Whenever Silna isn‘t called (Lady) Silence by the members of the expedition, she‘s refered to as a girl (or the girl, given that she’s the only woman they interact with). Nive Nielsen was in her late 30s during filming and while age was most likely secondary to acting ability (another example would be the historic Charles Des Voeux, barely a teenager when he left England with 19 years, being played by Sebastian Armesto in his mid 30s), we can almost safely say that Silna is around the same age as most of the wardroom officers, and likely not someone you’d call a “girl” in 2021.
And yet that’s what she consistently is in the eyes of the expedition, beginning when they first encounter her in Gore (and funnily enough it is said by Graham himself) and many many times afterwards. She is a “girl” when Hickey asks Tozer where they found her camp, she is (surprisingly enoug) still a “girl” when Fitzjames implies she might be know more than she let on about whatever is hunting and killing them, and she definitely is one when seen as the victim to getting kidnapped.
But when they wish to antagonize her, she “becomes” a woman. Sir John tells Fitzjames to “escort this woman off Erebus” after Silna’s father is dead and he simply doesn’t want her there. Crozier asking him to “take the woman to Terror” is meant to be an echo of the previous statement. Crozier asks Blanky and Little to “escort this woman off Terror and only let her come back if she is screaming for help in “First Shot’s A Winner”. Besides these instances, she is also a “woman” when Crozier officially addresses the Terror crew after Hickey, Manson, Tartnell and Tommy brought her forcibly to the ship, yet it’s under the context of a formal address to his men, among the the officers and the seamen, she is still almost always the girl.
I will say the terror is great bc all of these actors have whatever the opposite of Instagram face is. Adam Nagaitis has a face that knows cholera
the x files is funny because at the time it was “progressive” or whatever to have the ultra-rational, levelheaded character be a woman
but it’s also a show where all the fucked up alien shit actually is real, so she’s just constantly wrong about everything
What’s funny is how often they’re both wrong. Mulder will be like “the victims all had their livers scooped clean out this is obviously the aliens escalating from cattle mutilation” and Scully will be like “don’t be silly Mulder this is clearly just a serial killer who’s really good with surgical tools” and then it turns out the actual killer is an immortal sewer man who comes out ever quarterly century to feast on human liver.
I cannot stress enough that this is literally the plot of an actual episode

A very, very gentle reminder that "prev tags" is now completely useless, bc you can no longer click back thru the reblog chain and see the prev tags. You can see the reblog in front of you, and you can find the original post - by itself, completely devoid of context - but you can't click thru to the previous reblog. This is apparently intentional, since I literally emailed support about it - being able to click back thru the reblog chain and being able to see the source post in context on op's blog are fundamental parts of the user experience imo and I am pissed - and their response was basically like yeah we meant to do that but if you want to talk about it you can go to our WIP blog, where the ask is literally only open one day a week and we will completely ignore you.
