My guys it is starting to work, I've seen some people I know complaining about the writer's strike and turning against them because their favorite shows and/or movie got put on hold. Please do not be fooled like this, this is exactly what the corporations want. It can wait, I promise you will find other things to focus, but writers need this.

I was a grown ass adult before I realized the library was free. I went into the library and asked to join. When they gave me the form to fill out for a library card, I asked if they took credit cards and the librarian had to explain to me that the library was free. You did not pay to join it.

I think some librsries might have you oay a small fee for the card but most dont.
Most don't charge for the card as long as it's your first one. There may be a $5 fee to replace it if you lose it.

Many libraries are even going fine free for late materials, so if you're forgetful like me, it's okay! And we offer e-book and downloadable audiobook services, so you can get books for free even from home!

so yes, free libraries are the default in the US, but not necessarily everywhere in the world. in NZ, for instance, most local libraries that i've encountered either charge a small fee to take out a book or have a membership fee, which is much more in line with how libraries operated historically.
the reason that the library system in philadelphia, for instance, is called "the free library of philadelphia" is that it was chartered in the 1890s as a library free to all, which was an idea that was still coming into vogue during that time period.
but yes! libraries are free here, and they're also one of the few spaces left in the US where you're allowed to exist in public without there being an expectation of spending money! so please! visit your local library! even going in the door helps libraries keep their funding a lot of the time!
Most Canadian-born patrons know libraries are free, but since living in a city with a lot of newcomers, one of the things that's most fun is assuring newcomers that no, for real, promise: membership and the collection is free. We don't even charge late fees anymore (\o/). Money only interacts with our library in a few specific ways:
- printing, which we charge at cost
and comp a significant amount of the time - the second time you need to replace the physical library card, there's a minor charge for the card. However, since it's actually the barcode that matters, you can get around this by just showing your ID, or getting us to give you the barcode (after showing your ID) and using it by number.
- if you put something on HOLD and then don't pick it up, there's a small charge because It's Really A Pain
- and finally if you break something/result in something having to be replaced/lose something/just totally fail to bring it back ever, the replacement cost of the item plus a restocking fee gets charged. If you subsequently bring the item back that part gets removed
