the respective fanon and canon renditions of scourge and sol are literally the polar opposites of each other

like… let me try to explain

the fandom portrays sol as some young satan/mark twain’s mysterious stranger adjacent wayfaring entity of unknowable origin and intent who carelessly manipulates the world around him with ease and is just so so untouchable and above the clans and their tiny, pitiful religion that everyone is unavoidably doomed to fall victim to his suave charm and chilling intellect. in the books he’s this dude who just desperately wants to be accepted but unfortunately has no talent whatsoever, all of his attempts to prove himself usually out him as a fraud and end up putting everyone he’s attempting to ingratiate himself with in danger, he literally throws a temper tantrum stomping his widdle feet and all when leafstar kicks him out and will relay his tragic backstory even when no one asked (seriously he does this with both leafstar and hollyleaf). he’s the type of character who could only get so far as a villain by virtue of being in a poorly written book series because there’s absolutely no reason as to why the clans would trust him. i don’t care how disillusioned with starclan blackstar apparently was i don’t care that you think he thought sol was hot there is absolutely no well written explanation for why one of the most hardened and anti-outsider leaders at the time would suddenly put full faith in the ravings of some rando loner and then let him take over the clan. him being able to predict the eclipse isn’t because of any supernatural foresight it was just something he was informed of by a higher entity. he’s a sad little con man who wants to destroy everything he can’t have and inadvertently molded himself into the exact failure his mother told him he was be in doing so

scourge is for some reason reduced to generic edgy chaos loving dumpster lord who is obsessed with murdering people for fun and does a kooky evil smile whenever he rips someone open, and the only reason he kills people is because he’s mad about his siblings being mean to him or something. in the books he only kills three characters on screen, and literally his defining trait is that, as well as being of unassuming physique, he’s always disquietingly calm. he discusses the potential uprooting of the clans like it’s a mundane business venture, and allows firestar to make his own argument about tigerstar’s trustworthiness, afterwards responding to what he’s been told with genuine consideration and composure. he is perhaps the only villain in the series who did not set out with intentions of cultivating a following for power and did not need to deceive or impose himself on others in order to do so; bloodclan banded together willingly because of the protection and sense of community he provided them. tigerstar is the only clan cat he has any personal vendetta against, otherwise he only wanted to remove the clans because they had access to resources that would provide a better quality of life for him and his followers in comparison to the desperate, diseased conditions of the twolegplace

you see what i’m getting at right? it’s canon pathetic vs canon badass but the fandom reversed it for some reason. and i don’t say this often but maybe canon actually had a better thing going in this case

You’re so fucking right like. I’ve never liked sol that much because of the fandom portrayal of him as some sort of badass when his motivations surround how pathetic he is, he’s kicked out of skyclan because he had to manufacture a situation in which he was a hero to save his dumb ass from the consequences of his own actions. Sol is a con man if anything, he’s weasely and has no problem in cheating and lying if it gets him what he wants, his entire motivation to destroy the clans is essentially “I made an idiot out of myself, got my chances ruined, but it’s still not my fault somehow it’s THEIR fault for calling me out”, he’s comparable to like, syndrome from incredibles as just a vindictive manchild who cannot let go of something that was his fault because he’s never able to look outside of how bad it made him feel. On the outside sol might appear mysterious and powerful but it’s an act that is easily destroyed.

And scourge was also semi ruined by this for me because the image in my own head was different. Scourge always read as someone who started his journey fueled by vengeance and then completely lost focus due to what he had to do to get there. The description of ice in his veins describes how he becomes detached from his actions and eventually how that detachment stretches across everything he does as the ice does not leave him. His motives start as simple but it feels as if he barely recalls them until they are in front of him, that if he’d gone his whole life without seeing tigerstar again he wouldn’t have cared, but it was chance and a chance he fully took advantage of. Even when he does get back at socks and ruby it’s stated that it doesn’t do anything for him emotionally, that he thought it would, but he doesn’t feel anything about it one way or another, and at that point I think it’s just subtly noted that scourge has no reason to want revenge if it has no gain for him, that’s why he kills tigerstar - not out of vengeance (at least not purely), but out of necessity since he’d threatened his power and attempted to command the cats under his control. Scourge had basically through a personal vendetta at a young age had his entire life altered to a point where his original motives aren’t the concern, he’s completely twisted up by his own desire for revenge that it changes him forever, he becomes completely unrecognizable. The thing is too I think he does essentially live up to his own legend which started as a lie, but eventually he surpasses, which is a ridiculous example as to how intimidating he is as a villain, he eventually outshined the tall tales he told about himself. And it’s a shame we don’t get more of him because he’s one of our better villains with his setup and personality, this calculated, tactical creature with no real qualms about what he has to do to get something done.

Also need to add that I almost did that smudge design too but I’ve decided that I should actually just wait on it a bit because I want to base his design off my real cat, Manuel who is just as anxiety ridden. And chonky. But the temptation was strong since my manny does also resemble a capuchin monkey-

Skyheart in Crookedstar’s Promise: a kind adoptive sister to Leopardstar who even delays her apprentice ceremony so they can spend more time together, laying a foundation for Leopardstar’s deep love of her siblings and family in RiverClan even after her mother’s death, which also backed up the story that Leopardstar was spoiled by her clanmates.

Skyheart in Leopardstar’s Honor: a bully who never liked Leopardstar. Literally nearly drowns her. Adds to narrative Leopardstar was a complete outcast in the same book she is forcibly given a love interest, her feelings for Tigerstar are confirmed, and she regrets being leader because she couldn’t be with her love interest.

Yeah I think I know which Skyheart I prefer.

Doesn’t even make sense regarding Leopardstar as character, it would make more sense with the first characterization of the sisters that her strong foundation in concepts of loyalty and family could develop further flaws in her character when regarding those outside of RiverClan. It just doesn’t make as much sense with how it’s presented the other way

I’m appalled that this is still a problem within the community. I’m honestly extremely sorry for those hard of hearing or deaf who has to deal or view bad faith dehumanizing arguments that attempt to speak over your own voices. I empathize with that immensely and it’s genuinely upsetting that people lack that empathy and willingness to learn about other people.

Clarification, the video in question is actually noting of the flaws existent with snowkit, including the fact that he was made to be killed off and that his treatment is extremely poor in writing and canon and his death itself is questionable. I’d say that I’ve heard similar arguments used by the communities in question and were presented respectfully and also noted how irl cats who are deaf can hunt fine. The community reaction in the comments seems to be either completely unaware of the conversation at large and the implications of this character and his characterization or even playing devils advocate.

On moonkittis part I think they attempted to speak on the problems with a level of care and an emphasis that the issue overall is not only the fact that snowkit died, but the overall attitudes directed at him by other characters, the complete stripping of any personality he could’ve been given in order to emphasize his inability to hear others and how through dialogue he is not even acknowledged as being in the same room as the characters when they speak of him, and his death largely just being a tool for story progression, hell, his entire life being a tool for story progression. It’s a good video, the critique on my part would be that maybe moonkitti should’ve gotten testimony from fans who are deaf or HoH (hard of hearing) and given their opinions a larger platform, but that being said on their end the intentions seem to be in the right place, but the outcome honestly made me lose a large chunk of fate in others regarding comments.

I’m not HoH or deaf, but I’m disabled. It hurts to see other people being dismissed or seen as lesser than over something they have no control over and that does not impair their ability to live and love and communicate with others. It hurts to see people use concepts they do not fully comprehend, like nature and evolution to claim that naturally, disability will always end in tragedy. It hurts to be spoken over by somebody who hasn’t lived a day in your shoes or understand the complexities of your problem the way you do. I’ll never know what you experience, but I know it’s not easy and that people lack empathy regarding struggles foreign to them. We’re not baggage, we’re people.

i still think it's a wee bit funny that some of the responses to hawkleaf was that "it wouldn't be healthy" as if people pairing up the dude who thinks murder will earn his clan and father's attention and the girl who stakes part of her identity in her devotion to god are doing it because they think it'll be the epitome of a good relationship

YES I LOVE HAWK AND LEAF AS GOOD FRIENDS

Look after she saved reedpaw that one time hawk was so grateful and leaf even had a relatively casual and good relationship with him after an initial distrust of him they seemed on pretty ok terms. I even think it’d be kinda cool if they “fell in love” because they were heavily confused about their own identities and felt like this was how it’s supposed to work so why not.

I just really live for the firesand kits and their interactions with Sasha’s kits as a concept (if squirrelpaw and hawkpaw knew eachother they’d be best friends and rivals that constantly smack talk eachother but secretly carry an admiration for the others virtues i.e. hawk likes squirrels honest and squirrel likes his cleverness. Moth and squirrel sneak off behind their siblings backs to lovingly vent their frustrations)
