During the early twentieth century, at a time before being “openly gay” had even entered the lexicon, artist Paul Cadmus, who was an out, gay man living in New York, posed as the subject of this painting by Luigi Lucioni.

At the time of this painting, Cadmus would have been about 24 years old. Throughout his career, Cadmus worked as an advertising artist and would become known for his paintings of the male nude. Lucioni painted captured his friend—a debonair example of a stylish man of the 1920s—employing devices inspired by Renaissance portraiture.
