard. One card spreads, shorten your pendulum so you don’t need to lift your arm, divine using the elements, etc. Bedridden divination.
  • Spells: Make your own spell kits. Spell jars and sachets are also an excellent way to already have the spell prepared, set it up so you can simply shake it to re/activate the spell.
  • Warding: Create physical ties for your wards that aren’t reliant on consistent upkeep (as a failsafe), and reinforce your other ward layers when you have the energy. I create far more layers than I need so when I am unable to reinforce them, they still protect me.
  • Worship: Compile prayers and devotions somewhere you can easily find and read them, have a wall altar for easy maintenance, keep offerings simple (a glass of water, for example). Bedridden worship.

Some basic things to understand about Witchcraft

I’ve started this blog to talk about - what else - witchcraft. I’ve been practicing for four years now, and have since been learning and navigating my craft. I wouldn’t say I’m a baby witch, but I am certainly less experienced when in comparison to other witches who’ve been practicing much longer than I have.

Part of the reason I started this blog is because I wanted to educate others whilst also educating myself. I like to learn through conversation and putting ideas and thoughts out there. In this post I’m going to be talking about just a few basics of witchcraft, and what I feel is important to know if you are just getting started and still figuring your craft out.

And just know that these are simply just my thoughts and opinions, and that I will not be claiming anything here to be fact. Without further ado, here I go.

1. No two witches are exactly alike

Every witch is different. While you may find some witches who are very similar in their practices and/or beliefs, you need to understand that every witch is unique. There are many, many different ways to practice the craft, and people from all walks of life and religions are witches. It’s important to remember that everyone’s journey through the craft is different, and that you should never criticize another witch for their beliefs or the way they practice their craft. (I will probably go over the different kinds of witches in another post).

2. There is no ‘right’ way into becoming a witch

This sort of ties into the my first point on this list. Like I said, every witch is different, meaning that they all have different ways they have navigated their witchcraft path, and how they became witches all vary. This is something I have seen a lot of debate on. I’ve seen multiple people trying to say that you have to follow a specific series of steps in order to be recognized as a witch. This is something I honestly had a really hard time with when I first got started back when I was sixteen. We need to let people understand that there is no one single way someone can become a witch. Speaking of which…

3. Anybody can be a witch

Alright, this is something that I really think needs to be said. Something I’ve seen fairly often in the witchcraft community is gatekeeping. ‘Gatekeeping’, as it is used today online, is when you have either one person or a group of people taking it upon themselves to decide who or who doesn’t deserve to be a part of a community. This is something I have unfortunately seen happening among some parts of the witchcraft community, whether it be on tumblr, Facebook, YouTube, etc.

These are the people who seem to believe that you need to have a specific set of traits or interests in order to be a witch. Such things include; a deep interest in the moon and stars, being very emotional, loving nature, being into astrology, having an affinity for crystals, etc. You want to know what makes you a witch? Practicing witchcraft. That’s it. That’s all you have to do to be a witch. Given this, literally anybody can be a witch.

4. Study hard and be patient

I cannot stress this enough! In order to understand anything, you need to study up on it. And with witchcraft, there is a LOT to study about. There are different kinds of witches, magickal practices, pantheons, beliefs, herbs and crystals you can use, spells, and so, so much more. And remember to take your time with studying. There is no rush, and you can’t expect to learn everything there is to know overnight. I’ve been practicing for four years, and I’m still learning more about the craft. There are witches out there who have been practicing for decades, and even they are still learning new things.

Learning the craft takes a lot of time and patience, so don’t get frustrated when you aren’t picking up on things right away.

5. Be careful!

This is another thing I cannot stress enough. It can be really exciting when you first get stared on your path, but it’s important to approach with a sense of caution. Don’t just run into things. Especially if you are working with ghosts, spirits, deities, or hexes. There are so many things that can go wrong. Which is why I wouldn’t go trying to work with those particular practices until I’ve done plenty of studying and reading so that I know I’m doing things right. I feel like almost every negative story I’ve heard or seen in the media connected to witchcraft is more often than not the result of someone running head first into something they didn’t quite yet understand. Please, please, PLEASE be careful!

6. Have an altar (or a designated space to practice)

Okay, this is probably more of a personal idea here, but I still think it’s pretty important. A witches altar is where they do most of their spellwork and often keep their tools. And for religious/pagan witches, it’s where they worship their respective deities. Overall it is a space for you to practice your craft, hone your skills, and meditate. I think it’s important that every witch has an altar, a space for them to meditate and practice their craft. And your altar doesn’t have to be in one stationary place. Some witches have small, portable altars. And other’s who have their own altars at home have different ways to set theirs up. I personally don’t think there is any one right way to set up an altar. (And I may very well find myself making a post on altars in the future).

And there you have it. The basic things that every baby witch should know before starting witchcraft, or when they are just barely figuring out their path. If anyone else has any other ideas, please feel free to reblog and add on.

Prayers to Venus:

I work at the Getty Villa, and as part of our summer Roman Holidays event, we have an altar to Venus set up, with blank tags so that people can leave prayers to her. I’m not sure if the museum expected the response we’ve gotten, but it’s been really lovely and touching to read all the prayers.
