I just had a discussion with my friend about fanfiction and how we tend to assume that women are the writers without any actual proof. Then I said, hey, I know fanfiction written by gay and trans dudes. But then I remembered, wait, I think I know one writer who just must be cis het based on his work. Beyond the numbers here, I read a study on gender and fandom, and what ressorted from the study was that men were more into descriptive work around fanfiction, such as fandom wikis, for example. And women are indeed more into fanfiction, and creative work. This is due to the fact that men are generally satisfied with the original work, often written for their demographic. On the contrary women are often frustrated with lack of women, the fact they are badly written, and the fact that the story is generally not writen for them. That push them to create alternate stories who are more suited to their taste.

I'm not home, but if someone want, I can try to find back the reference of the study.
