How did the Trevor Project come about?

In 1994, the 3 founders of the organization were creating a movie called, Trevor about a 13- yr. old boy that tried to commit suicide when he was made fun of and alienated from his friends because of his sexuality. The film aired in 1998 on HBO. The producers and directors of this film realized that the some of the audience for this film could possibly be facing the problems Trevor faced in the movie. They could not find a support line, so they decided that they would form an organization to promote acceptance of LGBTQ youth, and to help with crisis and suicide prevention. The Trevor Project is the only nationwide, 24/7 crisis prevention lifeline for LGBTQ youth.

Ways to get involved and support LGBTQ youth

The Day of Silence is a nation-wide event that asks people to take a vow of silence for the day, as a way to understand what all of the LGBTQ people feel every day. This is because people that are LGBTQ do not have the freedom to walk around with their partner, and speak of their relationship freely, because they fear of getting judged and bullied because of their sexual orientation. By being silent, you are helping to stand up for equality of everyone, regardless of who they chose to love.

These are some warning signs of a suicidal person, and if you are feeling any of these you can call the Trevor crisis hotline, or chat with someone online.

Ellen DeGeneres reflects on coming-out episode, 15 years later.

We’ve been with you all the way on this journey and it’s so special seeing you go through all the milestones knowing what you’ve been through.. For me, it has been and always will be an absolute honor to stand behind you and say that I’m your fan! And I’m so proud of that!

Programs

The Trevor Project has 3 programs that help LGBTQ youth get assistance. The first is the Trevor Lifeline. This extension is open 24/7. The number is 1-866-488-7386. The second program is the "ASk Trevor" forum. This is where people can ask questions, and get a response as to how to deal with their issue. The third program is the Trevor Chat. This is an online messaging system that operates on Fridays from 1-4pm. This is where people can seek, non-urgent help and advice on what is going on, or if they just want someone they do not know, to chat with!
