weirdest most ahistorical "take" on Tumblr is the posts that are like New users: NEVER LIKE POSTS. LIKES DO NOTHING
like idk maybe I've just been in more chill circles but I've been here since ~2012 and everyone has always been hitting "like" on posts. You hit "like" on a post because.... you like it? It doesn't "do nothing", it does what it's supposed to. Do reblogs "do something" substantial in the scheme of things?? We're all just posting
"I see you scrolling past without reblogging" did used to show up circa 2014, but like, A. That was specifically for posts about social justice issues, not random artwork or jokes B. Everyone realized eventually that it just annoyed people and wasn't effective activism and stopped doing it

From like, 2008 to 2015, every single social media had a “like” button that did exactly what Tumblr’s like button does-- send OP a notification that says somebody liked their post. That’s what a like button is!
Since then, social media sites have started making likes “do something” by using them as a metric for algorithmically sorting and pushing content... and we all hate it! At least, I thought we did!
