ao3 wrapped You read four billion words you should try Seeing a therapist maybe also Get laid
I might get some shit for this but one of the reasons some of you have such shit critical skills/reading comprehension is because you’re adults who exclusively consume kids’ cartoons, ya books and fanfic and staunchly refuse to engage with anything remotely challenging which is how we ended up with people thinking harry potter is the apex of world literature or that dante’s inferno is the same as fanfiction. I love easily digestible things that are simply fun to consume but I’ve heard people say “ya is a vast diverse genre” and in the same breath add “I don’t like the classics (aka books that shaped, reflected and influenced the world) because they’re all boring and one genre apparently” which is a stance that is not so much anti-elitist as it is anti-intellectual.
One of the best things about Tumblr, imo, is sometimes you can scroll through the awful content... But you don't then get it recommended to you.
On tiktok, you see some godawful opinion and you want a further look at what exact kind of crazy they are? Are the being ironic? Is this satire? Oh, no, they actually do think that... Ex. Women should belong to their husbands. Welp, you're now gonna have tradwife / terf / alt-right / trumpie content on your fyp for weeks because you scrolled that account for a few minutes. You keep pressing 'not interested' but tiktok believes you're a republican now.
Here, you see something crazy - let's say, uh, Human Pet Guy (rip, example would be before he deactivated obviously).
You see a post of his and you're like "Woah, wtf, is this satire or is he just like this?" You go to his blog to check and Tumblr does not assume looking at human pet guy's blog = you want a human pet and does not start bombarding you with human pet content. When you are done trying to understand how someone can think like that you can return to the safety of your dash, which remains unchanged.
Long live the hellsite, please don't give us weird new algorithms
Okay look. Stephanie Meyer contributed four (4) cool things to the contemporary fantasy genre, which I shall now list here in the hopes of getting it out of my system. In descending order of importance:
1. Writing a story about a girl who wants something. Plot driven by a woman’s (non-vilified) desire. Truly dreadful execution but still a good idea, sort of a literary incarnation of the “he a little confused but he got the spirit” meme.
2. The fact that when Bella becomes a vampire she can still breathe but “there’s no relief tied to the action” which I remember verbatim because it fucking slapped. The idea of human physical sensations being partially defined by our mortality and the sensations still exist after you become undead but your experience of them is fundamentally different because you no longer need any of it? Extremely cool. The closest Meyer came to taking an interesting stance on vampires being dead.
3. Werewolves are immortal but they can literally stop whenever they want. That shit’s hilarious. Curse of immortality who.
4. The fact that vampires don’t sleep or get tired so their communally-raised baby doesn’t have a crib because she is always in someone’s arms. That was extremely cute and there’s a different, better book contained somewhere in that specific concept.
5. Depression being represented by like 6 blank chapters titled with months.
Knowing a fic author through AO3 is like attending someone’s thesis presentation and politely clapping at the end, knowing a fic author through this hellsite is like going over to their house at 3AM to watch them eat mayonnaise out of a jar
Sometimes I attend somebody’s thesis presentation and I’m so impressed that I follow them home to watch them eat mayonnaise out of a jar at 3am.
Sometimes I watch someone eat mayonnaise out of a jar at 3am with such fervour I am compelled to attend their thesis presentation
louis is so obviously someone who really loves and thrives off building the anticipation, feeling the energy, seeing the excitement, teasing fans, he fucking loves it. steve literally just said he wanted to make the night changes intro so different to get fans to think it was a new song and confuse them. it makes zero sense that he would leak his own new album songs that he’s so excited for and kept so hushed like can you think for one moment
sorry i was so weird but you invoked a topic i am incapable of being normal about
Harry.
James: [to Louis about Harry] And your impression was..cool, cool guy? I like this guy? This guy’s a cool cat?
Harry: [looking at Louis]
Louis: We didn’t know much about each other. [Addressing Harry] But yeah, you seem to be about.
Harry: [Facial expression equivalent to “Understatement of the Century”]
Louis: [voice getting higher] But yeah.
Liam: [watching Harry]
Harry: [scrunches nose]
Niall: [knows]
I think Americans need to understand how normal it is in other countries to have extremely limited hours of operation to ensure the sanity and health of workers are kept in tact. We are so accustomed and entitled to demanding people’s time that we forget that they’re… y’know… people
Being in Germany was really humbling because legit the GROCERY STORE would straight up close for almost 3 days because of how holidays would line up and the hours were already limited to literally be from 8-8 because people need to go home and live their own lives
It is very common for places in Spain to straight up shut down for 2-3 hours because people take siestas seriously since it gets hot and people deserve to take a nap
The world is not going to end if you’re inconvenienced by just… coming back later. We’ve been spoiled with immediacy and technology that we forget there was a point in time in human history where a person had to trek 20+ minutes down to the village bakery only to find it closed because of some family emergency and that just meant there would be no bread that day- and that’s okay!!
The discourse surrounding labor is so sad because we should not demand or expect things to be open 24/7 because we were not designed to be constantly moving machines. We need to relearn how to plan better since downtime is a wonderful opportunity to reflect and enjoy the moment. Not everything needs to be done with gusto and fervor. Sometimes it’s fine to pivot and just enjoy the moment for what it is and try again later. Touch more nature. Bask in the sun and rain. Breathe.
being the waitresses defense lawyer every time you go out to eat with your family. it ain’t much but it’s honest work
I just remembered my second Pride, where I made different flag themed daisy chain bracelets/necklaces to hand out. I need folks to understand something:
They were free.
They were fucking free.
They were maybe ¢60 of acrylic yarn each at the most, and the whole ziploc bag of them took 2 hours max.
Three people gave me sad eyes until I took their money.
Someone who was clearly the mom friend of their group made me take a $5 and gave a 10 minute pep talk.
At least four more people insisted on getting change to pay for the, once again, free bracelets.
In spite of all these shenanigans, the absolute best was this one person who I can only describe as, “queer surfer dude who looks like a boyfriend who looks like a girlfriend.” I can remember nothing of the outfit, only the impeccable vibes. I did the same thing I did with everyone else, explaining the bracelets were free, and they nodded along as they took the last 6 strand rainbow bracelet. As soon as they had it on their wrist, they pointed at something over my shoulder and, like a fool, I looked.
Next thing I know, they’re running off cackling, yelling, “YOU’LL NEVER CATCH ME!” and I’m holding a fucking $20. I had to stop at least two people from chasing them, cause they thought the person stole something, and then they tried to give me money cause they thought it was funny seeing me flail over people being Too Nice.
That was the year I got reverse-robbed at Pride. I hope everyone out there is having a good time and, in particular, that queer surfer dude is out there still causing benevolent chaos.
Kinks?
