In a simple experiment, researchers at the University of Chicago sought to find out whether a rat would release a fellow rat from an unpleasantly restrictive cage if it could. The answer was yes.
The free rat, occasionally hearing distress calls from its compatriot, learned to open the cage and did so with greater efficiency over time. It would release the other animal even if there wasn’t the payoff of a reunion with it. Astonishingly, if given access to a small hoard of chocolate chips, the free rat would usually save at least one treat for the captive — which is a lot to expect of a rat.
The researchers came to the unavoidable conclusion that what they were seeing was empathy — and apparently selfless behavior driven by that mental state.

this just in: rats are more humane than humans

So when I see this

I sort of picture Lestrade saying something like, “While we’re here, why not make it a vacation, yeah? Come on then, let’s get a picture of you two.”

And Sherlock protesting, saying it’s ridiculous, they’re here on a case and it’s not a vacation, so Lestrade insists that fine then, at least take it to remember the case.

So John gets in close, not minding anyhow, because what the hell, he might as well humor Greg a little

And so he puts his arm around Sherlock’s shoulder

And Sherlock tenses for a second, looking down at John, but John is just looking at the camera, small smile already in place,

And Lestrade says, “Ready?” and he looks like he’s having issues with the camera,

So Sherlock gives a little smile and feels John give his shoulder a squeeze, and it actually turns out to be a really nice photo, so Sherlock keeps a copy of it on his dresser ~just because~

And John knows that he does but he doesn’t say anything about it because nothing needs to be said.
