TOP TEN DOCTOR WHO EPISODES AS VOTED BY OUR FOLLOWERS #3 → HEAVEN SENT (67 votes)

As you come into this world, something else is also born. You begin your life, and it begins a journey towards you. It moves slowly, but it never stops. Wherever you go, whatever path you take, it will follow - never faster, never slower, always coming. You will run; it will walk. You will rest; it will not. One day, you will linger in the same place too long; you will sit too still or sleep too deep. And when, too late, you rise to go, you will notice a second shadow next to yours. Your life will then be over. (insp)

Clara and Twelve are just like: Why are you like this (derogatory)? Why are you like this (affectionate)? I’m going to murder you. I would kill in your name. We are two unsocialized, feral cats hissing at each other. We are tethered, every version of me in every lifetime has found you and died for you. I can’t stand you. I’d go to hell if you asked. Shut up! I’d rather die than forget our conversations. You’re a needy, game-playing, egomaniac control freak. My love for you is so powerful, it lives on as a melody in the back of your mind. You’re the worst of me. You’re the best of me. We can’t see eye to eye. I would unravel time and burn the universe for you. You’re annoying. I would die every day for 4.5 billion years just for a chance to see you again.

These two make me feral 🫠

I’ve noticed this revisionist Greek myth is common wherein Persephone loves Hades and eats the pomegranate seeds in order to evade her overbearing mother, and that’s all well and good. You know, sometimes I’m in the mood for it and sometimes I’m not. But hear this: as long as we’re doing this, why is no one wondering whether Aphrodite might really love Hephaestus?

Think about it. All the gods in their immortal splendor are lining up to marry her, doing everything in their power to impress her, the goddess of love and beauty, and she choses…that guy. A god in technical terms only, a social reject who’s ugly and malformed and um, no fun. Always slaving away in his workshop when everyone else is quaffing nectar and having their eternal beach party up on Mount Olympus. They can’t believe she’d give up all of them for that.

So, because the gods do not take rejection well (looking at you Apollo), eventually they start to say to each other, well, we all know Zeus made her do it anyway. He’s gotta feel guilty for throwing Hephaestus off Mount Olympus that one time. And it quickly becomes that poor girl, stuck in that workshop full of sweat and dirt and cyclopses when she could have had one of us. Because of course they’ve got love all figured out; it’s entirely technical and dependent on who’s the most charming and good-looking and not at all variable and strange and notoriously unpredictable, right?

Meanwhile Ares, only the most arrogant and brainless of the crew, can’t take a hint and is still showing up wherever Aphrodite goes trying to hit on her, so eventually she and Hephaestus decide to rig up an elaborate mechanical trap for him, using her as bait. When all the gods have laughed at him for getting caught he huffily attempts to regain his dignity by telling them, whatever, guys, you want to know the truth, I was meeting her for an assignation. And they all kind of know he’s full of it but they just accept it as the unvarnished truth from thereon in, because they’d love to believe she’d cheat on Hephaestus with Ares. They’d love it. Come on, Aphrodite, get off your high horse and admit you’re just as shallow as the rest of us.

So they talk, but Aphrodite doesn’t really care about their collective jealousy because she dotes on her misshapen genius of a husband with his sooty hands and his sweaty brow who always takes her seriously and is always so hard at work inventing astonishing new things to make her happy, and she loves the volcano they live in with its internal pressures so conducive to the formation of precious stones and its passages lit with glowing lava that so gorgeously offsets her cheekbones, and all the cyclopses worship her because even with one eye apiece they’ve still got more depth perception than most men do where she’s concerned. True it is that as a couple the two develop a reputation for not getting out much, because all those Olympian parties bore them to death and they’d rather spend time with each other (poor Aphrodite, she’s such a vivacious young thing and her husband is so grasping and insecure that he won’t let her go out and have fun), but they do all right.

The hottest of takes.

Something I think about quite often is "what if they'd plotted Clara’s Impossible-Girl storyline sooner and had her echoes dotted around more throughout eleven's era?"

What if one of her echoes had been Idris in 'The Doctors Wife'? That would've been a fantastic tie-in in my opinion-- granted it would twist the timeline more, and the Doctor would recognise Victorian Clara as the woman that had hosted the TARDIS, but again I feel that would've added even more to the mystery!

After a long Doctor Who hiatus I finally watch season eight and nine. I just finished Hell Bent and everything you’ve ever said about it was so true. It was so beautiful and so tragic it’s hard to put it into words. Doctor Who has been my favorite show for years now and I’m really at a point where I just don’t want to continue, I’m happy where it ended, it just feels right to stop here. I’m an emotional wreck rn oh my God

Anyway, thank you for being the only blog on Tumblr who matters. You are a true inspiration for me and I hope you’re doing well!

Right?! It's a rebirth but it's such an ending. In amidst all the tragedy there's an uplift and an eternal, ever-burning hope, yet there's a kind of finality to that moment. Infinite possibility spreads out before the characters, but this window, our window, into their story has closed.

Thank you so much! 💕😊

The Doctor met Clara and she almost instantly brought him out of his depression and hiding from the world, from people, from feeling.

They spent like 30 minutes together and he was already giving her a key to the TARDIS. Just look at his face. She started to cry & didn't know why. If that is not the meeting of Twin Flames, two parts of one soul recognizing each other, then I don't know what is.

30 mins & he was already trying to fight the universe for her life...

VASTRA: Are you making a bargain with the universe? You'll save the world to let her live?

DOCTOR: Yes. And don't you think, after all this time and everything I've ever done, that I am owed this one?

Coming full circle, to the end of their story, he would repeat those words when trying to outmaneuver the universe to save her once again:

OHILA: You have gone too far. You have broken every code you ever lived by.

DOCTOR: After all this time, after everything I've done, don't you think the universe owes me this?

So, while he may have given parts of his hearts away before, no one will ever convince me that Clara Oswald was anything less than the Doctor's true soulmate and he knew it in an instant.

There's something else I didn't pay any mind to the first time I watched 'The Snowmen' that got me right in the feels now:

THIS ISN’T A GHOST STORY

1) The Rings of Akhaten, 2) Heaven Sent, 3) Heaven Sent, 4) Hell Bent, 5) The Rings of Akhaten, 6) Hell Bent, 7) Mummy on the Orient Express, 8) Into The Dalek
Extract from Faces in the Crowd, Valeria Luiselli, (trans. Christina MacSweeney)

i’m sure someone else must have made a more coherent post on this but… sometimes i think of:

donna’s  “Don’t make me go back. Doctor, please, please don’t make me go back.” but 10 wiping her mind and sending her back to the existence that she hated

vs

clara’s “These have been the best years of my life, and they are mine. Tomorrow is promised to no one, Doctor, but I insist upon my past. I am entitled to that. It’s mine.” and the doctor realizing that what he was going to do is wrong, and then clara going free while the doctor forgets her

both donna and clara are people who don’t back down easily and they don’t hesitate to call the doctor out on things when they think he’s wrong. i think  donna and clara are the only two new who companions who the doctor looks straight in the eye and treats as an equal. and both end up in a situation where the doctor decides that wiping their minds is the only way to save them. but in the end the outcomes are so wildly different, like clara’s ending is a response to donna’s one. idk i think it’s nice.

I don't sugar coat things, I'm not Willy Wonka

How can I, with brevity, sum up my feelings about when people ask me how I can possibly think the Doctor's true love is Clara and not his 'wife' River?

Clara: I'm going to die and I accept it. Please don't do anything stupid because you're hurting.
Doctor: I'm going to torture & kill myself again & again over the course of 4.5 billion years, go against everything I've ever stood for, my own people/planet & will destroy the universe itself if it means there's even a small chance to get you back.
River: I'm going to die and I don't want to. You can go fix it so that I don't.
Doctor: Yeah... no. It is what it is. Sorry, but you gots to go.

The End

Whouffaldi cramps again

It's 2023 and I'm still not over them IT'S THE WAY he stops talking as soon as he sees her smile after 4,5 BILLION YEARS because he's freaking MESMORISED BY HER and missed her SO MUCH that it seems like for a second he even forgets how to BREATHE AND BLINK AND AAAAHH DON'T TALK TO ME-

AND THEN HE TAKES A BREATH IN LIKE HIS HEART SKIPPED A BEAT AND COMPLETELY FORGETS WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT MAN IS IN LOVE HE CAN'T HIDE IT

being a doctor who fan and seeing netflix cancelling most of their shows after three seasons, like.... i sit upon an ancient throne. my kin have ruled these lands for centuries untold, watching empires rise and crumble to dust. none can challenge us

Sometimes I think about how doctor who went on “hiatus” (got very very cancelled) in the 80’s and 90’s, and how the fans kept it alive. How writers wrote almost 300 novels in that time (I’ve tried to count, I’ve failed). How the actors created audio dramas, how there were comics, and talks of Hollywood, and silly off brand adventures.

How the 8th Doctor exists only in the margins and footnotes, and yet exists so vividly.

How there is no one writer, there is no one doctor. We all have the potential.

I think about the constellation that NASA named “The TARDIS”.

I think of those who said it should be over and how with desperate furiousity the fans said, “no. This story can not end. Fuck you. We will write it in the stars.”
