Concept: Sherlock Holmes adaptation with Watson providing film noir style voiceover narration, except it’s soon apparent that Watson is a somewhat less-than-reliable narrator.
Though the tone and content of Watson’s voiceover is broadly consistent with the original stories, when compared with the accompanying on-screen events it becomes clear that Watson-the-narrator is frequently, at the very least, delicately understating how things really went down, and occasionally lying through his teeth, particularly when the on-screen “truth” would make Holmes or himself look foolish.
While neither the version of events given by the narration nor the version of events concurrently depicted on screen are particularly comedic in themselves, the combined effect of juxtaposing the two is often outright farcical.
The entire narration is played completely straight, and separate from the action on screen like a later recorded voice over.
Except Holmes gets to comment on it exactly once.
Holmes: (in a conversational aside to on-screen Watson) I suppose when you write about this you’ll claim that [wildly self-serving version of what happened].
Narrator Watson: [what Holmes just said, verbatim]
“For years, I’ve tried to capture him, and I’ve come close, so very close. But each time, he’s narrowly evaded my grasp.”
“For years, that insufferable pipsqueak has interfered with my plans. I haven’t had a moment’s peace of mind.”
The combination of 'unnervingly flawless self-control' with 'occasional tendency to engage in reckless, dangerous, and borderline self-destructive or death-seeking behaviour' in a character is SUCH catnip to me

part of the reason i love archer hawke, as well as just that archer is SO fun to play in da2, is that it feels very true to the kind of rogue that might have grown up travelling from one fereldan farming village to another. leandra even canonically knew the basics of archery and could have taught it to them. and in turn learning how to keep out of sight and fight from a distance from malcolm
it’s super easy for me to imagine that kind of young rogue in lothering, poaching from the bann’s lands to feed their family, maybe even venturing into the wilds, or earning a bit of money here and there defending farmholds from bandits and dangerous wildlife. reminds me a lot of classic rural outlaw folktales. every other fereldan rogue (leliana, nathaniel, sera) is an archer too, and it seems a little more out of place in the narrow streets of kirkwall than dual wielding, which is fun to me for maintaining hawke’s fereldan identity. fun for elf-blooded hawkes, too! i like the eldest sibling behaviour of keeping an eye on the whole battlefield, accustomed to standing back to back with bethany and picking enemies off carver. it also means hawke was probably in a different part of the battlefield at ostagar than carver, which is some good drama when it all went to hell, and if they were seriously separated it could explain the hawkes’ delay in escaping

not to hijack this post but it reminds me of when my dad’s best friend and his wife had just had their first child, and he had life-threatening complications and went into surgery immediately. as soon as my dad heard he got in the car and drove three hours to be there. he walked into the hospital room, and his best friend wasn’t even surprised. with tears in his eyes he said “I know you. I knew you would come.”
