Reminder for tumblr newbies: tags on reblogs are for your own purposes or just a space for commentary. only tags on new posts are actually searchable or will show up on followed tags

Wait, really? Then what's the point of people tagging "boost" on reblogs they want to get more eyeballs on.

good question! #signal boost tells their followers that this is something they want spread. Their followers can then decide to pass it along themselves. You'll see it most often on charity posts e.g. "hi I need money to pay a hospital bill pls boost this" and then subsequent rebloggers tag "signal boost"

This tag along with #timezone reblog and other similar ones are also often on self-reblogs bc op wants their content to get as much exposure as possible among their followers. Those tags also do nothing except self-deprecatingly explain "yes, this might be your 2nd time seeing this today and I'm doing it on purpose." If followers are inclined they can take that hint and pass op's content along.

Tumblr is powered by users relying on each other to spread stuff around. That's why so many posts discourage newbies from sticking to the outside habit of only "liking" things. You gotta pass posts along by reblogging, and asking others to boost a special post is just part of that system.

Mild addition - tags are *also* so that people can go through your archive and search for stuff. My tags are horrendous, but technically you can still click through #characters from the archive page and find all posts relating to writing characters. Same for #dialogue, etc.

I am a horrible gremlin who never almost uses tags on my personal blog, but if you're running a fandom blog, post your own writing snippets, or generally want to track certain kinds of posts, tags will help you and others find those posts in your archive. Just in case anyone wants to look through your blog to find... Stuff.

i feel like no one really talks about the loneliness of writing original fiction. sharing your work is hard. believing that people like it is so hard. explaining yourself to people who don’t write feels messy and the mild exasperation when you say you’re working on something new (again? another one) like you’re inconveniencing them by sharing, even if they don’t feel that way, like you have to beg people to love this world that you create and the fear that they don’t or the fear that they are pretending, that they are putting up with your writing talk.

to be creative is to be chaotic and confusing and obsessed, and sometimes it feels like too much, too often, too all-encompassing. i don’t know how to be less.

i wrote this post in july of 2020 and i would love to go back and give past me a little kiss on the forehead. it’s going to be okay. you find your cheerleading squad and better readers than you could dream of. you’re not shouting into the void anymore. the people you see in your day to day life are very interested in you and your career and what you’re working on. you no longer live with the person who makes your creativity feel like a character flaw. you get to sit on your couch and watch your friends react to your stories in real time (and scream and chuck things at you).

also, you get an agent and a book deal. nobody asks you to be less.

Do yourself a favor and just write everything out of order. That's legit what's stopping me from updating my WIPs because the back of my head is demanding it has to be consecutively written in order or else it won't make sense.

....which is kind of dumb because when I came up with the plotlines they were from scenes right in the middle lol
