Can someone please tell me what it means when an owl LITERALLY fucking swims towards you and then stares you down??

That’s a fledgling great horned owl, they’re known for being generally ballsy and aggressive, and owls have been known to both climb trees and swim through still water in a pinch

Most likely full scenario: the bird was practicing flying, but it fell because it’s still a kid and they do that. It probably fell in/by the water. It then was like Oh Damn Oh Jesus and decided it was not in fact a duck and headed to shore, saw you, and was utterly offended but confused on what to do. So it decided to Square Up and face you like the hellbeast it is.

The pose it’s taking in the pic is one I affectionately call Full Orb. A fully orbed owl is 100% READY to FIGHT 1v1 no items final destination. You were probably its first up close encounter with a human, and since birds tend to associate larger animals with predators, it tried to make itself look as big as possible to make sure you know what’s up. It was staring you down because it was waiting to see you make the first move in the dual or flee in fear from its superior owl might.

can we like…. talk about what a healthy relationship with technology looks like? not just for us, but for future generations: its super easy for us to accept tech unquestioningly bc many millennials and gen-Zers grew up alongside the growth of tech, and had a naturally evolving level of exposure to it. but what about the 5 year olds with tablets? the 8 year olds with perfectly curated instagrams?? i’m as obsessed with my phone as the rest of us, but can we please stop simply bemoaning how none of us read as much as we were kids and start exploring how all these screens might be affecting the kids growing up right now?

i work in customer service and please know that i am not baby-boomer aggrandizing when i say i have seen so many children, literally toddlers, dead-silent and completely, utterly absorbed in tablets bigger than their heads. i’ve seen a shitton of pre-pubescent girls posing for pictures together, planning their angles and backgrounds, and checking what shots their mom took bc they’re worried “they might look fat.” like. i’m talking 7 year olds. this isn’t meant to be some holier than thou bullshit, this is me being legitimately terrified about a problem i really haven’t seen any of us discuss or even acknowledge

We need to bring back those crappy burner phones for kids (the ones with no touch screen and only can be used to call/text a few numbers). So they still have emergency contact and a way of talking to friends but arnt bombarded with the constant uncontrolled stream of content on the internet. And please for the love of god, no tablets for kids under 10. Nit to be all anti tech but its not even good for adults to have to much screentime its certainly not good for developing brains.

screens are proven to be really bad for kids’ brain development and social development. kids who play on tablets instead of with physical toys aren’t getting the motor skills they need from touching and manipulating toys. they aren’t getting the balance or understanding of gravity and physics that they get from playing with blocks or bouncy balls.

not to mention the blue light is real bad for their eyes. pretty soon we’re going to have a generation of kids with terrible eyesight and chronic headaches from staring at screens. 

you shouldn’t have the tv on or even have your own phone in the room with a baby under 6 months. this is because babies need eye contact to develop empathy (no, seriously) and if you’re looking at your phone, you aren’t playing with your baby. the pretty flashy lights of a phone are much more interesting to your baby than you are. 

if you think it’s too hard or annoying to engage your kid in conversation, and prefer to just hand them a tablet to keep them quiet, your kid is going to grow up having never learned to hold a conversation or to notice other humans. they’re also going to be hella impatient.
