I fall asleep now on the other side of the bed wondering if you’ll pull me into your side the way you used to. I force my fluttering eyes open long enough to convince myself that the feeling of longing in my arms isn’t felt alone but you’re passed out worlds away on the edge of the bed and I light up a cigarette just to spite you and say “this is supposed to kill me before you do”, watching you jump up and snatch it from my lips with a “why the hell are you doing this” and I tell him that the pain in my heart always numbs with smoke-filled lungs and the idea that you don’t really love me like you promised you did
