I don't feel like I'm a "true" punk, I don't have a "fuck you" mindset, among a few other things. I do like the punk diy things, which heavily inspired me to start doing stuff with my clothes, repair them, reuse them, make patches, etc, and I'm really thankful for that. I also like punk clothes (but dressing punk =/= being punk, I know). I don't know if I can truly be punk with the way I live and am, or if I can only be punk adjecent.
Well, to tell you the truth, there is nothing wrong with not being a punk (so long as you aren’t a dick of course). And there are plenty of other alternatives groups out there that do a lot of the same diy things punks do (goths, grunge, metalheads, etc)
Though I think the idea of being a ‘true’ punk is very subjective. You seem to base being punk on a ‘fuck you’ attitude and way of life. Personally, I don’t believe thats what really makes someone a punk, but rather something that you often see people in the subculture grow to adopt.
Of course, there are also different ideas of what ‘punk’ even is! Many people associate punk with trouble makers who do what they want when they want no matter what anyone says. Others think of punk as a counter culture where people care about each other and are fighting for whats right.
The point I’m trying to get to is that I dont think having a ‘fuck you’ attitude is the big ‘gotchya’ for being punk. I think what makes someone a punk is based on their values. Do you care about people? Do you do your best to stand up for whats right? Do you think there are things in the world that need to change? Are you doing anything about it? Even if its just spreading awareness? Then I think thats pretty punk of you.
And even if you still dont feel like you are punk right now, but its something that you want to be. You can. You can work on yourself, you can spend time learning and advocating for things, you can spend time helping your community. You dont wake up one day and decide you are a punk, its something you work towards over time
And one last thing:
all you have to do is keep it running. just keep it going.
