what this garfield and friends episode thinks a biker gang looks like
MY SECOND ATTEMPT AT TRACKING DOWN THIS MYSTERIOUS COMIC BOOK:
- In the late 90′s I was in a comic store and I read a book that may have been a one-shot story in a grungy sci-fi setting ala Star Wars or the Fifth Element. The main character may have been a tall skinny woman with a pompadour (like a lady Space Dandy?) who may have also had shiny blue skin but I could be remembering that wrong.
- What I’m NOT remembering wrong is the other major hero of the story, a scientist who had done something to basically “accelerate his intelligence” so that he was constantly mutating or evolving into more intellectual forms.
- He began the comic as a goofy-looking cartoon slug with a big, bulbous cranium and telekinetic powers.
- In one scene he was using these powers to fight a villain whose design I don’t remember, but each was generating their own telekinetic energy bolts at each other.
- In another scene, a bunch of googly-eyed brains were emerging from a dimensional portal and one of them had glasses and a mustache. The scientist may have at this point transformed into a brain like them. It’s also possible that the villain he was fighting was one of them?
- In his final form the scientist became a talking protozoan, and he remarked something like “true intellect is only attainable in a single-celled state!” or some variation thereof, with a little amoeba responding with “indeed, chap!’ or “indubitably, old bean!”
- The details I’ve drawn and described are crystal-clear in my memory. I didn’t dream this, I’m not confusing it with another book and I’m not misremembering or stylizing the character designs; it genuinely has to have these exact three scenes, the slug and the brains looked almost 100% like I’ve sketched, and it MUST have existed in the 90′s. Last time I got like a hundred suggestions for what this comic could be and none of them were even in the ballpark of it!
Still searching for any leads on this comic after several years! I know it was real. It was 100% just a comic book with no related cartoons, games or movies, my memory of it isn’t off in any way (it never is), and it wasn’t an internet original - it was before I knew what the internet even was!

More serious next day comments: You can read it here. I still haven’t because I’m going to with rev later! I just skimmed through to find the panels I remembered. I was also right that it was a one-shot, there is no other media with these characters. DETAILS I DIDN’T REMEMBER (from what I have gleaned so far)
- The evolving guy wasn’t a scientist who did this to himself, but a caveman, and the scientist responsible is the bad guy
- Brain slug’s eyeballs aren’t as big as I thought they were
- The protozoa weren’t amoeba-shaped
- The blue skin thing obviously, and in another post I thought I remembered her having a red outfit at some point
- The brains don’t come out of a portal to another world but from inside of a robot
I actually thought these were embarrassingly glaring things to remember wrong but some people seem amazed at what I did remember? And over many years of periodically looking for this, a lot of the suggestions had so little in common with what I was describing, it made me wonder if memories are really that broad and loose for most people. I thought mine was the norm? Except for people with aphantasia, anything you find “interesting” just burns instantly to a permanent internal photo album, doesn’t it? One consistent thing was that of all the comics ever suggested, none matched the art style I tried to describe as “cartoon designs, but detailed painterly or watercolor artwork.” Was that the right description? I think maybe people had a hard time with what I meant by “painterly.” Most suggestions have been comics with flat colors and very hard shading if any! I don’t know exactly how my memory skimmed over there being a dinosaur, either, unless I literally skimmed the comic, and I think I might have. If I actually read it cover to cover in 1998 I don’t think I’d have overlooked any major plot point, but I might have skipped to nearly the end, and so only wound up remembering there was a brain slug and tall 50′s girl (can’t imagine why those two things would stand out! MYSTERY)
The Merry Melodies cartoon "Greetings, Bait" about a worm vs. a crab did SUCH an imaginative abstract gag here that really only works with a stalk-eyed character design. It's too bad they never used the crab in anything else.

several years ago i found this post on some finnish humor site. it was in finnish so i decided to translate it bcs i wanted that others could enjoy it too (and no, the original finnish version wasnt any more coherent than my translation, the only mistranslation in this post is that the “paper” should probably be “paper towel”). then i posted the translation to tumblr. suddenly.. the notes kinda just blew completely and this got posted on whole bunch of other sites too. and it spread everywhere.
