Why are Marvel so often in denial about stuff that doesn't work? For example, the new iterations of Thunderbolts and Nova (which don't seem to even excite the creators considering how they've gone through 3 writers each in a year). I certainly won't attribute it to you, I remember when there was fan backlash to the George Perez Giant Man redesign and it was changed to his old Goliath look within 10 issues. But it seems nowadays, Marvel are reluctant to admit they might be wrong about something?

That Giant-Man costume wasn’t changed because of any fan backlash. It was changed because neither Kurt nor I were wild about it, and the opportunity arose when Carlos began to noodle on AVENGERS FOREVER.

I would counter your first argument, though, by asking why fans can sometimes be in denial about what does work simply because it isn’t to their tastes? Not every comic is for every reader.

Avatar

I detest NINO.  And as much as Tommy-boy would like to continue denying that it's a failure, the proof is in the sale.  Out of the top 100 and falling fast.  They keep it on life support because of Loeb.

Avatar

Are we ever going to find out how Peter Quill got out of the Cancerverse after being trapped there with Thanos and Richard Rider? Also, where even is Richard?

Avatar

you will find out in guardians of the galaxy issue 18… our Original Sin tie-in.

Avatar

You can bet that Bendis will either kill Rich off for good, villain-ize him, say that he's really a time-displaced Jesse, say that Sam and Jesse are time-displaced alternate versions of Rich, or say that Rich died and the voice in NINO's helmet is Rich as the dominant personality of the Worldmind.  My money is on the Parallax treatment - brought back as a villain.  I don't like any of those clichés.  What you can be sure he won't do is bring Rich back to be Nova Prime as that's what the fans want and that would make too much sense.  But Bendis and Brevoort would see that as too much of a threat to NINO and above all else they'll keep pushing NINO.

Don't get too excited. With Bendis writing it you can be sure it won't be satisfying to Rider fans.  Some comic book cliché is inevitable.  He'll either kill Rich off for good, villain-ize him,  tell us that Jesse is really Rich or Sam and Jesse are different aspects of Rich, or that Rich died and is the voice in NINO's helmet, etc.  What he definitely won't do is bring Rich back to be Nova Prime (as that would actually make sense and is what the fans want) but would be too much of a threat to NINO (and above all else, Marvel insists on pushing NINO).

Hi. I had to look up the term "NINO" and realized that it seems just one guy who even uses it. Why spend so much time with somebody who seems to be a little bit misguided?

We’re pretty much done with that around these parts now.

Avatar

Wrong as usual.  If you bothered to check, there are in the neighborhood of a thousand likes on facebook for most anti-NINO articles.  That means there's a whole lot of people out there who don't like NINO. Falling sales proves it.  If people like Brevoort, Dandan, and the author of this post would get their heads out of their asses, they'd know this fact.

I saw your impressive book collection on Twitter. Lately I'm starting to realize that I'm barely going back and reading things in my own growing collection, how often do you find yourself pulling a book out and re-reading stuff?

Avatar

More often than you might think.

Avatar

What an absolute ass kisser is dandan.  Between your obsessive self-love and your obsessive love for Brevoort, how do you function on a daily basis?  I guess you can only tear yourself away from getting off in front of a mirror to fluff your man-crush, Brevoort.

I am 35 years old. My son is 4 years old. We have been comic book fans for most of our lives. We would like to say that NOVA is a must read. As a side note, we absolutely loved Bill on an adventure with Sam. Thank you. - Julio and Wolf

That’s lovely, thank you!

NINO is for 4 year old minds.  So of course they like it.

I think that's a BS excuse you guys use about not knowing sales. How come they are always right when it comes to cancellation time? NINO is going to be out of the top 100. No denying that. -Matt

Avatar

You’re such an industry genius, let me flip this around on you: if things were as you say, and the current NOVA book isn’t profitable, then why in the world would be be continuing with it? We’re not running a charity.

You desperately want the world to be the way you want it to be, but no matter how much you rail about this, you cannot get past the fact that this entire endless jihad you are on is about the fact that a comic book that you liked went away and another comic book that you don’t like came out.

Seriously, surely there is a better use, any better use, for your time than this.

What do you think you are accomplishing here? Do you look at the responses of your fellow fans whenever I answer one of your pointed questions about this stuff? If you’re trying to recruit followers, this really isn’t working.

I get that you’re unhappy about the state of things, and I’m sorry that you feel that way—but we are where we are. And maybe the day will come when the current NOVA series runs its course—every NOVA book before this one has. But that certainly doesn’t mean that we’re going to immediately turn around and resume the previous series where it left off, done by the creators you want and with the ethos you like. In fact, the historical odds of that happening at all are pretty dire.

I like your passion. I just wish that it was focused more constructively.

Avatar

Hey dandanetc - you're such a pathetic little bitch. F you and your self-righteous indignation and your self-satisfied (and totally un-earned) sense of superiority.  I'm sure you look up with adoration in your eyes while you're fluffing Brevoort for free.  Hell - you probably pay him to be his fluffer.  Loser.

So why continue to push NINO when it isn't doing better than Richard Rider? From a business perspective that makes no sense (and cents). Who's behind these decisions? -Matt

Avatar

Sing the chorus with me again, boys and girls: “You do not have accurate information about our sales!”

Avatar

Because Ian - as soon as a Rider Nova book came out, half NINO's audience would stop buying NINO and start buying Rider - then NINO, Loeb's pet vanity/tribute project, would fail.

Mark Waid writes one hell of a Kid Nova. That was the most compelling I've seen the character and while I know Mark is a really busy guy, I think you should try to find a way for him to work with Sam (who is absolutely one of your best outreach characters to the younger crowd) more. (Of course, that's, as you always say, only if Mark WANTS to work with him more.)

Avatar

Glad you enjoyed it!

And now that I’ve printed this, set your stopwatches for the appearance of the Anti-NINO crowd with their review. (I’m guessing that they didn’t like it, and will say that in great detail!)

Avatar

dandandanetc.  Your narcissism is evident by the obvious love of seeing your own name written numerous times; so don't pretend you know nothing about masturbating while typing.  You'd be the expert on the self-love of masturbation since you're so pathetic that you could never get a girl to actually do anything for you.  GFY loser.  I know you will.

I understand your explanation of why big-name creators are more likely to work on big-name books, but isn't Guardians Of The Galaxy a good counterargument? That wasn't an A-list title, but Marvel clearly wanted it to be (presumably because of the movie), & I'm sure Bendis's involvement was partially an attempt to bump Guardians up to the big leagues. And it worked pretty well! Why not do that more often, using big-name creators to boost interest in B-list creators (and hope that interest lasts)?

You’re acting a little bit as though this happened in a vacuum.

Taking absolutely nothing away from Brian and Steve and Sara and everybody who worked on the series, the other big draw for GUARDIANS was that there was a movie on the horizon, one that was beginning to be promoted. That created interest in the property regardless of who was working on it. So in tandem, this all led to a top-selling series—but while you could manufacture some of it potentially with another property (assuming that you could convince creators like Brian or Steve or Sara to work on it), you wouldn’t have the driving interest in the film to help bring people to the series.

Avatar

So basically you're admitting that because of the movie the series is a high seller and Bendis' involvement is incidental.  So why replace the BETTER writers who actually created the property that inspired the movie in favor of Bendis who just turns the property into Avengers-lite and a running joke?  Put Quesada back in charge.  He made better decisions than you and Alonso.

In this week issue of Nova, Sam's teacher says that he thinks that its "possible" aliens might exist but he "doesn't see any evidence of regular visitations". Earth gets invaded by aliens every single friggin year in a very public way, the government and media openly talk about the existince of aliens, it's how Norman Osborn got named top cop. How can any educated person in the MU possibly think something like that? I can understand people in the MU not believing in magic, but this is dumb.

To some degree, this is a storytelling conceit.

The Marvel Universe is meant to be the real world, our world, and to reflect it as much as possible.

In our world, whether aliens exist or not, they are generally not believed in.

Once you get to the point where everybody in the Marvel Universe believes in things like aliens, the whole landscape of the world begins to change in ways that make it into something very different from our world.

We don’t really want that to happen.

And given that there are moon landing deniers and such in the real world, this isn’t too much of a stretch.

Avatar

Just another stupid explanation to defend this intelligence insulting series.  So this teacher just slept through Bendis' Secret Invasion? Yeah - it was pretty forgettable come to think of it.  Not like we'd seen it before in just about every alien invasion movie Bendis ripped off.  Hope all you zombies who keep supporting this child-oriented crap are happy that you've helped Brevoort, Alonso, Loeb, and Duggan run cosmic into the ground.

looking forward to slotts upcioming silver surfer and i know hes gonna want to do his thing for a while to get things started but are there any plans for a maybe a little more cohesion in regards to some of the cosmic books,

Avatar

Well, there really aren’t all that many of what you’d call “cosmic” books at the moment, and it seems like there’s plenty enough cohesion between them to me. But part of that is that I feel like, in the past, we’ve “ghetto-ized” titles such as these by separating them from the Marvel Universe as a whole. So we’re keeping these titles cohesive with the MU instead—as witnessed by the GUARDIANS/ALL-NEW X-MEN crossover, and Nova being a big part of ORIGINAL SIN #0.

Avatar

On the Gunn, Feige, & Pratt interview I heard well-deserved praise of DnA's work on cosmic and GotG; but not a word of praise for Bendis & Loeb. Silence says everything about Bendis' & Loeb's creatively bankrupt attempt to undo all that DnA created and replace it with puerile, hackneyed, tripe aimed at the lowest common denominator of comic book reader. Cosmic was of higher quality when it was "Ghetto-ized" away from the main MU. Do cosmic a favor and recuse yourself from further involvement. Take Alonso, Bendis, Loeb, and Wacker with you.

Being an Old Comics Fan, I read the original Guardians of the Galaxy adventures, as well as Jim Valentino's run from the pre-Image 90s. So I'll be honest - I don't know these new folks from Adam, and I don't mean Warlock. Based solely on the trailer, I'm willing to make the investment - how far back should I go to get a solid run-up to the characters? Back to vol. 2 of the series, or just the current one, or what?

Avatar

I think your easiest starting point would be the first volume of the current Bendis/McNiven series, which should give you easy access. But there are a bunch of hardcore GUARDIANS fans who’ll swarm me if I don’t tell you to go further back and start with the earlier Abnett & Lanning material.

I think the Bendis stuff is going to be easier for somebody to jump right into, but that’s also a question of taste.

Avatar

Of course Brevoort would push the Bendis trash (aka GotGINO). It's Brevoort and Alonso's fault GotGINO even exists.  They wanted to dumb down the concepts to attract Avengers-zombies. Start with the DnA Volume II run.  Then read Bendis' run and you'll see why anyone who has ever read Volume II (and also has discerning taste and a mentality above that of the average 8-year-old) is thoroughly disgusted by the mediocrity of Bendis' completely pedestrian take on the concept.

You get a LOT of grief over GotG and Nova. And I just gotta say, I freaking love both books. I'm a huge fan of the DNA stuff, but Bendis' stuff is KILLER! I love all the things he's "getting to" and all the hints and almost-reveals, only to yank it back and lot even mention it again for several issues. It's driving me crazy, in a really awesome way. To everyone involved in both series, THANK YOU!

Glad you’re digging them, thanks!

There's a certain nice symmetry to the universe when a seeker of mediocrity finds the mediocrity sought.  I'm sure Lokeinlyesmith and NINO/GotGINO will be very happy together.

Avatar

It’s really good. And I say that as somebody who never had a strong attachment to Ghost Rider as a character or a concept.

(So that said, I can see where long-time Ghost Rider fans might be taken aback that it’s such a departure from what has gone before. Hopefully, we can avoid the intellectual bankruptcy of calling it GRiNO or something.)

Avatar

Ironic that Brevoort would refer to anyone or anything else as intellectually bankrupt.

I don't know if you're looking for feedback, but your Formspring Tumblr becomes 10x more fascinating when you're responding to the thoughtful, interesting questions, rather than enabling the rage of the NINO-types. I've always enjoyed your insight and its been really rich lately. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. I answer the questions I get, though—and I need to have both the time and the focus to answer a more complex question, whereas a simple one I can dash off a response to. So the time-factor is a genuine thing in that regard.

Tom, I'm honestly trying to give Sam Alexander a fair shake here. That said, given what we've read thus far the plot has been uninspiring, hackneyed and juvenile. I can't help but think that this book could have been called "Spacekid" and not missed a beat. What exactly was the point of switching the characters again?

Sorry you don’t care for it.

Spacekid is a perfect alternate name for NINO since the little idiot isn't worthy of and is a disgrace to the title and uniform he's usurped.

>To all the self-righteous types who have commented about how “above it all” they are about this issue, let me quote a recent statement by another fan:

"Would you want Captain America, Batman, or James Bond to be replaced by a young upstart who has none of their virtues? Let me re-phrase: do you...

First off - let me correct all of your distortions.  There is no "entitlement" theme here.  That's a concept YOU are shoe-horning into this debate - and - like a politician - you're using the word in a manner intended to stir up all the conditioned resentment all the "dittoheads" have about the word causing them to react in "knee-jerk" fashion and post nasty comments in this section in support of you.  I am a CUSTOMER registering a COMPLAINT about you replacing a SUPERIOR PRODUCT with an INFERIOR PRODUCT.  And we both know that you did it to appeal to the lowest common denominator in order to increase sales. And we both know that that strategy is not working.  You've gotten the point across loud and clear that you're not going to change it so there's no expectation that you will; and I don't think anybody believes that they're "entitled" to any particular form of entertainment. If you want the dollars of the Rider fans you'll correct it and if you don't you won't.  As to what I think I'm doing - I'm organizing all who feel the same way I do to try to get the point across to you because you are more intent on defending your position and getting the applause of a few dittoheads than hearing your customers.  Since dollars are the only thing that count - if we withhold our dollars, maybe you'll get the point.  BTW - as a business owner, I'd have to call what you're doing bad business practice.

As to the link - I don't know what fan-produced Starblazers content has to do with the point I was making. Nor do I think original Japanese anime concepts have anything to do with the point.  Neither are the "Starblazers" under discussion here. We all know the original Japanese content was "Americanized" before broadcast in the US and differs in major ways from the original Japanese ideas.  Of course that doesn't bother you.   I asked how you would feel if Derek Wildstar or Captain Avatar were suddenly replaced with a 14-year-old "idiot" child for newly produced material officially identified as a "Starblazers" reboot. You avoided answering the question.  Saying it wouldn't affect your enjoyment of the original material is just dodging the question.

Your points about Cap, Batman, and Bond are totally disingenuous. Nobody ever seriously believed that Steve Rogers or Bruce Wayne or Peter Parker would never be back - they're A-listers with movies to support them after all. And your point about James Bond is just laughable. Different actors portraying James Bond isn't the same as James Bond being replaced by another agent - especially an "idiot" child.  The point is that none of them have been permanently REPLACED by an "idiot" child (aka an inferior product). And you've made it clear in your posts on this very site that NINO is a REPLACEMENT.  Your dittoheads can scroll back and see for themselves in the highly doubtful possibility that they're actually capable of independent critical thinking.

Your final part about Rider is the most disingenuous of all.  Us Rider fans liked the change/upgrade to the more powerful leadership status. We liked the presence of a Corps of supporting characters. We liked the cosmic non-Earthbound storylines.  We're complaining about you REGRESSING, BASTARDIZING, and otherwise DUMBING-DOWN the concepts. We're complaining about you replacing our favorite character with an annoying "idiot" child.  Do you and all your dittoheads get it now?

And to all the dittoheads, I have one message for you all:  GFY!

Avatar

Once again NINO proves to be a disgrace to the Nova uniform and the Nova Corps. He makes light of the deaths of true Corpsmen – something a true soldier would never do. He is easily bested by a lame bounty hunter. He is easily fooled by a pirate/slaver into saving the pirate/slaver from...

Hey sv4me - since you obviously have attention maintenance and/or reading comprehension problems - here's a short message just for you minimizing any effort on your part and dumbing down language to text level so your minimally functioning brain can understand:  GFY!  And save your "above it all" attitude for the zombies who care.

And to Brevoort:  How did you ever become an editor?  Your use of every comma in your reply was incorrect and I've frequently observed you improperly substitute "their" for "they're" and "your" for "you're."  Brushing up on proper English is advised.  Of course, once again you refuse to enter into any debate and just let the zombies do your dirty work.  That's right. I don't enjoy inferior products like NINO and it's incorrect to say that Rider is given a free pass.  Rider was never truant, never made light of the death of comrades, and was never disrespectful to teachers.  He was also duly inducted into the Corps initially via emergency deputization by an officer of the Corps and later formally.  Get your Nova history straight before you mouth off.
