Pigeon & Love

@tinysaurus-rex / tinysaurus-rex.tumblr.com

2016-2020 Rex was my lovely companion pigeon whose life was far too brief. I miss her every day and will continue advocating for pigeons in her name.

I know I already made a post about this. But ICWA is LITERALLY being challenged by a white couple that wants to adopt indigenous children to erase their culture and Christianize them. The tribe, whom has a say in who can take their children, is like "Nah, we don't want our youth Christianized like you tride last time"

And the lawyer that's helping the white couple try to overturn ICWA (so that they can erase the cultures of indigenous children) is doing it pro-bono (which means he's not charging the couple anything).

AND that lawyer is a big time lawyer whose clients are usually oil and gas industries. He's literally fighting for indigenous children to be ripped from their tribes and culture so there's less indigenous people to protest big oil destroying their sacred land.

If anyone's wondering about how they can help, I'm not sure if this will have a direct impact on this case directly but NICWA is an organization that defends Native American children. You can donate here:

I haven’t yet seen a tumblr post with these resources so I am making my own and hoping it shows up in the tags. I ASK EVERYONE WHO SEES THIS TO PLEASE REBLOG THIS.

THE INDIAN CHILD WELFARE ACT (ICWA) IS UNDER ATTACK. AND WE NEED HELP TO PROTECT IT USING THE RESOURCES BELOW.

I am not going to go into heavy detail on the bill, on its history, anything like that, the resources have a lot of information, but as a little bit of background:

It is a bill passed that forbids Native children from being adopted by non-Native families. This is for a good fucking reason, there have been historically large scoops of children taken from their Native families, at a much higher rate than white children (see the 60s scoop in Canada). These children are often abused in these homes, and their entire culture is taken from them (many end up not even knowing what tribe/nation they came from), hence the point of why they were taken in the first place (forced assimilation). Now, this does still happen through the foster care system, but this has protected in the case of adoption. It makes it that only Native families can adopt Native children.

White people hate this and have been smearing it for years (think of the whole Lexi Choctaw/Alexandria P. situation, which was so fucked how they used that little girl). Now, the state governments of Texas, Louisiana, and Indiana have taken it to the Supreme Court to be ruled unconstitutional. This case is called Haaland v. Brackeen. Because white people … really want to steal Native children. This is being heard by the court, oral arguments start WEDNESDAY. ICWA could be overturned in the matter of weeks or even days.

PLEASE USE ALL OF THESE TO PROTECT ICWA:

Petition that will involve you sending messages to your Congressional leaders through their text automated system, only available to those in the US (BUT NOTE YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A CITIZEN, OR ELIGIBLE TO VOTE TO SIGN, JUST NEED TO BE IN THE US):

Petition to send a message to President Biden and leaders at the Department of Justice, this does have a place to put in your country so seems like it may be available for those outside of the US but I am unsure (consider also donating to the Lakota People’s Law Project if you are able to):

Petition to be sent to the Attorney General and Secretary of the Department of the Interior, since it is through change.org it likely can be signed from outside of the US:

PLEASE SIGN AS MANY AS YOU ARE ABLE TO. PLEASE REBLOG IF YOU SEE THIS. PLEASE HELP US PROTECT ICWA.

a work in progress!

I’ve been wanting to draw the pigeons in my neighbourhood for a while. the colours of their flock have shifted a bit over the years - a ton used to have pure white heads, probably due to an escaped purebred who sired a bunch of kids but now I’m seeing less of those, and more white flight feathers.

I’ve finished the risograph print!

there are 100 hand-printed copies on ivory vellum, that you can grab here

You will see an uptick in high white birds in the coming generations.

Just having a normal one. Stuck in traffic with a pigeon in my car.

I was on my way to return a library book when I noticed a nice old man using a painter's tray to gently nudge a discombobulated bird out of the road, so I pulled over and offered to pick it up and take it to a wildlife rehabber.

Rehabber is closed for the day, though. So now there's a really messed up pigeon on my porch.

Hi, I dont mean to bother you but if you have any questions about pigeon care or need any help, @theramseyloft is probably one of the best experts you can talk to. They list their phone number on their blog too if you need urgent advice. They may or may not be able to even diagnose what is wrong with the bird.

Good luck and thanks for caring about pigeons!!

Thank you! I've contacted them and they have been really helpful. They are, however, in Georgia, which is several hours away from me.

Can we use the power of social media to coordinate a pigeon handoff across the south Atlantic? Send me a message with your discord tag if you're located somewhere between Maryland and Georgia and you're interested in taking a pigeon on a road trip.

You've probably already found this out but most wildlife rehabbers won't take pigeons (at least where I am) because they're not actually wild animals. I eventually just had to take the one we found to a vet. And then I had a pet pigeon for a while. So. Be prepared.

Oh, I'm aware! I used to volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation center. My local rehabbers DO take pigeons, but only to rehabilitate for release, and I have my doubts that this pidge will be a good candidate for release. I think they might have vision and flight problems, and as a potentially disabled feral domesticated animal, they would be be better off in a home.

This bird wants to live, though! They've been eating and drinking on their own, and looking less wobbly in general. The head tilt is improved, which I don't usually see happen so quickly, at least not without a lot of anti-inflammatories. As a city pigeon, this bird is also already pretty acclimated to the presence of humans. So I feel optimistic.

We have some people interested in driving them to The Ramsey Loft, but there's still a need for a Virginia and/or North Carolina driver! Please message me if you're able to join the pigeon caravan this weekend (today is 4/28/21).

Tumblr, your love for pigeons knows no bounds. I think we have enough drivers to get this gentle creature to the experts! Thank you for all the support, I will keep you updated about the journey. Fingers crossed for Friday!

Today's the day! The pigeon is leaving Maryland!

Stay tuned for the great pigeon relay!

Pigeon has been handed off in Richmond! I saw them preen and try to eat at certain points when I was stopped while driving. Goodbye and godspeed, pigeon!

Pigeon Aquired! In front of this wild little oddity shop no less. Now @spookymodernjazz and I are headed back to NC to pass this little bird of to the next person. Wish us luck!

The passenger has been passed!! Home stretch leggo!!!

~3 hours to the final destination! Pray for us lmao

They're in the home stretch!

After a very long journey, Passenger has arrived safe and sound.

They are a sad mess...

If @draconym had not taken them in, they would have died with in hours.

Guys, there is 0 muscle on this bird.

Their keel could spread butter.

They barely have the muscle to remain upright.

The eye facing the camera is blind due to head trauma.

The opposite wing was broken at the wrist who even knows how long ago.

There is a freshly scabbed laceration in their crop.

And their fecal was FILLED with Strongyloides eggs!

Y’all, this bird is so thin I can’t safely dip them for lice yet because the shock of getting wet might kill them outright...

Their depth perception is garbage, but they are eating, and the poo they pooed shows that they’ve been kept well hydrated by their rescue team.

Passenger may never recover their flight or sight in that eye, but once the worms are cleared out and they put on some weight, they should entirely recover their balance.

We’ll try some physical therapy for the bad wing once they aren’t quite so fragile.

God bless every single one of you wonderful strangers who came together because you cared enough about a pigeon to want them to have a chance to live and find a loving home.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Looking for Voiceover help!

Would anyone like to help me by contributing their voice to a project of mine? I’m building a video from the phenocam project I’ve been working on, and I’d love some audio narration from other people to help make it nice.

If you can record audio via your phone or computer and would like to help, I would love to use your voice and credit it in the video! Please fill out the survey and upload your recording if you want to participate!

Avatar

I’m assuming you need multiple people?

I do! The more people the better!

Thank you to the people who have already submitted their voices! I can’t wait to put this all together!

I still need people submit their voices, the more the better! There are about 55 lines that I want to use in this video, and it would absolutely awesome if I had enough people to fill each one of those lines! I know that’s not super likely, but even a dozen or half that number would help keep the lines interesting and unique!

If you want to participate, the lines and instructions are in the link above.

This is only a school project, but I would love it to be unique and I know your voices will help. I’m fine with any and all accents and none of these lines will be used outside this project. Oh, and everyone I use in the video will be credited for their voice work in the video itself

Hey everyone, I’m still in desperate need of voice help with this project and my deadline is now approaching. I still only have 3 submissions outside my own voice and some 58 lines total that I would like to fill with diverse voices.

If you can help, please consider doing so. All the instructions and the scripts are found on the google forms HERE

Please consider helping me out, this is only for a grad school project, but I do intend to upload this on youtube and any voice work you do for me will be credited accordingly

I would argue that the top and bottom pic are equally true. Source: one of my pigeons regularly takes a bath in the poop puddle despite having a perfectly clean bath dish, another one inflates her crop so much that she can't see where she's going and falls behind the dresser, I've been pooped on so many times and have had yet to get sick, and my pigeon recognizes that if she walks on my keyboard while I leave discord open I will see that she's typing random stuff in general and return to my room to praise her for being so adorable.

~Be a Flamingo in a flock of Pigeonsand you’ll fit right in!~

I disliked the expression ‘be a flamingo in a flock of pigeons’ as a means to encourage people to be ‘unique’ and stand out.  Personally I think it’s quite insulting to pigeons, and shows that the average person hasn’t had a proper look at a pigeon, or don’t know that fancy and exotic pigeon/dove breeds exist.  Species like the Bleeding Heart, the Victoria Crown and Jambu Fruit dove are all gorgeous and flamboyant examples of the Columbidae species, and easy challengers to the flamingo.

So I wanted to do a quick little drawing just showing off some of these lovely birds…and a smug flamingo ;)

Flint and his daughters! They each have a different mom but you can certainly tell they're related. From left to right: Loki, Luz, Flint, and Lena.

This month, Rex was supposed to be turning five, we were supposed to be celebrating another go around the sun with my starlight. She was everything to me, it is hard to find myself now, without her. It wasn't healthy though, I know that now, how much I attached myself to her was due to my mental illness. When I lost her, I didn't just lose a pet, but a coping mechanism, my routine, my identity. I'm getting help for it, but the damage is already done, so it hasn't been easy finding a proper self to continue with. I hope I get there, though.

To my friends who have been hurt over this last year, I don't know if the coming year will be kinder. I know nothing is really happening besides the numbers on the calendar, but there's always opportunity for change at any given time. Keep fighting for it. Maybe one day things will be better. On the days that you can, try to keep your head up. You don't need to all the time, it's okay to not be okay. Just don't forget that happiness won't often come on its own, you'll have to look for it. Things won't always go your way, and lately it might seem that they never go your way- but they do. Try to pick out the pieces of happiness, no matter how small they seem compared to the misery, they're there and they do matter. The more you're able to recognize the good you experience, the easier it'll be to find more of it.

Looking for a better future doesn't mean forgetting the hurt in the past. Keep going. Take care of yourself, yeah? Happy New Year's, my friends.
