Variety blog. I post and re-blog stuff I'm interested on, and sometimes a rare personal post once in a while.

actually incredible how this site really turned much better after the porn ban somehow is so chill, but nearly all people I know moved to twitter so I barely have a reason to open the app

I moved to twitter because I was growing tired of the algorimth flagging a ton of my posts but anyways maybe the people who made tumblr infamous for being a warzone were actually consuming the porn they were complaining about lol

Considering twitter is now falling apart and running on spaghetti code I been wanting to use tumblr again and try Mastodon but many of the people I follow are still attached to twitter lol

By the way the reason you should care about AAA games being horridly broken and unstable isn't just because you're being ripped off, but because it's the most common sign of horrific workplace practices like crunch that are absolutely abusive management and which both lead to shittier games and more importantly, the ruined health or even deaths of the actual game developers.

Me yesterday: Aww, Evelyn is such a shy bean! And her sisters are all of different colors and their names are references to different times of day, how clever!

Me today: The Battle Chatelaines are a family torn apart by the death of their parents and the subsequent failure of the Battle Maison as people stop coming by and its seriously weighing on all of them, Morgan is trying so hard to make it an enjoyable experience for their guests by not going all out and instructing her sisters to do the same but in doing so not only is she putting more stress on her sisters but it might actually be making the Battle Maison less popular because it isn't a challenge to those who want one and Morgan doesn't even realize that, Dana seems to know that Morgan is wrong but she feels she can't say so because Morgan terrifies her and as a result she holds herself back so much that she has two Pokémon on her team that aren't fully evolved or holding an Eviolite even though evolving them should be relatively simple, Evelyn has cracked under the pressure and is a complete nervous wreck with no self-esteem and she practically has a panic attack if she wins because it's been drilled into her head so much that she has to lose or people will stop coming by, Nita is the only one who enjoys herself and is confident and she's much more willing to go all out as evidenced by her being the only sister to have both her multi battles be in the super multi battle course but she is constantly chided by her sisters and especially Morgan for the attitude which could very well be the only reason the Maison is seeing any visitors at all anymore, WHY ISN'T ANYBODY TALKING ABOUT THESE CHARACTERS?!

Regarding Volo at the moment, but also in general with any hardcore villainized characters, I certainly get the sentiment behind wanting to not woobify antagonistic characters too much, but also like. I think for me, when the primary fandom take away is that a character is HARDCORE IRREDEEMABLE, NO GOOD QUALITIES IN THIS ONE!!! it’s almost like… an act of balancing out. Yes, I get Bad Man did Bad Things, I’m a person with a brain, but when it seems like EVERYONE is talking about how the Bad Man did Bad Things and needs to be, generally, physically harmed for the Bad He Did, it just feels like an act of balance to say,

“Okay but why don’t we explore this line where he said he’s experienced trauma before? And how he instantly backs away from talking about it under the explanation he gave himself that everyone must experience trauma to that degree?”

Or, “Hey, the guy has three friendship evolution Pokémon, two of which notably will leave their trainers if they don’t like them. Why do people extrapolate from that that he must be an abusive trainer?”

Or, gods fucking forbid, “Hey. Why is this character, who’s notably got indigenous roots to the setting, constantly being made the villain in angsty stories for the two white twins?”

Idk man, again I get not wanting to woobify too much, not wanting to strip a complex character of their complexity and the like, but if your takeaway is that any sympathetic or nuanced takes on a heavily villainized character is “woobifying,” like… idk, touch grass as the kids say. Who’s going to stop me, the Anti-Wooby Police?

There's a lot to unpack here but I'm just going to say the people equivalent to the indigenous people of Hokkaido, the Aynu, are the Diamond and Pearl clan people. Conspiracy theories about how the Aynu are not indigenous by far right groups include among others a theory that there were people far before them which kinda is what accidentally or not Legends is going for. Volo seems is analogous with the Greeks, and is extremely unlikely the Greeks made it all the way to Japan. Volo being the Legend's villain and paralleled with a fallen angel/izanami does not come from wanting to antagonize the Aynu but may or may not be poking fun to those conspiracy theories (even tho all around Legends is really far for great representation of the Aynu).

It also wouldn't be the first time Pokemon give us hints a character has many sides to them, Volo is also supposed to parallel Cyrus, who has Pokemon that evolve with friendship stat and similar goals. Silver also was like this far before his change of heart, when he was equal minded to Giovanni and only wanted to stop Team Rocket as a gotcha, not because he believed Pokemon are equals.

Heya. So I’ve actually posted about the conspiracy theory before, I’m fully aware of it. I’d be open to thinking PL:A was trying to “poke fun” at the conspiracy theory… if there was any nuance given to the primary colonizing group, the Galaxy Team, that didn’t make them out to be some group of Saviors that came from out of Hisui to Tame The Land. I talk a bit more about it in my tags for the linked post here,

Essentially, if they had handled the depiction of the other groups to their real counterparts with any nuance, I’d say it was probably meant to “poke fun.” The fact that the game uncritically says that the Yamato colonizers (The Galaxy Team) were good and the Ainu (the Clans) just had to bow to their whim because they were “uncivilized,” makes me think the developers really didn’t care to dig deeper into the Jomon (who would be the Celestica!) either. IMO it’s some cheap and lazy bullshit to lean into, as you stated yourself, a far right conspiracy theory, rather than try and do any research or insight into Hokkaido’s ancestral people.

In the lore of the game Celestica people were there, then their civilization disappeared and there were no more people, and the people that became the clans came from across the sea, the clans that are meant to represent Aynu who as you pointed out descend from the Jomon people. Celestica people are portrayed very foreigner intentionally avoiding all Jomon, Yayoi, Aynu, Yamato etc. aesthetics borrowing Greek/Roman inspiration doric columns and togas and all. It also doesn't make sense Jomon were *already there*, so sorry I don't buy at all Volo and Cogita being Jomon people lol even their names are in Latin in the Japanese version of the game. Cogita also dresses and lives very western even for an era were western imports were becoming popular probably to drive the point of her mystery. While the clan people references (very miminal and watered down) the Aynu mixing Mongolian and Yamato stuff (yikes). The developers are likely very familiar with the history and they intentionally went for this angle, regardless how much they missed the mark or not. The game handles a lot of things poorly as multiple people even Aynu and Aynu hobbyist/historians have pointed out and has the tact of a truck.

I saw in the past way before Legends was a thing how people joke about Cynthia's looks and how her Japanese name can be translated as "whitey". Guess Legends gave that another layer.

If I had a nickel for every time I got attached to twin brothers who were very close but ended up separated and one lost his memory I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice right

BW has a couple of Mother 3 references so if it turns out they destroyed Ingo's life for a Mother 3 reference I'm gonna go berserk

An examination of the infamous and commonly exaggerated “What a passionate person” scene, in both English and French. (Note: The original Japanese dialogue matches the English translation almost exactly, so I won’t bother addressing it.)

In the English version, the professor is obviously calm while speaking about Lysandre. His sentences all end in periods…

…until he starts talking to you about your journey. Now we’ve got exclamations!

It’s amazing how many people read Lysandre’s hate speech perfectly fine, but as soon as Platane says “What a passionate person,” they resolve to not read ANY of his dialogue past this point for the rest of the game. I’ve seen so many make fun of him and portray him as gushing unabashedly over Lysandre and his views, so I was very surprised when I got to this part of the game and was able to see what actually happened. Oh! Not only is the professor so calm, but he’s quick to strongly imply that you probably shouldn’t take Lysandre’s views to heart and supplants them with something wholesome. Where was this in fandom??

I, personally, was given the impression of a scientist making an analytical observation, stating Lysandre’s demeanor and pondering on the motive. Lysandre IS passionate. Where is the lie? Platane is at no point agreeing with the hate speech, and is clearly telling you that you don’t have to agree, either. And then he seems much more concerned about YOU, the player, and how you’re doing.

I can’t deny that the French version seems to be much more in line with the fan portrayal…at first. Here he is jazzed as all get out over Lysandre –

“What fire, what passion! What an orator! There is such heat that emerges from him! Like a blaze! I imagine that it’s the pride of his lineage that speaks.”

‘What an orator’? Yes, French!Platane does seem suspiciously in Lysandre’s corner. But then he IMMEDIATELY turns it around and is just as emphatic in speaking against him.

“But the words of Monsieur Lysandre actually only express his point of view, not necessarily THE truth. Bah!” The ‘Bah!’ at the end cracks me up every time. I can’t help imagining him doing a dismissive hand wave.

“Screw what Lysandre says. BAH!”  (  ≡︶ ^ ︶≡)ノ

Sycamore earned that reputation (and then degenerated into comedy) because he says that in reference to the horrible almost discriminatory and eugenistic sounding speech Lysandre just gave and everyone agrees it was better if he said nothing at all.

When the game came out there was a lot of negative reactions to that scene and Sycamore's popularity took a hit. It was funny how for a while there was less fanart than when he was first shown in press.
