Curious about the iPhone 8? Here's what's coming, courtesy of Apple's introduction of its new operating system.

Apple kept news of a tenth anniversary iPhone under wraps on day one of its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif.

But Tim Cook & Co. revealed plenty about the software that will be at the new iPhone’s core when it arrives, likely in the fall. As with prior iterations of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 11 also promises new features for current iPhone models. And Apple also reserved special love for iPads that the company can only hope helps revive a sagging brand.

OK Google. Listen up, Alexa. Siri may soon have a say in the future of smart speakers.

Amazon's sleeper hit Echo and its challenger Google Home have claimed spots on countertops and nightstands across America. More and more people can't stop talking to these voice-activated, artificially intelligent devices. And that poses a competitive threat to Apple. Without a speaker device of its own, the iPhone maker could see its relationship with loyal users begin to fray.

Apple is expected to unveil a Siri-controlled speaker, and it could take the wraps off as soon as Monday when the company kicks off its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose. Even though it's late to the smart-speaker craze, Apple's beloved brand and fan base could help it grab a sizable chunk of the growing market, analysts say.

Just ask consumers like Mike Julianelle, who's already ready to trade in his Amazon Echo for one.

We know his story very well: he founded tech company Apple with Steve Wozniak in 1976, gave birth to the Mac, left Apple nearly 9 years later, then returned and transformed them into a giant with the launch of the iPhone. On Friday, Apple CEO Tim Cook took a moment to celebrate the legacy of Jobs, who died in 2011 following a long battle with cancer. "Remembering Steve, whose words and ideals will always inspire us. 'There is no reason not to follow your heart,'" wrote Cook on Twitter. (Photo: Getty)

This new bug could mess up your iPhone big-time

iPhone users be careful opening unknown videos.

A five-second video is making its way around the internet, and when opened on iPhones causes the phone to lock up and reset.

At first, everything seems fine, and when you start playing the video on an iPhone it appears to run normally. You can even exit the video and open other apps once it's finished.

In the background, however, the video seems to start a loop, and within a minute of completion, you'll start to notice the iPhone slow down considerably before ultimately freezing, requiring a reset of the phone.

While we won't link to the video here, USA TODAY was able to confirm that the bug is real, having tested it on an iPhone 6S Plus running a beta version of iOS 10.2 as well as an iPhone 7 Plus running iOS 10.1.

We did not encounter any issues when playing the clip on a Samsung Galaxy S7running Android 6.0.1.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The video started gaining traction Reddit yesterday, and has since gone viral with a YouTube video showing off the glitch racking up nearly 375,000 views over the last day. The bug is similar to a text message hack that went viral last year, where sending a particular message would automatically cause the recipient's iPhone to restart.

No data appeared to be lost as a result of the bug, with the only result being the inconvenience of having to reset your phone. Once reset both of the iPhones we tested again functioned normally.

If you have an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus you can reset your iPhone by holding down the power and volume down buttons. Those with an iPhone 6S, SE or earlier can reset their devices by holding down the power and home buttons.

As always this holiday season, be careful with what you open.

Apps that can help you get home safely

Have you ever had the feeling that someone was following you? Or maybe you were out with a group and suddenly find yourself surrounded by strangers. It’s not safe to go for a walk, shop, exercise, or drive alone anymore.

You have one gadget that can let others watch over you and in the event of an emergency, summon help. But your phone must have the tools before you need them.

After you read about the tools, take the next step and put them on your phone. It may save your life someday. Be sure to share this article with family and friends, especially anyone living alone and college students. Just remember, nothing is a substitute for common sense and good planning.
