A Quiet Creature

Please, more your thoughts on arwen ☺ I feel like it's a taboo, but I don't know why.

It does feel taboo! But it shouldn’t be, because that’s not what fandom is meant to be about.

Now. I am going to try to be succinct, but I have strong doubts about how successful I’m going to be, lmfao. I have Many Thoughts™️, head is extremely full. In fact it’s taken me several sessions of coming back to this ask and adding more to my draft post to capture everything, so. 🤷🏻‍♀️ We can safely throw succinct out the window.

I want to start out by saying that I love both Gwen and Arthur as characters; just adding that as there seems to be this odd idea in fandom sometimes that if I don’t ship them together, it’s because I hate one of them. I also am going to preface this miniature novel (lol) by specifying that the characterisations I love are based on those in season 1 of Merlin — that’s what I see as their canon characterisations.

Okay, so in no particular order, here are my thoughts on Arwen and why it just doesn’t do it for me.

☝️ THIS

(although I DO like fantasizing about mergwethur 😁)

💥What is one canon thing that you wish you could change?

Well, if it just one thing...

I think Merlin and Morgana should have had a proper showdown. Because after Morgana discovers Merlin is Emrys, she takes away his magic and... laughs in his face a little before trapping him in a cave? That wasn't very satisfying, in my opinion (yes, I get that Merlin getting sealed in a cave is a reference to Arthurian legend).

I just wish they had written a more extended scene for their final confrontation. We deserved it after all that build-up. Like, it's basic rules of storytelling.

Merlin had a better showdown with Nimueh than any Morgana confrontation They were all disappointing damp squibs and considering their history together they should have carried much more emotional power than they did - especially the final climatic one, it was so rushed and both actors (but especially Katie) deserved more time.

Morgana should have suspected something was up back in the first few seasons about Merlin and his magic, the fact she never realised seems more plot led than character led. She wasn’t stupid and Merlin at times was hardly subtle with some of the things he said when she questioned him about her magic, yet she needs Mordred to drop the bombshell right at the end? Made no sense.

If there was one thing I wish I could explain to younger people I meet, it's this:

What we commonly perceive as getting older, is actually about getting smaller, about our world shrinking, opportunities diminishing, our interests narrowing, our energy dwindling.

I'm here to tell you that this is bullshit.

Choose to be bigger.

As you get older, this world wants to make you smaller and smaller and smaller but you can refuse, you can embrace the ambiguity and uncertainty, you can choose to embrace bigger heart and a bigger world.

Everyone wants you smaller, meeker, easier to manage. But you don't have to go along with that bullshit.

Try the new thing, eat the strange food, wear the beautiful clothes, visit a new place and make the new friend who doesn't look like you, take a chance and view the world through a new point of view you hadn't considered before.

Keep your heart big, keep it open, remember that your capacity to love is infinite. accept the cost of inevitable pain and loss and do it anyway because a small, closed heart is a far greater tragedy in the end.

Your life is yours. Make it as big and complicated and beautiful as you deserve. Don't pare any single part of it down to fit into a smaller, more appropriate sized box, not for anyone, not ever.

Remember that the universe is large enough to encompass all of you, the universe is so much bigger than you will ever understand. Always strive to make the space inside you to take it all in, to make your heart and brain and soul big enough to try and understand the sublime beauty of it all.

It's a harder path than being small, being diminished, being manageable. But I promise you, I absolutely promise you, it's so worth it.

Get Bigger.

Reasons to read Warlock Holmes by GS Denning:

It's a Sherlock Holmes adaptation that makes fun of the confusing parts of the original stories such as continuity errors and perspective shifts

Demons!

Nihilistic vampires!

Prophetic but spiteful Oracles who's sole purpose in existence is now to harass a dead wizard

2 instances of what I will call a Mummy coma

2 instances of horse murder but not in the way you would think

A canonical Johnlock kiss

Magic users galore

A surprisingly prevalent queer allegory

A complexly evolving villain who ranges from inconvenient occasional possessor to murderous magic mafia crime lord

Plot relevant paper boat hat

Plot relevant gambling problems

Extremely competent Watson, character flaw: English

Extremely powerful magic user Warlock Holmes, character flaw: Mental Illness

Other reasons not involving the text: I really need to be able to talk to folks about these books,I am deeply unwell about them

I love these books!

(Although I would change Warlock's charater flaw to sweet but stupid)

"Fight the power!"

Honey, the only thing I'm fighting right now is my body's need for sleep, so. We'll see what happens, eh?
