Bones’ survival suit

headcanon that bones actually does have one of these suits but it’s in his kelvin pod in medbay which he hates because he’s the only person who’s not part of the bridge crew who has a kelvin pod and he’s complained to jim about it because dammit if they’re going to put kelvin pods in medbay then there should be one for every member of the staff and jim just looks at him and says ‘you have a pod in medbay because i know damn well that if something happens you’ll stay behind until everyone else is out even if it means waiting until it’s too late to save yourself’ and that’s what the pods are *for* they’re for protecting the people who would otherwise go down with the ship that’s why they’re called kelvin pods jim lost his father because george didn’t have one he wasn’t about to lose his bones for the same reason the pod stays but then bones isn’t in medbay when the ship is under attack and he ends up in one of the generic escape pods
and when they’re on the franklin and bones is reunited with the survivors of his staff he sees that none of them is wearing the survival suit from his pod and he gets angry because did none of you even try to get to the kelvin pod it could have kept you safer it could have gotten you out faster and not one of them even blinks ‘it was your pod doctor’ says christine and none of them have to say anything else and bones has to start grouching and barking out orders immediately so they don’t see that he’s got tears in his eyes because his staff loves him so much that every single one of them would risk their lives rather than take away just a little bit of his chance at survival
There was this weird theme that kept popping up. We all realized that Karl Urban (who plays the young Dr. McCoy) doesn’t take a bad picture, ever. There were these make-up continuity photos that were taken with Polaroid cameras, close-ups with a flash and everyone looks awful in them except for Karl Urban, Dr. Gorgeous. He was like [John makes a very manly, sexy face…we laugh]. So we started leaving pictures for each other in the make-up trailer, these really glamorous poses. Chris and I were doing it ironically and we, of course, looked goofy with these [male model] Zoolander eyes, Blue Steel eyes, except Karl Urban would do it and he would look like a real fashion model so he got a weird reputation for never taking a bad picture.

Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humility and awareness of my own frailty. - The Doctors’ Hippocratic Oath
