Function? Funktion.

@torkhin

'Tis I, your local confused alien from Somewhere-Not-Here. [Main] - she/they - I tend to post about human rights and whatever fandom I've dived deepest into, if I post at all.

With the Oppenheimer movie getting all the garbage attention, unfriendly reminder that the US occupied Okinawa after WW2 and decades later "returned" it to Japan. Not only is there still an American base there, but Okinawa is an independent nation, not an Island of Japan. Neither Japan nor the US should have at any point taken control of the island.

Both governments are currently complicit in the unlawful occupation of Okinawa. Anyone who wants to learn more can check out Rob Kajiwara on YouTube, who is an Okinawan activist pressing for the return of the island to it's people.

PSA: *Beware* AI-generated fungi guidebooks!!

…Not a phrase I imagined myself typing today. But, via @heyMAKWA on Twitter:

“i'm not going to link any of them here, for a variety of reasons, but please be aware of what is probably the deadliest AI scam i've ever heard of:

“plant and fungi foraging guide books. the authors are invented, their credentials are invented, and their species IDs will kill you.”

…So PLEASE be careful if you run across anything of this kind.

(ETA: Corrected egregious typo in the title. Apologies, as I was [a] in bed [b] typing hurriedly and one-handed on the iPad, and [c] I think its native keyboard may need recalibration, but also [d] I was upset about what I was having to post, because seriously, WTF?!!)

New Jersey just passed a law that doubles the legal involuntary psych hospitalization hold time from 72 hours to 144 hours. They're claiming that there is a psychiatric bed shortage, and saying that this will help link more people to care.

This law is dangerous, harmful to mad/mentally ill/neurodivergent people, and will cause more psychiatric trauma. I'm incredibly worried about the way politicians are weaponizing the concept of "mental health crises" and "bed shortages" to pass laws that increase incarceration. Psych survivors can tell you that any time spent psychiatrically incarcerated is too long, but these extensions from 3 days to 6 days will have dramatic impacts on people's wellbeing. There are people who will now lose their job because they missed 6 days off work, have to arrange childcare for 6 days, miss an entire week of school, who spend days in solitary confinement, go through repeated strip searches, go through withdrawal, and deal with the everyday violence of psychiatric hospitalization for that much longer. It is crucial that we fight against any policies that give more power and authority to the psych system, and build up alternative systems of care based in values of mad liberation/psych abolition, autonomy, and disability justice.

We deserve care, not confinement.

Yeah you're right. It WOULD be pretty fucked up if you were a swan but you were raised by ducks and you grew up never seeing another swan or even knowing that such a thing as a swan even existed so you just thought you were a duck with something super wrong with it.

I, a hearing person who likes subtitles just as a preference, shouldn't have to read a subtitle that's obvious nonsense, go back a couple seconds, and listen again in order to figure out what's going on. An accessibility feature should not be the most half-assed part of a professionally made production. Scripted media has absolutely no excuse for not having subtitles or having subtitles that aren't perfectly verbatim. Professional captioning services should be ashamed of the shoddy work that they put out. Captions should be treated as a part of the production, just like filming, editing, audio balancing, etc - and anything that releases with missing or bad captions should be seen as unfinished

Its butch appreciation day appreciate ur local butch <3

I wasnt kidding btw

THIS POST INCLUDES TRANSFEM BUTCHES AND WAS MADE BY A TRANSMASC BUTCH LESBIAN. TERF LOSERS FUCK OFF

You know what… This really is one of the only alignment post that get the chaotic and lawful descriptors correctly aligned.

On the Lawful side: the two people who have to follow the recipes nearly exactly for the results they want - baking isn’t quite am exact measurements process but the margin of error for experiment is very, very thin. Tempering chocolate for use in structural works even more so.

On the Chaotic side: cooking and mixology where the margins of error for ingredients and portioning are so broad “whatever feels right” is almost never the wrong answer. The same recipe could be done a dozen different ways for a dozen different people and all of them would be a great outcome with minimal disaster in their wake.

This could also be an allegory for the difference between wizards (bakers) and sorcerers (cooks) - they’re all magic users (chefs), but the type of magic the weild and the source of their power is vastly different

You know, I was originally thinking that Dylan and Shiadanni should swap, but this convinced me they were properly placed, well done.

How is Dylan evil though? That’s either nonsense or worse.

Don’t look at it as a description of them personally, but rather the things they create. Dylan isn’t evil in a traditional sense, any more than the Tipsy Bartender is, but the things they create provoke a very visceral “Oh no what the fuck?!?!” sense of horror.

He’s called his own creations Abominations and War Crimes so i think he’d agree with this assessment

D&D has become so much more fun since it clicked for me that I'm not the character, I'm the writer in charge of the character

If you're the character, bad rolls and bad calls reflect badly on you. You want to Win because that means you're doing D&D right, and if things go wrong, it's because you're doing it wrong.

If you're the writer, your number one job is to do things to your character that the character does not like because that gives them the chance to be interesting.

as a huge lover of birds, 90% of the concern against wind turbines being used for energy is literally just pro fossil fuel propaganda. birds ARE at a risk however there is a lot of strategies even as simple as painting one of the blades that reduces a lot of accidental deaths. additionally renewable energy sources will do more in favor of the environment that would positively impact birds (and all of us). one study found over one million bird deaths from wind turbines. while that is a shockingly high number and we should work to drastically shrink it, at least 1.3 billion birds die to outdoor cats on a yearly basis. it was never about caring about birds

Good news! A significant amount of time and money is spent by companies who are building and operating wind farms to reduce bird deaths, and other animal deaths as well!

Source: I work in renewable energy construction and a way larger part of my job is dealing with birds and bird deterrent than I ever expected. I got the APLIC approved Avian Protection Plans all lined up and the parts for the deterrents for the substation are being delivered to site!
