Someone just left a hate comment on one of my fics and it motivated me to finish the next chapter out of spite! Thank you, anonymous shithead!
Hi,
It’s your friendly neighbor fanfic author here. In the light of this apparent new trend of people feeding unfinished fics to AI to get an “ending,” and some people even talking about “blanket permissions,” let me just say this:
I EXPLICITLY FORBID ANYONE TO FEED MY FICS TO AI. DUDE, THAT IS ABOUT THE LEAST RESPECTFUL THING YOU CAN DO. IF YOU DO IT, SHALL YOU BE EXCOMMUNICATED FROM YOUR FANDOM AND WALK ON LEGOS BAREFOOT TILL THE END OF DAYS.
That is my anti-permission.
Thank you for your attention.
Now that the post is over 10k and my notes are straight-up unusable…
One thing I wish I’d spelled out more explicitly in the original post because I see this point getting lost on a lot of rebloggers who don’t understand why the healthcare thing was such a big deal is like
The subtext I thought would be understood bc I lived back then but apparently has been lost today is that making sure queer employees and their partners had healthcare in the early 90s meant Disney was paying for a lot of AIDS treatment.
This is one reason fundie Christians were so upset and queer employees were so grateful. It’s one reason why it was such a controversial decision. It was a major talking point amongst my family, who believed back then that AIDS was a punishment from God.
(Some still do, I think. We don’t talk.)
I keep seeing people saying that Disney only chose that option “because of their bottom line” and it’s like??? Were you listening??? Disney has been paying for that decision for literally decades, but they’ve stood by it.
Like… the 90s weren’t like now! It wasn’t profitable to cater to the queer population of the country back then. They weren’t raking in money with this.
It’s in no way a perfect company but I fully believe in criticizing people for the specific things they do wrong and praising them for the specific things they do right. Disney has fucked copyright, monopoly, and labor laws and I’m not about to defend that. But they are well known in FL for being friendly to both queer people and disabled people, and that is unambiguously a good thing.
(Like side note, I could talk about Disney and accessibility for days. I have traveled extensively while disabled and no one does it like Disney.)
I’ve had people reblogging the post like “I straight-up don’t believe Disney is an industry leader in equal protections for queer employees” and it’s like ??? do you think I just pulled this out of my ass? If you want more information, go look it up! You’ll see that this is well-established history. It’s not my fault y'all don’t read! :|
Not to derail the purpose of this post, but Disney's wheelchair accessibility is SO DAMN GOOD that it makes me mad when I go places that do the bare minimum! Wheelchair ramps that are so far out of the way that they are an inconvenience for everyone! Store aisles that can barely fit an able bodied person, let alone a mobility aid! ELEVATORS THAT SUCK ASS AND DONT CONNECT YOU TO THE RIGHT PART OF THE BUILDING. Every day, I walk by places that I *know* are not accessible, without even using a wheelchair myself! It's so glaringly obvious once you know what good accessibility looks like!
ngl it's driving me a little bit fucking insane that the whole conversation about image scraping for AI has settled on copyright and legality as a primary concern, and not consent. my shit should not be used without my consent. I will give it away for free, but I want to be asked.
I don't want to be included in studies without my knowledge or consent. I don't want my face captured for the training of facial recognition models without my knowledge or consent. I don't want my voice captured for the training of speech recognition models without my consent. I don't want my demographic or interest profile captured without my consent. I don't want my art harvested for visual model training without my consent. It's not about 'theft' (fake idea) or 'ownership' (fake idea) or 'inherent value' (fake idea). It's about my ability to opt out from being used as a data point. I object to being a commodity by default.
y’all want some cool, muslim-made, modest fashion ideas?
absolutely nobody asked but here, have them anyway (all via the Islamic Fashion Institute):
An update regarding the OTW’s position on AI and scraping on AO3: https://otw.news/04ba07
I know a lot of people are talking about AI-generated fics, but I'm personally more concerned that my works, and the works of my fellow fanfic authors, were taken without our permission and now a bunch of tech bros in Silcon Valley are profiting of our art via AIs like Chat GPT. I have yet to see something marketed as "AI" that is ethical, either in its results or its data collection. AIs can only operate off massive amounts of data, and the only way these companies and products can make any money with a technology that requires so much data is to steal it. Technology was supposed to make our lives easier, not steal the arts from us, and now they are attempting to replace artists and writers by using our very works against us. Chat GPT is not "Artifical Intelligence", it is a pile of stolen data and fanworks attempting to imitate human intelligence and failing.
Anyway, Chat GPT and its ilk are now added to the list of things I would burn down if I could.
Huh. I just realized my most beloved, pathetic, wet rag of a character, Mathew Murdock, with Catholic Guilt and concussions the likes of which few have ever seen, helped me leave Catholicism.
I don't know if I can read smut with a straight face, but I can absolutely *write* it with a straight face
Hello! We are researchers at the University of Washington Human-Centered Data Science Lab, and we are studying modes of and preferences towards content recommendation. We’d love to have you participate in our study!
Survey Link (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScB96LBCcB3Voe-cxcrQN2mqEtHL0-69sgicAM1f_t_qfE9lA/viewform)
We’re looking for fanfiction readers and authors aged 18 and above. We’re interested in hearing from anyone who actively engages in AO3’s folksonomic recommendation system (using things like Bookmarks or recommending content to other friends etc.) and also uses platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Twitter etc. This screening survey will take approximately 5 minutes to fill, and if you’re eligible, we will contact you for a 1-hour interview.
All parts of this survey were approved by the University of Washington Human Subjects Division Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure the protection of your rights and welfare as you take this survey. Your responses will be kept confidential, although we may publish aggregated results. You may exit the survey at any time.

Am I crying from the pain?
Or am I crying from the fact that I'm usually in pain?
This database holds a ton of useful materials for embroidery! many different types of stitches in various difficulties, all incredibly useful!
Found ao3's data dump from 2021. Currently feral from the information at my fingertips.
I've been analyzing the data for over 5 hours now and it brings me so much joy.
Did you know that while ao3 fics and tag use have been steadily increasing over the years, not only was the largest jump in March 2020, but since then the difference between character tags, relationship tags, and freeform tags has narrowed? In previous years, character tags were almost more numerous than freeform and relationships combined.
Still in the process of researching why, but it's possible writers increased the focus on relationships or an increased use of freeform tags led to increased relationships tags. Both options could be true of either the influx of pandemic writers or of older authors adapting to the times.
For those of you unaware, ao3's tags are sequentially numbered based on time of creation. I have been able to independently verify the Tik Tok claim of what the first ao3 fic is. The first user-generated tags refer to a Wincest fic that has since been deleted. It may be possible that earlier posts did not utilize the tagging system at all, but this is the most definitive answer we have for now.
The more you know!
Struggling to figure out why there was a significant uptick in works in general in December 2018. I know most of the uptick was in Teen and General, as well as No warnings and chose not to use warnings, but I can't seem to find a reason in the data. Please chime in if you have any ideas on real world events I'm lacking
I feel like an idiot. Tumblr banned porn in December 2018. That's why there was an uptick in ao3 fics being posted. People were fleeing this site.
