BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! - (Guy Maddin, 2006).

A great avant-garde silent film directed by Guy Maddin from a script co-written with George Toles. The movie, characterized by not professional actors (actually the inhabitants of Seattle where the main action takes place) tells, by 12 flashbacks, various events in the life of Maddin himself and can be considered a sort of avangardist biopic successful experiment.

I simply do not have the vocabulary to explain what it is about Guy Maddin's movies that I love. The best way I can describe it is that there is a crank in my brain, and when you turn that crank Brand Upon The Brain!* is projected against the inside of my skull.

*the film reel attached to this crank is changed from time to time.

So, years ago, my best friend, James, passed away by suicide.

We always dreamed of making movies together in the future. It was the plan.

The plan started with the footage here. This little video I'm sharing comes from the DV tapes we shot on in 2007.

We never finished anything, but we had fun, damnit. I don't think we ever even thought about editing.

But after 13 some years I decided to think about it. And then I did it.

A lot of what we shot got recorded over for with random crap. A fault of mine that I'll always regret.

But I had enough to make a semblance of a storyline. I think there's footage from three separate movies we were making in this thing.

This isn't finished. It's close, maybe. But I want to make it better. Mostly I'm posting this for some kind of strange accountability.

I don't really know if this is of interest to people. It certainly isn't 'good'. It's littered with my own nostalgia.

It was a few dorky 16 year olds having the time of their lives. And I'm proud of it.

I’ll share the scripts I wrote, too. Even though I know I’ screaming into the tumblrvoid.
