ive seen people use counting down from a certain number or for a duration of a song on their playlists too!!

[video description: a white person with short light brown hair and some stubble. they are wearing a black shirt and a fiery looking mask around their neck. as they speak, some captions appear on screen reiterating the points they are making.

“ADHD tip! i use this one more than any other one by far. (except, for white board of course)” [smiles and there is a heart emoji on the screen]

“if there’s something you have to do but you’ve avoided starting doing it, think of the smallest amount of time that you know you can force yourself to do, and set a timer for that amount, and do it for that amount of time. and then once the timer’s up, you can stop.”

“now you might be thinking, [higher-pitched voice] hey eric i have ADHD i’m supposed to be wanting to complete stuff and stuff, why would i want to quit in the middle of a task?! well i would say not starting a task at all is a much bigger problem than not completing it. and, once you’ve started it it’s much easier to keep going.”

“for example, i needed to clean my kitchen yesterday, and i could not get myself to start doing it. but i thought, i can definitely clean my kitchen for three minutes. so i started a timer for three minutes and started doing the stuff. and when the timer was up, i thought well, i... i can do another three minutes. and so i did. and then when that was up, i was like, goin’. and if you stop after the initial timer goes off, you succeeded in your goal of doing the thing for that amount of time!”

[yelling] “use those timers!!!”

[username @heygude appears on screen.]

/end video description]

I do this all the time.

Just five minutes. Just clean for 5 minutes. Just do work for 5 minutes. Just 5 minutes. Honestly with executive dysfunction (a huge part of adhd) it’s so hard to START DOING. It’s easier to KEEP DOING. Plus, 5 minutes now, means less time later when I am in a panic trying to get the Thing Done. It saves so much time in the end. As well as my mental health lol

In case anyone wants some perspective on how utterly random triggers can be. I haven’t lived in a house with a garage door in four-ish years. Right now at this moment, I honestly can’t recall what they sound like, except something metallic moving and rather clanky.

There was one on tv. I wasn’t even paying attention to it, I had my headphones on and was actively trying to tune the show out. My ears picked up on the sound of the garage door, and a jolt of adrenaline shot through my body as I grabbed my laptop and moved to get out of my seat and run to my room.

I realized what happened after about two seconds.

The sound is gone from my ears, but my heart is still racing and I’m waiting for the door to the house to open, to hear the jingling of my mother’s keys and her footsteps moving through the house. My muscles are still tense and I’m fighting the urge to run to my room and stick a board in front of the door.

For years, the sound of a garage door was my warning to pack up what I was doing quickly and retreat to my room if I was out of it.

I can’t remember the sound of the garage door right now, but I can’t tell my brain to stop trying to react to it.

This can be reblogged, if anyone was wondering. I wrote up this post with the intention that hopefully people who read it and didn’t really get triggers would understand a bit.

So, a thing that’s particularly important here: The trigger here is not the bad experience itself.

after my super funtime medical adventure, i had to change all my bath products, because my brain had associated the scent of them with being terrified and in extreme pain.

these were products i had chosen myself because i liked the smell. and they got connected to the medical phobia because i was using them to wash off the hospital reek and the fear sweat and so forth. i don’t know why they became a trigger. maybe because washing off the hospital smell didn’t make me not in pain. maybe because their ‘fresh pine ocean breeze bluegreen spicy stuff’ smell didn’t really replace the hospital stench, just mingled with it.

but for whatever reason, smelling these objectively nice soaps made me do flashbacks and get all hopeless and wobbly. so they had to go.

triggers are random. they’re often something that was simply present during a trauma, and you can’t guess what they’ll be. no one who hasn’t heard me explain this would ever associate suave naturals ocean breeze body wash with unbearable abdominal pain. so i guess the takeaways here are twofold:

- if you have triggers, remember other people can’t predict them, and don’t expect to be protected from them all the time. that’s up to you.

- if you don’t have triggers, don’t assume you can judge what a ‘real’ trigger is, and if someone asks you to accomodate them, don’t be a dick about it. even if you don’t want to make that accomodation, decline politely and apologize, don’t disparage their request.

This is a joke I guess? But also exactly what it’s like to have crippling anxiety cool thanks

This is a joke I guess

right so don’t mind me but

this is Limmy (the kilogram of feather guy) and he is a Scottish comedian who is VERY open about his past and current mental health issues, and below is a small snippet of his mental health tweets from over the years

we don’t see many men that are as open as him and we certainly don’t see many male COMEDIANS as open as him

so aye, his tv shows that have the accurate bits on mental health are very much based on his own experiences and v worth watching if you want a laugh from someone who Gets It

do people who aren’t from scotland not realize that Limmy’s comedy very specifically taps into that experience of mental health and alienation, especially in Scottish culture? it’s practically dripping from every episode.

i relate to this a lot.

“do people who aren’t from scotland not realize -” no. no they do not.

If you would report an undocumented immigrant to ICE you would have reported me to the Nazis and I don’t fucking trust you

A note:

I live in a state where you “have to” report anyone you suspect of being undocumented (that wonderful hellhole of Arizona). Now in practice this law has fallen far short, thank goodness. But if you live in such a place and they start enforcing it, here is how you get around it:

Assume everyone who doesn’t speak English is visiting.

Never ask about their job, because if they tell you they work here then you know they’re not visiting. You see them a lot for several weeks or months? Hm. Someone in the family must be ill. That’s terribly tough. They always dress in old, ratty laborers’ clothes? I feel you, my dude, I can’t afford new clothes either, and my dad has the fashion sense of an aardvark, so sometimes it’s not even about “affording” them. They say they’ve been here for years? You must have misunderstood. Spanish isn’t your first language, after all. First and last name? It never came up, or you don’t recall–you meet a lot of people.

And then, if you’re asked: no, you haven’t seen anyone residing illegally in the United States. Just people visiting.

Very good very important addition

Essentially, this is the civil society version of a work-to-rule strike.

Don’t do more than is expressly asked of you, and do what you are asked with such an intense attention to protocol that not asking you at all becomes more effective than even bothering.

In this case:

“Have you seen an illegal immigrant?”

“Could you describe an illegal immigrant, officer?”

*officer describes a person who is in the country without appropriate paperwork, or who has crossed the border illegally*

“No, sir, I haven’t seen any illegal immigrant.”

And this is correct. You have NOT seen an illegal immigrant, because you have no way of knowing if Jose Fulano is here legally or not. And since you can’t see his paperwork (or lack thereof), and did not personally see him cross the border illegally, you are only answering precisely the question asked.

I’m not American, and I have like, three followers, but this is important.

a surprising amount of really important activism rests on your ability to lie convincingly to people in authority

Our apologies

ann m martin, the author of the books, is an out lesbian. many of the writers and directors involved with the netflix series are black, asian, and latin women. they did their homework, cast a young trans girl to play a young trans girl, and included multiple gay children and gay parents. mary anne and dawn are both played by actresses of colour.

AND the series is smart and funny and very watchable for all ages—i tend to not really watch new shows aimed at a younger audience, but i watched all of season 1 in one day. it’s rated at 100% on rotten tomatoes right now, and that rating is well deserved.

anyways stream baby-sitters club s1 on netflix

Honestly as a blind person I’m so tired of seeing fictional blind characters who don’t use white canes or other guides. “They have special powers so they know what’s around them” or “they’re confident enough to not need a guide” are common tropes, and I’m tired.

Are people scared that using a white cane will make their blind character seem weak? They can’t use a cane because they’re so special that they already know what’s around them, and other blind people who use guides are inferior because they’re not special?

I’m tired. Give your blind characters white canes and other guides. Let them hold onto their friends, let them have guide dogs. Don’t make white cane users feel ostracized for not being “strong enough” to go without.

Another thing that pisses me off is when a sighted character comes up with the fantasy equivalent of braille and teaches it to the blind character. Braille was invented by Louis Braille, a blind man, in 1824. The blind character should be the one coming up with it.

Tldr I’m blind and tired of sighted people lol

🔪 Sighted People MUST Reblog This 🔪

Okay, I'm posting this here because this blog has a much bigger following than my main. This is the first time I've ever begged for reblogs instead of likes.

The morning of August 10th a massive storm called a derecho plowed through the midwest, devastating Southern Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, and the entire state of Iowa, which is where I live. Iowa was hit the worst. A derecho is basically the equivalent of a hurricane. Our highest recorded wind speed was 112mph.

1/3 of the state lost power, and almost 3 days later, roughly 400,000 people still don't have power. We have approximately 23 million acres of farmland, and approximately 10 million were destroyed by the storm. That's not good at all. Our crops are one of the state's main sources of economic development, and we lost so much.

The light green area inside the circle is all of our damaged crops. We lost a lot of silos and grain bins as well

Outside of our local news stations, there's barely any national media coverage on this. Ive only seen a couple, and the only ones I have seen weren't even that in that depth.

The above screenshot was from today(Aug. 12th, 2020) at 9pm CST. 2 days had passed before either of them wrote anything about it.

We have some cities that are either partly out of power or entirely out of power. One of the worst hit cities was even still recovering somewhat from a F4 tornado that went through it 2 years ago.

There's people stranded in their homes without food, power, gas and/or cell service. Please spread the word and let people know that we need help!

THIS, All of this.

Iowa is a disaster zone. I’m missing parts of my roof, probably need a new garage, new windows, new siding. My patio door was literally blown off its hinges.

My small town has no power, because the electrical poles were snapped in half like toothpicks. My parents live in Cedar Rapids, and they are completely cut off from the modern world at this point. They can’t make any phone calls because the cell towers were destroyed.

We are running out of fuel. There are still hundreds of thousands of us without power. Everyone has rancid food sitting in their freezers. People on wells literally have no access to running water. Generators and tarps are almost impossible to find. Banks are closed, and businesses aren’t taking debit/credit cards. The only way for most of us to charge our phones is to sit in our vehicles with the engine running.

We NEED aid.

There's a media blackout on this.

This is the breadbasket of the United States, this could potentially lead to a winter famine.

This is still going on. It’s 8/15 and about 150,000 households are still without power, including almost 60% of Linn County which has the 2nd biggest city in the state. See those big streaks on the satellite image? Two of them pass directly through major cities.

I see a lot of people asking what you can do in the notes. Ask your senators to pressure the federal government for better disaster relief, they’ve done nothing so far. Call our governor Kim Reynolds and tell her how badly she’s botched relief efforts. I don’t know if there’s anywhere you can donate to really, maybe people could put links in the notes?

It’s been super fun here, lemme tell ya. I never lost power, but I got very lucky. A solid quarter of my county doesn’t have power, and we’ve had a bunch of deaths in people who lost air conditioning and were in delicate health. (because it’s also been hot as balls this whole time!!)

Out by Cedar Rapids, at least 75% of the county still doesn’t have power. They’ve pulled in electrical line workers from as far as New York, Texas, and California, and we used up (checks notes) all of the spare electric poles in Texas to replace fallen or damaged ones. They’re scrambling to ship in more from California and Canada now, as well as wire and transformers.

Oh and yeah, a third of the crop people depend on is destroyed.

People have lost fridges and freezers full of food, and it was just after most folks stocked up because their EBT cards got refilled for the month. Some renters and home insurance is replacing it, but that’s only if folks have it.

It ain’t pretty.

An error? Is this even legal??

for real i’m so sick of everyone blaming women when their asshole partners share their PRIVATE, CONSENSUAL pictures with the public

I don’t remember the name but there was a case where a woman sued her ex for sharing the nudes she send him and she won because she consented to send him the nudes, not to public them anywhere.

If I remember the post correctly you can sue people who leak them due to the fact while there was consent to send them, there was not consent for distribution. So sue away!

Yeah it’s called revenge porn and it’s a class 4 penalty punishable by 1-3 years of prison and a fine up to 25,000

If this happens to you don’t keep quiet about it. It’s not shameful to be a victim.

Revenge porn is a crime, know your rights
