Afterward, Daniel gives it a good five minutes. He drifts his fingers down Max's back a few times times, then threads them up through his hair. His hair is always so soft after races, like hours of sweating in a helmet has changed it for the better somehow. It's times like these Daniel almost lets himself enjoy it--the closeness, the way Max melts into him, boneless and happy. It's fucking great to make someone happy. It makes all of this easier to justify.

"Sorry," Daniel says at last, shifting to reach for the nightstand where his phone sits. "Let me just--"

Max barely moves, doesn't look up, and really, that's fine. Daniel holds the phone behind his head and opens Instagram, starts scrolling. It's almost all people congratulating Max on his win. One pic from Scotty, the back of his and Chloe's heads tipped together against a beautiful sunset. A few boring odds and ends from other celebrities he follows. But mostly, it's all about Max. It's annoying how much his life has been about Max for the better part of a decade.

At least he's more in control of it now.

Please remember that "land back" does not mean "indigenous people are mystical elves with innate epigenetic wisdom of land stewardship and they don't belong in big cities," nor does it mean "non-indigenous people can't be farmers." What it DOES mean is that "non-indigenous farmers should be paying the equivalent of property taxes to the native governments their land was stolen from." It means, "there's a great deal of indigenous scholarship on sustainable agricultural practices that farmers should be taking into account, because indigenous agriculture was more advanced than European agriculture at the time Europe invaded the Americas and western agriculture *still* hasn't caught up in terms of figuring out how to produce equivalently high crop yields without compromising the ecosystem." It means, "non-indigenous farmers should be in an intellectual discourse with indigenous agricultural scientists and indigenous peoples that still do traditional farming, figuring how to repair the damage western farming practices have done to the ecosystem."

It also means that indigenous peoples should regain the right to sustain themselves on the land according to the practices they want, and they should have free reign to perform their cultural practices and protect their holy sites, as opposed to the current model where if they try to honor their dead on public lands they get violently removed.

Norse afterlife might be underground. It might just be really far north. If you go really far East there will be some kind of evil forest. You know the one.

If you read a thousand and one nights a weird number of the stories get set in “China” but when you read it, clearly it’s not China. It’s still describing things from the medieval Arab world. China was apparently just a code word for a long time ago in a galaxy far far away basically.
