Diversity in the Theaters
Marvel just announced that they are producing the first Asian led Superhero movie. The movie will be based on The Master of Kung-Fu Shang Chi
This comes on the heels of DC announcing they are producing the first ever latino superhero movie featuring Jaime Reyes as Blue Beetle
It’s not a surprise that studios are looking to diversify their movies. The success of Wonder Woman and Black Panther confirmed that their is a vast audience willing and ready to embrace diverse led roles. Wonder Woman grossed over $821 Million worldwide, on a budget of $120-$150 Million while Black Panther grossed $1.347 Billion on a budget of $200-$210 Million.
Their success opened doors for more diversity in comic book firms; as Miles Morales will make his big screen debut on Dec 14, the female led Captain Marvel will be hitting theaters March 8, and Jaime Foxx has signed on to reboot the Spawn franchise
A Wonder Woman 1984 sequel is currently in production and Marvel is planning a Black Panther sequel.
Rumored projects include Cyborg from DC and Nightwatch from Sony
Which characters would you like to see on the big screen?
I personally would like to see a Green Lantern Corps film. Give me Jessica, John, Simon and Kyle in a fun space buddy police film. It could be DC’s answer to GotG.
With so many wonderfully rich comic book characters, the possibilities are endless.
