I’m a bisexual Native American and the two spirit identity/pride flag infuriates me because it’s actual cultural appropriation, and historically it was used by Natives to ostracize men and women who didn’t fit into the gender binary or were gay. I do believe it can be reclaimed by lgbt Native Americans because it was literally used against them in a negative way. Anyone who isn’t Native American shouldn’t be touching the term at all because it’s not theirs, and they have so many other terms that describe two spirit- like gender-fluid or non-binary or bi-gender. They MAKE UP these terms then have the nerve to steal ours. That’s a big reason why the black and brown stripe on the rainbow flag is a bunch of nonsense because the lgbt community was never excluding non white races, and adding those stripes implied that the community did at some point. Not just that but it’s current day two spirit by dividing people by race. Am I comfortable with my sexuality and race? Absolutely. But I’m not going to use a ton of different labels just to be put into a small box by myself when I can relate to other people that aren’t like me at all. We’re all in the same community for unity, separating ourselves is really just giving in to what lgbt-phobes want.
Fantastic point(s) made here!
The two spirit thing is so fucking stupid (the way they use it). They have no idea of what the history behind it actually is, they just think it sounds cool.
