FREE ART PROGRAMS
So recently I came across a fellow artist who was struggling to find a free art program, and considering dropping the large amount of money for a Photoshop license. I know not everyone can afford such an expensive program, so I’ve compiled a list of programs with no cost to download and use.
Keep in mind all computers are different, so not all will work for everyone. Also, I’ve only ever used Windows, so for the most part, I’m not sure if everything will work for Mac. if in doubt check the website linked.
Photoshop CS2 - (Windows, not sure about Mac.)
FireAlpaca - (Windows and Mac)
Sketchbook Copic Edition - (Windows and Mac)
Paint tool SAI 2 beta - (tumblr post on said program)
iPaint - (Mac)
Paintbrush - (Mac)
Pencil - (Windows, Mac)
Paint.NET - (Windows)
Seashore [still in development, ver 0.5] - (Mac)
ChocoFlop - (Mac)
Inkscape - (Mac and Windows)
ArtRage [Demo] - (Mac and Windows)
OpenCanvas 1.1[must pay for 2.0] - (Windows, not sure about Mac.)
MyPaint - (Windows)
Krita - (Windows)
Vectorian [Supports Animation] - (Windows)
Pixia[Japanese, some English versions] - (Windows)
Asperite - (Windows)
Chasys Draw IES - (Windows)
SmoothDraw - (Windows)
TwistedBrush Open Studio - (Windows)
If you know more free programs, please add onto this!
just wanna add that for 2d animation, opentoonz is the open source version of the software that studio ghibli animators used!
This is Scooby-Doo in a nutshell right here, folks.
So, these three are investigating an abandoned sawmill, because of course they are.
Shaggy stands in his designated Totally Unsuspicious Floor Square that’s utterly indistinguishable from the rest of the floor.
Trust me. It just is.
They talk for a bit… Scooby makes this face…
…and Velma is inevitably grabbed by a ghost yeti.
…additionally, I should note that being grabbed by a ghost yeti makes her hat change colors.
Next, Shaggy falls through the floor, because OMIGOSH IT WAS ACTUALLY A TRAPDOOR CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!?
…though, to be fair, I guess anything is possible in Scooby-Doo…
…after all, an entire new wall snuck up behind them between shots.
I freakin’ love this show.
the yeti put it there
Animation errors are beautiful because the background isn’t even the wall. It’s a flat image for background texture. They forgot an entire WALL

Any tips on drawing male muscular bodies like what you did with Male!Holly blue agate?
Well with masculine bodies (I am no expert on anatomy) it generally tends to be more broader and square-shaped rather than feminine bodies which tend to be more curved.
(These are really quick sketches) On the left is a more feminine figure where curves make the hips and legs slightly more protruding, whereas on the right the masculine build puts more emphasis on broad shoulders and would make the whole torso slightly triangle shaped.
With Holly Blue she already has a somewhat masculine build, so I didn’t need to change very much body-wise apart from making everything look just a tiny bit more ‘full’, if that makes sense (basically Holly Blue but more buff). The face however is what I changed the most, for example:
(This is all really general guidance though, not exact for every character!)
Any tips on hands?
Yes! Hands are one of my favourite things to draw! before you settle on any sort of style, you need to study real hand anatomy either online or via life drawing, understanding hands can be really tricky (which is fine, we learn as we go along).
As for some tips on the way I draw hands, here is some pointers I came up with, apologies for my monstrous handwriting:
I personally love to exaggerate the hands to be as bold and expressive as possible, especially if the mood is something action or adventure-based. Hands are almost like little characters of their own. You can modify them with big gestures or little details (like the pinky finger out if it’s a posh character) as long as it stays believable-looking. Some of my examples!
(Also, use your own hands for reference! You have hands, use them!)
