One thing I absolutely love about Nimona's characterization is that she is not weak. She doesn't need rescuing or shelter or material assistance. She's been living on her own for over a thousand years. The only thing she is looking for is relationship—to be seen and loved for who she is. We see this in the interaction she and Ballister have after she speaks about sometimes wanting to let the people who hate her destroy her:

Ballister misunderstands her concern and promises to take her somewhere safe, to protect her. She remains despondent...

...right up until he says they will go together, when she perks up.

He goes on to say that she was right about everything. What she hears is that they now have one of the most fundamental perquisites for a loving relationship: a shared reality.

He despairs, saying nothing they do can change how they are seen by others. She gently points out that he changed how he saw her, didn't he? He agrees via body language.

This is what she needed. All she really needs from him is to be seen and accepted and loved for who she is. She is calmed and feels more secure than ever.

She steps forward out of the shadows and into the light.

I like that she is so powerful in part because it eliminates the relational complications of dependency. If she were a human kid who needed shelter and food and protection then there would be issues of consent. As it is, though, she is free to bicker with—and even get angry at—Ballister and he has no leverage. She doesn't need him and has no reason to stay except because she wants to. We know she is only there because she wants to be, and this keeps the story fun and uncomplicated and focused.

seeing analyses of nimona is fun because they have really good insights and are analysing every inch of this movie but in virtually all of them there is a gaping hole where the very obvious messages and metaphors in regards to race and racism in this film lay.

Like tell me, do you believe the story of a brown man, brought in by a black woman in an attempt to fix the systemic issues in a system where ancestry is valued over merit, is framed for the murder of said black woman by a white woman who is fueled by paranoia that a black woman’s efforts might upend the system, the supposed threat this brown man and of dangers that don’t exist and a desparation to fulfill the legacy of a white woman who is a literal metaphor for the way bigotry is taught (in particular homophobia/transphobia). And thus the brown man is villanised for something he didn’t do and is forced to find support and companionship in another victim of the system, with this story ending with the white woman willing to destroy everything than let the brown gay man and a trans girl change the system/her mind, has absolutely no racial implications or messages surrounding race.

a thing about she ra that I think is *criminally* underrated is scorpia and entrapta's friendship.

why? simple. they're some of the only people who actually try to understand and accommodate each other.

when scorpia rambles on about something she already told her, entrapta doesn't get upset. if she's annoyed, she doesn't lash out or demean her. she just checks if she told her with the recorder, and gently remind her she already said that. no yelling at her for being so annoying or loud. just politely telling her she already said that and scorpia responds to it immediately. when scorpia gets insecure in moment of truth thinking she's just bothering her, entrapta is quick to reassure her and tell her she can stay. no getting upset at her for being clingy. just reassuring her she can stay and explaining what was going on. entrapta never gets cross with scorpia for making mistakes.

this goes both ways. when catra shuts down entrapta wanting to drink hot cocoa in the north, scorpia is quick to go get it instead and make jokes about it. she is the FIRST one to defend her when people are too harsh on her, she vouches for her character with no hesitation. hell, she was able to think like entrapta surprisingly well. in my mind, they're very close.

neither of them are "normal" and they get each other. they don't expect the other to understand everything immediately. they just explain and are patient with each other even when they struggle.

(don't tag as ship.)

Seeing takes about why Ballister/Ambrosius fics outnumber Nimona/Gloreth fics by leagues is so funny. One is an explicitly canon gay ship with a lot of screentime devoted to it. The other, while being key to the story, has 10 minutes of screentime. Also, it's implied at best.

Do the math now. It's not rocket science.

so i told my dad that there was a coup in russia and he asked me where i heard about it

how do i explain destiel has been giving me all the news about current happenings for the past weeks without him losing all his respect for me

rewatching she ra is a wild ride man like damn I forgot how obviously traumatized adora is in retrospect. how she acts around angella? "People like me better when I'm she-ra"? running to get some sort of validation from any adult figure the second everything in her life goes to shit? her first reaction to a perceived fuck up is to self punish and leave glimmer and bow entirely since she "ruined" their lives by being "irrational" in shadows of mystacore? the fact everything is her fault in some way somehow since season one??? holy shit she was seriously considering staying behind with light hope and never leaving because she thought her friends were better off without her. I forgot how much she self punished. whoever thinks adora didn't suffer in she ra has never watched the show istg

also just. the fact she sleeps with a *knife* is so telling. what happened to her in the horde that made her feel the need to start? she was fully prepared to fight shadow weaver the second she woke up. she *sleep fights.* what the fuck did they do to her. this kid has been through so much.

the gimmick blogs are like tumblr’s rogue gallery. yes we’ve got some heroes, yes we’ve got some villains, but more importantly if you look over here you will see some freak who devotes all their time to counting the number of “t’s” in a post
