Finwëan Ladies Week: September 18-24, 2023

Hello and welcome to Finwëan Ladies Week!

This is a week-long event celebrating the ladies of the line of Finwë! There have been events within the Silmarillion fandom focused on the sons of Finwë and their descendents, and to add to the fun this week was established to give his wives, daughters, and other female descendants their own time to shine.

Finwëan Ladies Week began in 2019 and has run every year since. We are back for more in our fifth year, this time from September 18-24, 2023!

Any content and creations about the ladies of Finwë’s line are welcome! You can create edits, gifs, fanart, fanfic, fanmixes, and more!

Below are some prompts for each day of the week. They are not mandatory, but they are here to inspire you. This page will lead to a detailed explanation for each one.

DAY ONE: Míriel Þerindë and Indis DAY TWO: Findis and Írimë Lalwen DAY THREE: Aredhel and Galadriel DAY FOUR: Later Generations DAY FIVE: Ladies Who Married In DAY SIX: Original Characters DAY SEVEN: Freeform

This event is being organized by mods Anna @arofili and Elle @elesianne. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to message this blog or reach out to Anna on their main blog. Anna runs on Pacific Standard Time, and Elle runs on Eastern European Summer Time, so we will be active and modding on those schedules, although you are free to post your content at the time most convenient to you!

lord of the rings ladies week day five | elves | nimloth and mithrellas | @lotrladiessource

[Mithrellas] was one of the companions of Nimrodel, among many of the Elves that fled to the coast about the year 1980 of the Third Age, when evil arose in Moria; and Nimrodel and her maidens stayed in the wooded hills, and were lost.

@tolkienofcolourweek day three | men | andreth saelind

Andreth was a woman of the House of Beor, the sister of Bregor father of Barahir (whose son was Beren One-hand the renowned). She was wise in thought, and learned in the lore of Men and their histories; for which reason the Eldar called her Saelind, ‘Wise-heart.’

@tolkienofcolourweek day one | ainur | the blue wizards

Their task was to circumvent Sauron: to bring help to the few tribes of Men that had rebelled from Melkor-worship, to stir up rebellion and after his first fall to search out his hiding (in which they failed) and to cause dissension and disarray among the dark East... They must have had very great influence on the history of the Second Age and Third Age in weakening and disarraying the forces of East who would both in the Second Age and Third Age otherwise have outnumbered the West.

lord of the rings ladies week day seven | hope | gilraen | @lotrladiessource

“This is our last parting, Estel, my son. I am aged by care, even as one of lesser Men; and now that it draws near I cannot face the darkness of our time that gathers upon Middle-earth. I shall leave it soon.” Aragorn tried to comfort her, saying: “Yet there may be a light beyond the darkness; and if so, I would have you see it and be glad.” But she answered only with this linnod: “Ónen i-Estel Edain, ú-chebin estel anim: I gave Hope to the Dúnedain, I have kept no hope for myself,” and Aragorn went away heavy of heart.

lord of the rings ladies week day six | original characters | rohiril, daughter of faramir and éowyn | @lotrladiessource

Rohiril was the second child and only daughter of Faramir, Lord of Emyn Arnen, and Éowyn Shieldmaiden. She took after her mother in her love of horses, and her father in her love of those who defended her home; she married one of Faramir’s knights, Silevegil, and bore them a son. This child, Barahir, would eventually inherit his uncle Elboron’s title and passion for lore, writing the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen which survived in an abridged form through the ages in the Thain’s Book.

lord of the rings ladies week day four | women of the south | ellanel meldatári | @lotrladiessource

Ellanel was the daughter of Evrindil, daughter of Elessar and Undómiel. She was dear to her uncle King Eldarion, and when he advancing in years had no children of his own, he named her his heir in the tradition of Númenor. Thus upon his deathbed, Eldarion surrendered the scepter to his niece, and she was named Ellanel Meldatári, First Ruling Queen of the Dúnedain in Middle-earth and Third High Monarch of the Reunited Kingdom. In her first years as Queen, she faced an attempted coup in the form of the Cult of the Dark Tree, but with the aid of her younger brothers Prince Tondir the Just and Prince Malfinor the Wise, she subdued the rebellion and prevented the rise of a New Shadow like unto the one vanquished by her grandfather King Elessar. Queen Meldatári ruled wisely and justly for nearly a century, much beloved by her people, and traveled far and wide, treating with her neighbors in their own lands and strengthening many alliances that would hold for generations after her reign.

[Ellanel is a Sindarin name altered from Ellonel, a rejected name for Arwen. Strictly it translates as “elf-daughter,” but I’ve chosen to interpret it as a compound of elda (“elf”) and aranel, meaning alternately “elf king” (as in Dior Aranel) and “princess” (as in Emerwen Aranel), which would give the translation “elf princess.” Meldatári is a Quenya name meaning “beloved queen.”]

lord of the rings ladies week day three | dwarrowdams | dís and her ancestresses | @lotrladiessource

Thordís and Eydís were sisters of the Line of Durin. In the ancient tradition of their foremothers, they were each simply given the name “Dís” upon their birth, with a unique prefix added when they came of age. According to their mother Arndís, this custom stretched back to Alfdís, daughter and heir of Durin I the Deathless himself. Thordís received her name for her boisterous, thunderous laughter, while Eydís earned hers for her cleverness and good luck. The sisters each married into Longbeard royalty, Thordís wedding Prince Thráin II and eventually becoming his queen, and Eydís wedding Prince Náin of the Iron Hills. Thordís had three children: Thorin II Oakenshield, Frerin, and a daughter, once more named only Dís. Eydís bore only one child, Dáin II Ironfoot, and the cousins were fast friends in their youth. But when the dragon came, Thordís was slain, and her children dispossessed from their kingdom. Thus it was that Dís daughter of Thordís had no mother to name her when she came of age, and in honor of her fallen mother she refused to take a prefix altogether. Shortly after the Fall of Erebor, both Frerin and Náin were killed in the Battle of Azanulbizar, where Thorin and Dáin won great renown. Though Eydís remained in the Iron Hills, she never forgot those she lost, and when Thorin called upon Dáin for aid in his Quest to reclaim Erebor, she urged her son to heed his call. Alas, Thorin died in the resulting battle, leaving Dáin to inherit the throne. Then at last Eydís reunited with Dís her niece, last of her siblings, and offered her a new name: Freydís, for her noble courage in the face of much hardship. This name she accepted in her heart, though to all others she was yet known only as Dís, daughter of Thráin.

lord of the rings ladies week day two | women of the north | vidumavi galadwen | @lotrladiessource

Valacar gave to his son the name Eldacar, for public use in Gondor; and his wife bore herself wisely and endeared herself to all those who knew her. She learned well the speech and manners of Gondor, and was willing to be called by the name Galadwen, a rendering of her Northern name into the Sindarin tongue. She was a fair and noble lady of high courage, which she imparted to her children; but though she lived to a great age, as such was reckoned among her people, she died in 1344.

For @tolkiengenweek day 7: freeform

--

Elwing awoke to the sensation of plush carpet against her cheek. The room she was in was bright, and there was a smell of salt in the air.

She heard voices, murmuring quietly nearby. They were talking about her.

“Why is she on the floor?” A warm, concerned voice said.

“She wouldn’t sleep in the bed,” A clear, strong voice responded. “I’m not sure why. Maybe she was attacked in her bed.”

Sounds and images came rushing to Elwing’s mind. Her father, rushing to her bedside, his eyes wide with fear.

Concert

Even though Makalaure is the musical prodigy of the family, Maitimo still spent a good part of his youth mastering his instrument, and he likes to perform to his small audience.

Lalwen likes to listen to her nephew whenever she has the chance and Maglor, well, he likes not being the performer from time to time.+

Where I Cannot Follow

@tolkiengenweek Day 7: Freeform

_____________________________________________________________

The wind was unseasonably cold, biting at her cheeks where tears ran in silence.  She had not moved from her vigil since her nephew had marched away with all who could wield sword or spear or bow, save herself only.

In the days that followed, no news came, no messenger, no lone survivor to bring tidings.  As the days turned to weeks, messages became unnecessary.  Now dawn brought not hope but a final release of it, the pale light offering no hint of what had passed to the east but a whisper in her heart: run, flee, nothing remains.

Without turning she addressed the lady who waited upon her.  “We will leave at twilight.  Do not laden carts, nor burden animals but with the most crucial of needs.  Ring no bells, sound no trumpets.  We will pass like the thrush.”

The lady curtsied and rushed away to spread the word.  All of Hithlum in a single day would empty, leaving home and hearth behind.  But also leaving the Edain to face the coming storm alone.

Lalwen found no pity left in her heart.  It would not be the first time she had left all behind.  Once she had followed her brothers, headstrong and full of fire - a fire that had consumed them all one by one.  Now she alone was left, a shell of grief trying to hold it all in.

She turned and made her way down the narrow stone stairway, the dull tap of her crutch the only sound.
