The thirteenth squad captain had just finished filling out paperwork when he realized he had not checked up with the tenth squad in a while. Ukitake had a slight preference to the squad’s captain because like himself, Hitsugaya taicho shared a head of white hair. Since he was visiting his…
Rangiku was lounging about in the office she shared with her captain. Luckily she wasn’t being constantly reminded of paperwork since Toshiro had stepped out of the office for the moment. He didn’t say where he was going; only that he would be back soon. As soon as he had left, she had taken her sake and magazines out. She wasn’t expecting anyone to stop by the division anytime soon, so she was surprised when someone did enter the office.
She was happy to see that it was Captain Ukitake. He must’ve been looking for Toshiro. She giggled when she noticed all the candy he was carrying. It was definitely for Toshiro, she had seen him come back with candy a few times. “Ukitake-taicho!” she said with a smile as she stood up. “I’ve been doing good, a little bored, but great.” She answered. “How are you doing?” she asked pouring him a small glass of sake. “Here, I insist.” She said with a big smile as she handed him the glass. “You must’ve been looking for Hitsugaya-taicho. He stepped out for the moment.” She said having a seat. “He’ll be back soon, so have a seat.” She said.
Ukitake entered the office feeling welcomed by the fukutaicho.
“I’ve been feeling quite well. It’s been nice to be out and about without worrying too much about my health,” answered Ukitake. He accepted Rangiku’s invitation to some sake. The captain set down the treats by the door and proceeded to sit down for a drink.
“Ah yes, I was looking for Hitsugaya, but it isn’t that important. I found some candy from the world of the living and thought I’d stop by. I know he has a fondness for the sweet confections,” the white haired man said as he smiled.
“I do have to say that I haven’t had some sake in a while though. The last time I drank was with Shunsui and that was some time ago. I had to take it easy because I was feeling under the weather,” Ukitake began, “but this will be nice. So how’s the tenth division been lately?” he finsished before he took his first sip of sake. “My this tastes better than I thought it would, arigato.”
Rangiku knew about the captain’s health condition. She recalled the time when he went to the beach with the Shinigami Women’s Association. “It’s good to hear you’ve been doing well.” She said with a smile as she picked up her own glass of sake and poured more into it.
“Thanks for bringing the candy, I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.” She said with a smile. She knew just how much her captain loved to eat sweet things. “He loves to eat sweets and he loves watermelon flavored things.” She said recalling the time she found out how watermelon was his favorite fruit.
Rangiku was happy that he was having sake again. “Well, I’m glad you’re feeling okay to have some now.” She said with a smile. Rangiku thought about his question on the tenth division. “Well, we’re all doing okay.” She said taking a sip. “I recently went on another sake trip with some of the guys. We had a really fun drinking competition.” She said with a smile. Of course, she always ended up winning those. “Just don’t tell Hitsugaya-taichou. He doesn’t know.” Rangiku said with a sheepish laugh. “Other than that though, everything is normal.” She said with a smile. “Sake tends to taste better than you remember if you haven’t had it in a while.” She noted. “You’re welcome, there’s more when you’re ready.” She said with a smile.
Ukitake smiled as the fukutaicho commented on his sugary snacks, “I believe Hitsugaya taicho is quite fond of them. I do enjoy them too, but I need to be careful with how many I have. Sometimes, too much sugar gives me the worst headaches.” The captian paused slightly to brush away his white hair; “I’ve been feeling very good, so I thought I would pass these on for the tenth division, I really don’t want to become ill because of these snacks.” The captain concluded and took a cautious sip, and then continued to drink his sake. “I’m glad to hear that your division is doing well!”
After a few more sips, Ukitake inquired “Oh, a sake trip? I haven’t gone to have sake in a while, I think the last time was with Shunsui,” the captain paused as he recalled the chain of following events. He chuckled slightly and continued, “We had been drinking all afternoon and by evening neither of us could remember what time we came in, but I remember on our way back, Shunsui fell into my koi pond and almost ruined his kimono.” Ukitake reflected for a moment then asked, “So how did your competition work? And don’t worry, I won’t tell Hitsugaya taicho.”
Rangiku nodded when the captain told her how he needed to be careful since too many sweets gave him bad headaches. She thought it was humorous that he liked the sweets as well. “At least you can have a little bit.” She commented with a smile. She knew how important it was for one to have something that they really liked even if it was only in small portions. She couldn’t imagine not having sake. “Well, the tenth division thanks you. Toshiro would be more than happy to take them off your hands.” She said with a giggle. Even if he did try to avoid things that would make him appear childish, it was no secret that he loved to indulge in some sweets.
Rangiku was happy when he asked about the sake tip. She liked to talk about her sake trips. “Sake trips are so much fun.” She commented with a smile. She smiled when he mentioned how the last time he went was with the eighth division captain. “Yes, Kyoraku-taicho does know how to have a good time.” She said with a smile. The last time she had sake with the eighth division captain had been a while ago. She liked how he was just as lazy as her and loved sake as much as she did. When she heard how Ukitake’s trip with Kyoraku had been, she couldn’t help but let out a little laugh. “That’s good he didn’t ruin it, he goes everywhere with that kimono.” She commented. She gave a relieved sigh when she was told he wouldn’t tell her captain. “It was wonderful! We all take shots until the last person is left. Either the guys pass out or they just can’t drink anymore.” She answered. “I usually win though; the guys never learn.” She said with a laugh as she shook her head.
Ukitake laughed as the fukutaicho told him about her trip and her drinking games. He couldn’t help but wonder how many shots of sake he would be able to handle. Not many no doubt, especially since he hadn’t drank in such a long time due to his health. He chuckled quietly to himself as he listened and pondered. “That does sound like a fun trip. Where did you go?” Ukitake asked, he was genuinely curious, because if he was feeling as well as he had been lately, he might have to go and enjoy an afternoon or evening there sometime.
“Do you have any water, I don’t want to drink too much sake yet. I’ve been doing good today so far and I don’t want to end up in my koi pond today.” The captain asked. He was feeling gradual effects of his sake after finishing his glass. He hadn’t drunk in a long time and was still being cautious. “So does the tenth squad have any missions coming up?”
