@politicsofcanada have you seen this shit.

And message to all the TERF and Nazi and other miserable excuse of a human being. That blood is on your hands. I hope you all die.

For anyone who’s not aware, the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre was a mass shooting in a Montreal university, perpetrated by a man who was “fighting feminism” by murdering women engineering students. He killed 14 women and injured 14 more before killing himself.

The anniversary of the shooting is commemorated in Canada as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. It’s the kind of event that should serve as a cautionary tale forever, that should drive us to ongoing action so that nothing like it ever happens again. Clearly we’re not doing enough.

image id: the image is a tweet by erin reed @ErinInTheMorn. the tweet contains a screenshot of a news headline titled “3 people stabbed in canada university building and police say a person is detained”.

the body of the tweet says “i have been informed that a stabbing occurred today in canada. a young man entered into a gender studies class, asked what was being taught, and proceeded to go on a stabbing spree. it was a sickening action fueled by bigotry pushed by those pedaling [sic] anti-LGBTQ+ panic.” end id

I teach two courses in gender and politics at UW. The provost sent out a wholly inadequate email this morning re: the violent attack targeting people in a gender studies class.

The official message said "Many news outlets and social media sources will share information on the events of Wednesday. I want to acknowledge that many people will speculate about the motivation for this attack; We must be patient and have confidence in the judicial process."

Minimizing the nature of the problem and failing to name it is a root cause of this violence. @/UWaterloo needs to acknowledge this targeted violence and take concrete steps to change the culture and protect those teaching and taking these courses.

I have experienced threatening misogynistic behavior from a student and my department chair (at the time) completely failed to address it. The university dismisses us on a regular basis and anyone expressing shock this happened isn't paying attention.

Republicans have made SCOTUS unhealthy. It is a done deal.

Democrats changing SCOTUS is not unhealthy.

Yeah say it louder: Republicans ALREADY BROKE SCOTUS. Now, to fix it, Democrats need to use their power and popular support to UNFUCK IT. For fucks sake why is this so difficult.

hey netizens! i'm not sure how many people are aware, but youtube's been slowly rolling out a new anti-adblock policy that can't be bypassed with the usual software like uBlock Origin and Pi-Hole out of the gate

BUT, if you're a uBlock Origin user (or use an adblocker with a similar cosmetics modifier), you can add these commands in the uBlock dashboard (under My Filters) to get rid of it!

youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0) youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, []) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)

reblog to help keep the internet less annoying and to tell corporations that try shit like this to go fuck themselves <3

Friendly reminder that LGBTQ+, Queer, and LGBT+ are the preferred terms for the community (x).

Friendly reminder that Queer is approved by 72.9% of the people, and the groups who don’t prefer it’s use as an umbrella term are straight people, exclusionists, transmeds, truscums, sex-negative people, and sex work critical people (x).

Friendly reminder that aros and aces are excluded only 9.2% / 8.1% of the time respectively while being included  78.9% / 81.2% of the time (x)

Friendly reminder that exclusionists are in the minority and aro/ace people are included in the LGBTQ+ community by the people within the community.

Also, i checked out the survey the second claim sources a while back: this is not OP choosing the words truscum, exclusionist, etc. These are labels that the survey gave people the option to self-identify as. It’s self-proclaimed exclusionists who dont like the word queer, not random accusations

yeah that’s super important.

This one gets reblogged on main. The reclassification of ‘queer’ as an inexcusable slur is a recent development which stems in part from exclusionist rhetoric. We reclaimed it decades ago. Learn our history. You are not immune to TERF propaganda, but you can absolutely choose to educate yourself to spite it.

Be kind. 💜

Hey y'all,

I'm going to but the bulk of information below the cut along with cat Tax, TLDR: I'm a disabled Transgender Man who recently moved cross country to save myself from both a lifetime of abuse, and i finally see a doctor the 2nd to start the process of 8 specialist for treatment and testing. I need about 400$ usd to cover all my bills and my cats medication, and my own a month. My whole disability check pays my rent and leaves us a bit fucked in the whole, everything else Department. Please don't send me anything if you'll go without, I ain't about that. They'll be a count in the Replies so I don't clutter the dash.

I really need the sidetable off of the outside list and sign for the delivery people, but honestly anything helps.

Offerup link for all my stuff I'm selling if u'd rather buy something (shipping available)

My I get 12$ for dinner tonight? (That'll cover any fees to move it)

How much I have Vs the cost screenshots below it's 2 for one and 50% off.

the role of the person in the passenger seat is not only navigator but secretary as well. you have to type up the drivers messages to random ladies on facebook about cbd cream & google whether that billy joel song was the theme song for that show or not

you also have to provide a henchmans disdainful scowl at whoever the driver is flipping off in the target parking lot

other assorted roles may include

  • retrieval team for objects in the backseat
  • custodian of the parking garage tickets
  • "All clear my way"
  • en-route dining concierge
  • announcing "Horses!" when there are horses

Don't forget the Tommy Gun

You should never forget the Tommy Gun

Yes BUT. This specific desk is in a library so a parent that needs to use a library computer can do their work and have a little ease in managing their kiddo. In a library environment this is less productivity culture bullshit and more 'oh this is a fantastic solution to a difficult situation library staff see 8 times a day'. Is it still productivity culture bullshit because this parent may not have affordable childcare or internet available to them? Yes. Am I glad it exists in a library environment to fill a demonstrated need? Hell yeah.

and keeps library staff from having to act as babysitters...

dear GOD we could use a couple of these. we keep crayons and coloring books on hand for the ones old enough for that, but the wee ones squirming and fussing in laps while the parents are fighting with job applications or convincing gmail’s current 2-step verification to let them in so they can print off a return label (both of which i have seen)? this would be SO NICE.

library groups have been loving this & are spreading the word & actively trying to purchase/create similar things in different systems

It’s sad that it’d probably go through disability pride month because I’ve been waiting for that all year to make disability pride shit but eh. I don’t wanna be a scab.

Actually no wait nevermind why the fuck are we doing it through disability pride month??? That seems weird as fuck nevermind

Why the fuck would you make it so that you start after queer pride month, but through disability pride month??? That seems weird as fuck to me I’m sorry not sorry but it does. Like it seems weird in a way I really can’t articulate properly but i hope my rambling makes sense

Everyone keeps reblogging the tumblr blackout post as though it isn’t probably gonna be through most of, if not all of, disability pride month, which is a horrible fucking idea, so like, maybe let’s not do that? Like if someone else is able to articulate it better than me please do so, but it feels so. Weird. And a horrible idea.

tumblr wouldn't be affected with a blackout like reddit would. reddit relies on volunteers to run all of the subreddits and, basically, run the app. they can shut down their spaces (and the entire website/app) if they want to. tumblr doesn't work the same way. it would probably be more effective to give one-star reviews in the app store, stop blazing posts/buying checkmarks/etc, send asks detailing problems to official blogs like wip, etc. a blackout won't have the same effect, and, like sillyfunny is stating above, would isolate people during disability pride month.

Yep. Boycott tumblr products! Don’t buy ad free or crabs or whatever, don’t buy the merch, don’t buy dashboard checks, use an adblocker, don’t blaze posts, all of that. What they care about is MONEY, not users. So many disabled use tumblr to connect, and a blackout would hurt us more than anyone else because many of us have limited access to irl connections whether that’s due to lack of accessibility, being housebound or bedbound, being immunocompromised in an area where not enough people are vaccinated and masking, or anything else. And yeah it’s super insidious that the proposed blackout would not start until disability month, because oh no, we can’t ruin pride month!! Get a grip and support us disabled people. I’m not gonna spend a cent on tumblr but I’m not participating in this blackout. It’s not gonna work and it’s going to hurt disabled people more than it’ll hurt tumblr.

Also not boycotting something doesn't make you a scab. That's not what the word means. Do you work for Tumblr? No? Then you aren't a scab.

I hate the cosmetic surgery industry for so many reasons I really do. But the line between cosmetic and medically necessary plastic surgeries is as a cloud, and we cannot sacrifice bodily autonomy for bans so. We need to dismantle white supremacy and the patriarchy in order to effectively tackle the issue. I should be able to get elective top surgery without medicalising my transness you get?

I had a breast reduction when I was 16. I was so top heavy that my back had started spasming badly by the time I was 12, if I hadn’t been able to get my reduction, I would’ve been in more extreme pain for much longer. The relief was almost instant. Just one example of medically necessary plastic surgery, in case people aren’t sure what that looks like.

Medically necessary plastic surgery also includes removing excess skin when someone loses a lot of weight: skin folds can become infected. Burn victims’ skin grafts, those are plastic surgery too. The field covers a lot more than people think.

Harold Gillies, now considered to be the father of modern plastic surgery, developed most of his techniques (many of which are still in use today) specifically to reconstruct the faces of men who'd been injured in WW1.

Advances in weaponry meant that, for the first time, men were coming home from war with literally half their faces blown off, on a regular basis. This was not only traumatic— there were cases of men cancelling engagements or being afraid to see their families, because of their disfigurements— but also caused problems with every day tasks like speaking and eating, in which your face plays a pretty key role.

Gillies arranged for a whole ward, and later a hospital, to be dedicated to the treatment of these men, and took steps to ensure that all soldiers who received these kinds of injuries on the battlefield would be sent to him directly. He developed methods for applying skin grafts so that larger portions of the face could be repaired.

He continued his work treating wounded soldiers throughout WW1 and WW2, and when both wars were ended— just in case he hadn't done enough to establish himself as a full on hero— he was then approached by a medical student named Michael Dillon, a trans man, and was able to use the same techniques he'd developed to reconstruct the penises of wounded soldiers to give him a phalloplasty. The first one ever performed on a trans man. He even diagnosed the guy with a condition to explain the frequent operations, so as to avoid outing him.

Dillon later wrote a book about trans-ness, which inspired Roberta Cowell, who became the first British transwoman to get a vaginoplasty, also performed by Gillies.

In both cases, the techniques he developed were still being used in similar operations decades later. Gillies himself stated that he wanted no publicity for performing these operations, saying that "If it gives real happiness, that is the most that any surgeon or medicine can give.”

Hey, we could use your help...

From the GoFundMe:

Hello everyone, my name is Andrew and some of you may know me from this little cat blog my wife and I curate on Tumblr called TheCATalogues. We love cats so much that we have the great joy of having three in our little apartment in Pennsylvania, USA.

Recently our oldest had to have a mass removed from his skin, and he was the goodest boy in the whole vet cuz he got in and out with no issues during surgery. Now our boy is home with a small nasal cold which he is taking some medicine for, and recovering waiting for the stitches to come out.

If (AND ONLY IF) you are financially able, we need your help to recoup our funds for our little boy's surgery.

With visitation fees and meds and all, we were able to initially pay the $800 at the vets, but shortly after we had a couple of financial curve-balls thrown at us. Both our vehicles developed issues that need to be taken care of, and we are dependent on our cars to get to and from work. These issues mean we are definitely going to come up very short on rent and credit card payments. I'm sure you've heard all of this before as so many of us go through financial disasters, it always sucks to be blindsided like this. What's that saying: "You're just one bad event away from homelessness"?

Anyway, we don't need the full 800 thankfully, just enough to get us out of the red until our paychecks come through in a couple of weeks.

To summarize: if you can help us recoup from Neko's surgery, thank you! Even 20 bucks gets us enough gas to go to and from work for a week, so every bit will be helpful.

Be good to each other, we're all we got <3
