i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors

“red and green are opposites 🥰” cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a child’s finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit

ok i can’t explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like

with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, don’t distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing

is it too much to ask

gonna drop some sources I have saved on Pinterest! I don't know if these all link back to the original sources so apologies for that

This one's more for palette building but I think it's useful and can be applied to the other ones

"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!

This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!

Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process

With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)

thanks this is super helpful! /gen

Asexuals were always part of pride and it really fucking shows when people think it's a recent term.

Although not going by the term "asexual" yet, asexuality was spoken about alongside homosexuality as far back as the 1890s. Asexual history is just as vital to queer history as any other term and I'm so tired of watching us being treated like a new thing

This image is so so fucking important to me

yeah yeah yeah mortifying ordeal of being known and all that but sometimes a friend mentions something about you that you didn’t think was noticeable and it feels like your heart is being cradled in their hands

I'm sorry, I don't want to come across as harsh, but this is honestly ignorant as fuck.

I'm not gonna claim to know everything about the importance of studying dead languages, but I think I can safely say that it would probably be a really bad thing if we lost these languages to time if we didn't have people studying them.

We can lose hundreds if not THOUSANDS of years of story-telling history if these languages end up forgotten.

I can't put it into clear words right now because I'm busy or go int depth because I only have a common sense understanding, but I just wanted to address this. So if anybody on Tumblr who's more qualified to speak on this kind of matter wants to explain, then please take the floor for me.

  1. Many, many English words have Latin roots, so studying Latin can expand your English vocabulary to the point that you won't even need to check the dictionary meaning if you can recognize its Latin roots.
  2. Additionally, you can make up new words as needed by mashing together Dead Words.
  3. Lots of scientific jargon use Latin and Ancient Greek exactly because they're dead languages - the meaning of those words are set in stone. Studying those languages can help you understand and remember the extremely complex strings of words common in those topics.
  4. Latin is the Mother of Romance languages. Just studying Latin can make it easier to adapt to the grammar rules of the other Romance languages, or even help you Frankenstein out a meaning of a simple paragraph.
  5. All translation is a series of compromises. Even if Ye Olde Latin Text has been translated to English again and again and again, there WILL BE several points where the translator had to circumnavigate the translation to a phrase because the exact tone and concept is difficult to convey in English!!! (I am bilingual and this problem frustrates me to no end!!)
  6. And that's approaching this problem in good faith. We have a history of people outright lying about their translation credentials, deliberately translating a text "wrong" for their own benefit, or adding flourishes that drastically change the tone of the translation. Reviewing that 18th-century English translation of some 13th-century Latin book instead of just thoughtlessly reprinting it is vital to having a clear understanding of that book and placing it in its proper context.
  7. We have a LOT of untranslated archived material that have text written in dead languages, Latin included. Translating these provide us history.

And last but not the least:

Things do not have to be "useful" to have value.

also dead does not mean no longer in use, it means no longer CHANGING. No new words are being added to that dictionary. That’s all it means. Latin is only dead bc new words aren’t being added to its dictionary

2023

1. COMMIT TO THE BIT

2. PARTAKE IN THE DIVINE ACT OF CREATION

3. LET THE SOFT ANIMAL THAT IS YOUR BODY LOVE WHAT IT LOVES

For those who are like- huh… here’s a translation

1) Be funny/ continue the online joke: persona you are conveying ( Think Gorbachev)

2) Have sex/fuck someone ( It is specifying say straight sex but we can ignore that part on tumblr)

3) Partake in self care

STRAIGHT SEX? IM TALKING ABOUT MAKING THINGS WITH YOUR HANDS, RIVALING PROMETHEUS IN HIS IDEA TO BREATHE LIFE INTO CLAY. IM TALKING ABOUT TRANSFORMING YOUR BODY IN YOUR IMAGE TO MAKE IT TASTE SWEETER, LIKE WATER INTO WINE. IM TALKING ABOUT PICKING UP THE PIECES AND CREATING SOMETHING NEW, TO FINISH WHAT THE COWARD FRANKENSTEIN NEVER TRULY STARTED.

STRAIGHT SEX??????

let’s not leave out any of the unfettered rage

growing up being autistic but not knowing is just *hiding in room while people are over* *getting tired and needing to recharge after the smallest chores* *getting called a gifted kid* *knowing that you’re “weird” because people are making fun of you but not knowing how to stop being weird* *having adults tell you how “mature” you are* *getting in trouble for not doing work* *convincing yourself that you’re just lazy and stupid because you can’t make yourself do work* *getting really invested in “weird” media*

The way that you react to this clip is a litmus test for if you’ve ever been autistic in public school or not

For example, HERE is someone who HASN’T been

Okay, for people who may not get it:

What is being shown here is the exact type of bullying that lots of autistic people (and, in general, people who miss social cues) are subjected to in school. ‘Popular girls’ have a tendency to attempt to befriend their autistic peers for the sake of being their circus freak.

Chelsea in this clip is constantly invading Ruby’s personal space, grabbing at her, and is never not talking down to her. She doesn’t rebuke Ruby’s self-deprecating beliefs (instead opting for a “yeah, you ARE a freak BUT…” approach). Chelsea is literally manipulating Ruby into ditching school in this clip, and we KNOW, based off of other trailers, that she has bad intentions.

Chelsea is a bully pretending to be a friend, and Ruby can’t read her well enough to grasp that Chelsea is treating her like a weird little pet more than a peer. And autistic people who grew up facing this exact type of bullying can see it from a mile away.

A friend of mine from around here who is Very Christian and has never had a Jewish friend before was asking me some stuff about antisemitism today, and it made me realize that the ways people talk about various types of bigotry and racism are so designed to stump people about the nature and purpose of systems of oppression. "Why do people hate the jews so much?" is such a common refrain and while there have been many books and articles written pulling apart all the important contextual and historical things that can help people understand antisemitism SPECIFICALLY, what I ended up saying to my friend was this:

"Something to understand about antisemitism is it isnt just ideological. The expulsion of jews from various countries was very often a method of "legally" seizing their wealth when the church needed money. It has been historically an incredibly convenient source of both a group of people to blame and also an easy way to just... Be able to steal from people, lmao. It has served very concrete material purposes for churches and governments throughout history. Sometimes you have to approach asking those questions from a different angle because it often isnt about the hatred so much as it is about ... Redirecting energy and attention, right, like upholding structures that benefit those in power. The hatred is convenient because it allows those in power to take actions that would not be tolerated if the group in question were not considered to be Exceptional in their inhumanity. Like the undocumented immigrants now, asking "why do they hate the immigrants so much" isnt always a productive avenue of thought because the hatred is usually just... Useful. Rather it is more helpful to ask "Who does it benefit for these people to be treated this way" -> "what do they need to make the general public believe about that group of people in order to justify this treatment". I think sometimes we are made to think hatred of jews is special and rooted in something different than other hatred... It's not. I mean all types of racism etc are unique. But it very much is about justifying actions that benefit a ruling class in all instances, imo."

And she like totally got it!!! She was like "OH I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT LIKE THAT BUT THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE THANK YOU" I am very proud of myself lol :')

I wanted to add that though antisemetism is frequently weaponized by citizens of a country it also serves a bigger purpose if were talking why antisemetism keeps perpetuating itself for so long.

Its because there needs to be a scapegoat for the problems of capitalism and the state. its also why for whatever uncanny reason a lot of conspiracy theories about """secret jews""" describe the crimes of rich white people word for word but they spin on it and explain how its somehow us.

conspiracy theories are not freindly, antisemitisms function is to deflect blame off of the state / off of capital. its meant to direct the anger and pain caused by being exploited at a marginalized ethnic group than at the perpetrators.

non jews remember that next time you think antisemetism is irrational and fun to make fun of. its not harmless and has never been.

Btw you can be intensely critical of the Democratic party and recognize that it is full of aged out of touch moderates who are refusing to meet the urgency of the moment,

and also recognize that voting for Democrats is extremely important because it allows things like the confirmation of Justices and prevents the literal fascist party from gaining more power and that harm reduction is an important end in itself

These things can coexist

Politics is a long game. Being disappointed and angry today does not obviate your responsibility to participate
