This 'Wonder Woman' review is a sexist nightmare

Here’s a tip for male film critics: When reviewing a film with a female protagonist, don’t focus on the hotness of the actress.

David Edelstein is a respected critic at Vulture, but his response to Wonder Woman is embarrassingly sexist. His review is peppered with comments about Gal Gadot’s attractiveness, describing her as a “superbabe” in the first paragraph, and noting this impact of hiring a female director:

“With a female director, Patty Jenkins, at the helm, Diana isn’t even photographed to elicit slobbers. Slobbering, S&M-oriented American patriots will be even more put out, given that WW is no longer dressed in red, white, and blue. I didn’t miss Lynda Carter’s buxom, apple-cheeked pinup, though.”

He can’t stop commenting on Gal Gadot’s appearance, remarking that “Israeli women are a breed unto themselves.” It’s a textbook example of what not to do when reviewing a female-led movie.

You read that right. If we hit $500K, Neil has kindly agreed to do a live reading of the greatest restaurant menu of all time. It's about 8000 pages, last time I checked. Have you heard Neil's voice? Mellifluous, I tell you. There's a reason he won an award for audiobooks along with all the 18,000 other things he's won as an author/screenwriter/producer/raconteur/hero. FYI, the hashtag for this silliness is #neilcake. Why? Because it is silly and good. I'll arrange with Neil at his convenience to do the reading within the next year in a public setting, whether onstage or online. If it's onstage, I'll sell tickets and donate profits after costs to UNHCR. Be careful — hackers are hiding viruses in online movie subtitles

  • Security research firm Check Point revealed a new exploit on Tuesday that affects several media players.
  • The vulnerability allows a hacker to infect your device and gain full control through through subtitles.
  • The exploit, which puts 200 million users at risk, impacts video players and streamers like Popcorn Time, Kodi, Stremio and VLC.
  • Here’s how it works: malformed subtitle files allow hackers to embed code into the subtitle files in popular pirated movies and TV shows.
  • Subtitles are a non-suspecting source for hacks. When a user utilizes them, the malware is dumped on their desktop and the attacker is notified.
  • Once they have control over a device — PC, smart TV or smartphone — the hacker can do whatever they want, from stealing information to installing ransomware. Read more (5/25/17)
