I didn’t add a visual of Jon because he’s always up for interpretation but yeah, you still get it

the blocking in this deleted scene of re-animator is brilliant because it's the actors and director (stuart gordon) completely fucking around with the rule of thirds.

herbert keeps trying to get in between dan and meg (even though meg just agreed to marry dan and he overheard the whole conversation)

he gets dan to himself and the camera pans to just the two of them as they have a little talk, ignoring meg. two shot time.

[left photo] so meg fights back by trying to take herbert's place, but herbert stands still.

[right photo] so the other two naturally make space for him, driving them apart. herbert knows that if he keeps dan by his side (any side), he will survive.

[left] dan moves, casting meg aside, so dan and herbert enter their little world together once more.

[right] then meg retaliates by trying to take herbert's spot again. her method is constantly moving to strike, which is the complete opposite of herbert's (standing still and following dan when he wants him to)

next, herbert imitates BOTH of them— first, mimicking meg's speech pattern and cadence, "it's the only way, danny," and moving like her. then, mimicking dan, angling himself to face meg, which makes them appear as a united front. their own side.

once meg finally resorts to desperation and calling herbert a maniac (but dan defends him), herbert knows he's won.

he smiles and faces toward both— as if he were watching dan and meg like an audience member. he remains comfortable in the middle because he knows dan will join his side regardless.

meg storms out of the shot, leaving the camera to close in on dan and herbert's little world again in a lovely two-shot. herbert reaches out and touches dan, something he had just seen meg do to get him to listen.

space one is dan, space two is empty between them, space three is herbert! he won! I'm sorry, meg!

I saw a headcanon somewhere about how Jon is always staring right into the camera when someone takes a photo that he happens to be in and it's all I've been thinking about. Picture this, a group of friends take a photo together that Jon is in the background of and when they look at the photo they notice him just watching. They turn around and notice that he's clearly in the middle of talking with someone and doesn't even notice them. Now THAT is my shit! We need more spooky photos of Jon!
