So it can't get lost in reblog tags:

This article pulls zero punches. Incomplete list of potential triggers: miscarriage, medical neglect, loss of fertility, infant death, vomit, maternal trauma, mention of genetic and birth defects, and forced pregnancy.

The women named in this article have suffered, terribly, unnecessarily, because state law makers meddled in matters they didn't understand.

article published July 21, 2023

Exactly whose life is improved by women being forced to carry to term a baby that everyone knows will die shortly after birth?

OTW Candidate Audrey Richards

Alright, it looks like the shit's about to hit the fan. The full names for OTW Board Candidates have been released, and it looks like Audrey Richards recently ran for political office as a Republican. Source: https://ballotpedia.org/Audrey_Richards

Based on what happened last year with Tiffany G, I want to make something clear: This is not a plot by the Republican party to destroy AO3.

Audrey Richards is an OTW volunteer in good standing. She wouldn't be able to run if she wasn't.

Also, if the Republican Party wanted to destroy AO3, they'd have Tucker Carlson or whoever put the site on blast and whip up the Conservative hate machine against the site. That hasn't happened because I don't believe that the drivers of the Republican Party are aware that the site exists.

What's happening here is that in the Republican Party, Audrey is small fry enough that affiliation with AO3 hasn't become a career liability for her. But, seriously, given how fascist the Republican Party is these days, I would not advise anyone who loves the site to be affiliated with the U.S.'s Republican Party. That's peak Voting for the Leopards Eating Faces Party behavior!

Okay, with all that said, even before this came out, Audrey Richards wasn't impressing me as a candidate. You can read her Q&As here: https://elections.transformativeworks.org/category/2023-en/2023-candidates/2023-audrey-r/

She answers variations of I Don't Know to a LOT of questions (which none of the other candidates do) and has some definite clunkers of answers. I won't be voting for her, but that was already the case based upon her answers.

OTW Board Elections Inflitration 2: Electric Boogaloo. Coming August 11th-14th.

Don't forget to make sure your membership is up to date so you can vote. She's already lost one election, so Tumblr, let's make it two.

Don't let someone who would vote to criminalize your existance onto our Board. Take your "think of the children" scare tactics somewhere else, Audrey.

Update: She is no longer a candidate and had this to say about it.

Nice to see she uses the same language as 45 and is about as gracious in defeat.

Just a heads up to everyone: once there's an official announcement from the OTW about her resigning as a candidate, I'm going to go ahead and turn off reblogs on this post, since it'll be no longer necessary.

oh no, the consequence of her own actions! who ever would have thought that advocating for censorship might not go over well on the anti-censorship platform

Serious Question: Where does she advocate for censorship? I've read through all of the Q&As posted so far, and I don't recall her saying anything like that.

Don't get me wrong, many of her answers were each straight up garbage or an affected ignorance that would make Sergent Schultz proud, but I don't recall anything about censorship, actually. Did I miss something?

Barbie movie never said "we need to stop men" it said "we need to stop toxic masculinity" and if that made you feel called out I got some news for you

The Animation Guild Announces Unionization Efforts At Warner Bros. And Cartoon Network

"Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network production workers are attempting to unionize with The Animation Guild (TAG).

A petition was filed with the National Labor Relations Board today requesting a union election. The petition includes 66 staffers at Warner Bros. Animation and 22 at Cartoon Network, including roles like production manager, digital production assistant, IT technician, production coordinator, production assistant, design production coordinator, assistant production manager and senior assistant production manager.

They are involved in such Warner Bros. projects as Batman: The Caped CrusaderHarley Quinn and Teen Titans Go! and Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time: Fionna and CakeWe Baby Bears and Craig of the Creek.

The workers also requested voluntary recognition from management at the Warner Bros. Discovery subsidiaries.

A tweet was issued confirming the move, which was officially announced earlier on a joint Zoom call.

“Although many might not think it, production is a specialized skill; we might not be artists or writers, but what we bring to the table goes beyond traditional creativity and gets content on the air,” Warner Bros. Animation production manager Hannah Ferenc said in a statement about the organization effort. “Having lived through the existing state of the animation industry for the past seven years, I want to make sure that not only our current workers, but all those who choose to join us in the future, can feel secure in following their passion by earning livable wages and being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

The Animation Guild has already established bargaining units on shows like Rick and MortySolar Opposites, The SimpsonsFamily Guy and American Dad!  It also is active at studios like Titmouse New York and L.A. and ShadowMachine. Establishment at Walt Disney Animation Studios is currently in progress."

Anonymous asked:

Have you heard of the sooty owl? They are frightening and their eyes are probably hell portals.

i DID actually while i was looking up owls a while back oh MAN they have incredible faces, like some kinda confused ghost who ended up in a bird and now just has to live with it

looks like they come in lesser and greater sooty flavors, and theyre both pretty similar except for their sizes (about 43 cm for the greater, 37 for the lesser)

theyre like someone took a barn owl and just lowered the brightness, threw some speckles in there, made their eyes a direct portal to the infinite nightmarish abyss, called it a day

the YOUNG SOOTY OWLS on the other hand dont even look like real animals. they look like someone made a dodo out of felt and accidentally left it in a dryer. owls are great

"A team of researchers at Washington University in St. Louis has developed a real-time air monitor that can detect any of the SARS-CoV-2 virus variants that are present in a room in about 5 minutes.

The proof-of-concept device was created by researchers from the McKelvey School of Engineering and the School of Medicine at Washington University...

The results are contained in a July 10 publication in Nature Communications that provides details about how the technology works.

The device holds promise as a breakthrough that - when commercially available - could be used in hospitals and health care facilities, schools, congregate living quarters, and other public places to help detect not only the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but other respiratory virus aerosol such as influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as well.

“There is nothing at the moment that tells us how safe a room is,” Cirrito said, in the university’s news release. “If you are in a room with 100 people, you don’t want to find out five days later whether you could be sick or not. The idea with this device is that you can know essentially in real time, or every 5 minutes, if there is a live virus in the air.

How It Works

The team combined expertise in biosensing with knowhow in designing instruments that measure the toxicity of air. The resulting device is an air sampler that operates based on what’s called “wet cyclone technology.” Air is sucked into the sampler at very high speeds and is then mixed centrifugally with a fluid containing a nanobody that recognizes the spike protein from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. That fluid, which lines the walls of the sampler, creates a surface vortex that traps the virus aerosols. The wet cyclone sampler has a pump that collects the fluid and sends it to the biosensor for detection of the virus using electrochemistry.

The success of the instrument is linked to the extremely high velocity it generates - the monitor has a flow rate of about 1,000 liters per minute - allowing it to sample a much larger volume of air over a 5-minute collection period than what is possible with currently available commercial samplers. It’s also compact - about one foot wide and 10 inches tall - and lights up when a virus is detected, alerting users to increase airflow or circulation in the room.

Testing the Monitor

To test the monitor, the team placed it in the apartments of two Covid-positive patients. The real-time air samples from the bedrooms were then compared with air samples collected from a virus-free control room. The device detected the RNA of the virus in the air samples from the bedrooms but did not detect any in the control air samples.

In laboratory experiments that aerosolized SARS-CoV-2 into a room-sized chamber, the wet cyclone and biosensor were able to detect varying levels of airborne virus concentrations after only a few minutes of sampling, according to the study.

“We are starting with SARS-CoV-2, but there are plans to also measure influenza, RSV, rhinovirus and other top pathogens that routinely infect people,” Cirrito said. “In a hospital setting, the monitor could be used to measure for staph or strep, which cause all kinds of complications for patients. This could really have a major impact on people’s health.”

The Washington University team is now working to commercialize the air quality monitor."

Holy shit. I know it's still early in the technology and more testing will inevitably be needed but holy shit.

Literally, if it bears out, this could revolutionize medicine. And maybe let immunocompromised people fucking go places again

Also, for those who don't know, Nature Communications is a very prestigious scientific journal that focuses on Pretty Big Deal research. Their review process is incredibly rigorous. This is an absolutely HUGE credibility boost to this research and prototyp

I slept in and just woke up, so here's what I've been able to figure out while sipping coffee:

  • Twitter has officially rebranded to X just a day or two after the move was announced.
  • The official branding is that a tweet is now called "an X", for which there are too many jokes to make.
  • The official account is still @twitter because someone else owns @X and they didn't reclaim the username first.
  • The logo is 𝕏 which is the Unicode character Unicode U+1D54F so the logo cannot be copyrighted and it is highly likely that it cannot be protected as a trademark.
  • Outside the visual logo, the trademark for the use of the name "X" in social media is held by Meta/Facebook, while the trademark for "X" in finance/commerce is owned by Microsoft.
  • The rebranding has been stopped in Japan as the term "X Japan" is trademarked by the band X JAPAN.
  • Elon had workers taking down the "Twitter" name from the side of the building. He did not have any permits to do this. The building owner called the cops who stopped the crew midway through so the sign just says "er".
  • He still plans to call his streaming and media hosting branch of the company as "Xvideo". Nobody tell him.

This man wants you to give him control over all of your financial information.

seriously have been thinking about this all night long. call me autistic but the fact that 90% of workplaces the point is not to get your work done and then be done doing it but to instead perform an elaborate social dance in which you find something to do even when you're done doing everything you need to do in order to show your fellow workers that you, too, are Working . because you are at Work . disgusting why cant we all agree that if there is no work immediately to be done. we just dont do anything

this post has blown up to the point where some of the folks in the notes are starting to think it's about exclusively office jobs (it's not; had the same problem when i worked in a busy deli - when we reached a rare lull and had cleaned up the counter from the rush we weren't allowed to relax or sit for five minutes (this is why food service workers go in the walk-in: sometimes you're the only one in there and you can sit down)) and i also just want to say slacking off at work will NEVER be a no from me. even if a coworker is a little slow during a rush and it's bothering me i will never get on them about it because i know that person who's moseying and relaxing isn't ever gonna rat on me to a boss type if i happen to do the same . we will never achieve comfortable working environments unless we allow one another to goof off and chill out! anway stream david graeber bullshit jobs

I love it when people take fic writing seriously. I love when it's not 'Here's this dumb thing I wrote' and instead it's 'Here's this thing I put blood, sweat and tears into. Here's this thing I slaved away at, trying new writing techniques and editing over and over. Here's this dialogue that kept me awake at night. Here's this beautiful turn of phrase I thought up. Here's this thing that I wrote with vulnerability and heart, and I am proud to share it with you.'
