PSA this is a long vent post by a terrified Jew, so if you don't want to read that, then don't read this.
I’m sitting here thinking about the people shocked about the fact that literal nazis exist legally right now and that these people are emboldened and un-afraid enough to be doing what they’re doing, and I just….
If you’re one of those people. I’m genuinely glad for you because you haven’t had to spend your life genuinely terrified that there would come a day in the near future where people calling for the genocide of Jews, disabled people, LGBT+ individuals (and everyone else who nazis target. I’m aware I left some groups out. My brain is working on 20% right now and I just had to get a brain scan so please cut me a little slack and feel free to add on your own commentary or a group I haven’t directly named that are targeted), would be openly allowed to have those beliefs and be able to spread that hatred under the guise of freedom. You haven’t spent your life absolutely terrified because you KNEW eventually it would escalate past just “hate speech” because once those groups realized they could get away with worse things and be protected under the law in doing so, they would run with it.
I’ve spent my life living in a state that has one of the highest percentage of KKK members in the United States. I feel entirely unsafe in certain cities because the grouping is more concentrated in them.
I can distinctly remember multiple times in my adolescence where anti-semitism wasn’t just existing around me, it was directly pointed at me. When my twin and I were in elementary school, one of our best friends suddenly stopped talking or interacting with us and became…hateful, to us, in the worst of ways. Eventually our mother intervened and went over to this child’s house to politely ask her mother to stop her child from acting the way she was to us. Her mother sneered at my mother, told her “I don’t want children associated with k*kes , and I don’t want them coming into my house so they can steal things”. She then proceeded to insist my mother leave, and quite literally made her empty her pockets before she walked out the door, “to make sure you didn’t steal my good China”. My mother came home and sat us, at most 10 or 11, down to explain why this girl wouldn’t be our friend anymore and why she didn’t want us interacting with her, for OUR own safety. She also at that time explained anti-semitism to us the best she could (as we were young and didn’t fully understand). Eventually, because I wasn’t really grasping why someone would hate me just for being, well, me, she picked up her phone and showed us a picture of a Swastika, and told us, “if you see this symbol somewhere, exactly like this, get away from wherever you are. I don’t care if it’s in a month or five years from now. Whether it’s a friend’s house, a stranger on the street, or on someone’s body. I want you to either call me and I will come get you or send someone to, and if you are alone, I want you to find a police officer and stay with them until someone does”. That story stuck with me and still has to this day.
My brother has it worse, he “”“”“”“looks more Jewish”“”“”“ than I and my twin do. Since this has been going down, he’s lost roughly eight friends. They had been talking negatively about Jews, he politely pointed out that he was in fact Jewish and didn’t like being talked about that way right in front of him, and they cut ties with him. Almost immediately. That was one week ago.
I, and people like me, have grown up knowing those individuals never went away, just went into hiding of some sorts. They just became…quieter, about their views and actions and what their end goal was. So they grew and grew, quietly and undisturbed. And then we started giving them more and more open, public platforms to do so. They have become emboldened, not afraid of backlash, and self-righteous.
Giving nazis and white supremacists a platform to spread their hatred and violence was not “respecting their views and freedom of speech”. It was doing exactly what they wanted us to do. To sit quietly and let them recruit more and more people to believe the way they do so that their numbers grow and grow, to the point where they feel they can act outside of the law and do what they’re doing without fear of any really serious backlash. For people to turn a blind eye to what they were doing behind the scenes because they weren’t “REALLY” and issue. And THAT is what we are now dealing with. Hate groups that need to be squashed entirely and have legal action be taken to make sure they can not continue to do what they are doing, and be protected legally to do so. These are not just “views and opinions”. An opinion is that the color pink is ugly. These people are calling for and believe that genocide of anyone unlike them is the only way they will be “safe”.
So if you’ve never really thought about it in your life, if you’ve never worried yourself over the fact that there’s hate groups like that protected under the law that would kill you if they could without a second thought, I’m really happy for you. But some of us aren’t all that lucky.

“One of my plays is getting produced!” “What’s it about?” “So there’s this guy, and he really loves this one girl— she’s the girl of his dreams. But she’s going off to college. So he applies to every nearby college, just so he can be close to her. But the only college that accepts him is a clown college. But here’s the thing— he’s terrified of clowns.”
this is the funniest fucking thing and I’ve been thinking about it all week
