The United States solar energy boom is finally taking off - in the worst way. In the Mojave desert and other federal lands across the West, utility-scale installations are putting gigawatt-hours of energy on the board and powering millions of homes. But the designs are sloppy, the labor conditions are horrific, and the environmental damage is incalculable. Ancient joshua trees are being clear cut, endangered desert tortoises are being left for dead, the vast biotic carbon stores of Mojave soils are being upturned, and the reflectivity of enormous expanses of desert are being altered, affecting the planetary climate. But it doesn't have to be this way. There's a type of energy that requires no fuel and no land. It hardly even needs transmission lines, as it can be built at the site of use: rooftop solar. Every hour of the day, rooftops across the United States soak up enough sun to generate petawatts of power. Estimates for their potential to offset US energy demand range from 13 percent to over 100. Yet at present, only around 2 percent of US energy is generated by rooftop. And then there's land area that's already been developed. Just by building solar on degraded lands, focusing on superfund sites, reservoirs, and farmland, researchers estimate we could generate more than enough to offset today's national energy demand. While there are points of dispute concerning some projections, the conclusion is clear: between the potential of degraded lands, rooftops, wind, and storage - plus existing hydro, nuclear, and other zero carbon energy sources, there's really no need to tear up the rare and fragile ecosystems of our deserts.

anyway im really tired of pretending that voting matters or does anything when all evidence is that the only thing y'all say it does is "slow the fascism down" rather than "stops the fascism". perhaps this is because the system itself encourages fascism and stratification of power and wealth and anyone who works in that system is obligated to perpetuate the system at all cost and above all else.

there is no such thing as a good american politician. there are well-meaning american politicians. but they are all proponents and advocates of the american systems which oppress us and, at the end of the day, AOC and Ron DeSantis are merely fighting over who gets to run the same system. isnt it just so weird btw how things constantly get nonstop worse even during democratic majorities? and how you keep having to settle with ceding partially to Republican fascist demands?

surely, you keep saying, voting blue no matter who THIS election cycle will do something

surely, i keep saying, you'll have to figure out it won't do anything at some point

Okay come on.

I know you know better than this.

When not being obstructed by Republicans, IT DOES A LOT.

Or, in case you missed it, Democrats at varying levels of government have brought us this HIGHLY incomplete list:

—a ban on book bans (Illinois, 2023)

—reproductive rights enshrined in the state constitution (several, 2022-2023)

—student loan relief (federal, pending)

—legal ban on racial segregation (federal, 1964)

—minimum wage (federal, 1947)

—mandatory accessibility minimums for disabled people (federal, 1992)

—paid sick days for railway employees (federal, 2023)

All of that is off the top of my head before I’m fully awake for the day. If I actually sat here and looked shit up I could max out the character count on this post.

If voting didn’t matter, REPUBLICANS WOULDN’T BE TRYING TO TAKE YOUR VOTE.

Voting can stop fascism. The issue is one of inertia. Think about turning a car around when it’s been zipping at 80mph. You can’t just stop the car. It doesn’t work that way. It’s got to slow a bit, then stop, THEN turn. Right now we’re in the slowing phase and we can get to stopping if we don’t give the fuck up. And then we start pushing the Overton window back to the left.

“Both sides are the same”/“your vote doesn’t matter” is how we got Trump, and it was proven to be a Russian psyop. You are falling for their shit all over again.

Democracy is an active verb requiring continuous engagement. Voting is just but one required action.

i dont really know how to articulate this but its crazy just how many people dont even realize they dont care about female characters. all their faves are men. they never talk about girls without being led into it. and when you try to point this out to them they try to defend themselves that their faves are just the archetypes they like, despite clearly not caring when that same archetype is a woman. like i feel like at a certain point it is your problem with the common denominator if you cant find a single female character to enjoy
