neurotypical: oh you’re autistic? you must be really good at math then!
me, who needs a calculator to check and make sure they added 10 and 5 right: buddy do i have news for you

the thing a lot of neurotypicals misunderstand is that hyperfixations aren’t just being interested in something or liking something a lot. it’s thinking about that thing every moment you’re awake, it’s how you get dopamine and a sense of happiness whenever you think about that thing.

and so of course your brain equates thinking about this character or this show or this book with happiness, so it won’t stop thinking about it. if it makes you happy, why not, right?

except it kind of sucks, at times, when you can’t think about anything else. when you accidentally skip a whole ass exam because you’re too busy thinking about it, or you zone out in the middle of a conversation because one (1) thing reminded you of it.

hyperfixations are great. but they also kind of suck.

what people think autism is: "I'm a shy nerdy kid that is really good at math and I'm in college at the age of 13!"

what autism really is: "i wrote down the dewey decimal system in a notebook for no other reason than because I like collecting and making random tables of information that I have no use for"

a friendly reminder :D

idk who needs to hear this today, but just a friendly reminder; if you’re scared that you might be faking something*, you are not faking it.

people who fake something know they’re faking it.

since you’re worried that you might be faking it, and not confident in the fact that you actually are faking it, you are not faking.

hope this helped you as much as it helped me! :D

*this can apply to mental illness, neurodivergencies, sexuality, gender identity, etc.

Dead tired posting this, I did housework all day before we got this notice. This week the landlord made a surprise visit to show the house to a potential buyer, and we were told to clean for the house to be shown to other potential buyers on Friday. We have every intention to have the house in order for the viewing, but our roommate is moving out this week so their things are in boxes. We got this notice on our front on our front door today:

I've been working to pull together a budget for a fundraiser and find out a dollar amount for what we need for a couple hours. I'm very tired, I'll get to messages in the morning.

I am so SICK of all of the misconceptions about autism that i see all the time

HERE ARE A FEW THINGS THAT I NEED EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT BEING AUTISTIC:

1. You cannot grow out of autism. Autism is a pervasive developmental condition meaning that it starts affecting the entire brain as soon as it starts developing in the womb and continues to affect it throughout a person’s life as it matures.

2. Autism is not a disease, nor a tragedy. Many autistic people think of being autistic as having a different operating system than those who are not autistic. Different, not wrong.

3. Everyone who is autistic is a distinct and unique individual. Though there are certain traits that many of us share, there is not one single trait that we all share. That is why it is called a spectrum.

4. High functioning and low functioning are HARMFUL labels that the autistic community almost universally rejects. Please drop them from your vocabulary and if you must, refer to the specific needs of the individual.

5. The spectrum is not a line. It is generally regarded by autistics as more of a circle graph with common areas of functioning affected such as Social, sensory, and verbal processing around the outside.

6. Autistic people are the #1 experts on autism. If you’re not speaking to an autistic person about the autistic experience you must take everything they say with MASSIVE grains of salt.

A common saying that autistic self-advocates employ is “Nothing about us without us.” This must be taken extremely seriously or misconceptions will continue to pervade our society.

Thank you for reading. If any autistics would like to add anything to this please feel free to comment.
