but it also refers to 🏳️‍🌈. it refers to how being part of this community is so often seen - so often can be - something deeply entwined with suffering . state sanctioned violence, hate crimes, AIDS, homelessness, suicide, depression … all over the world , our flag is a risk factor for these things . being part of the queer community statistically means death .

except in this show . in this show , both flags mean. love. life. happiness. being yourself. dare I say sex and healing and magic and serenity .

i wanna shout out this last one—ITS ALL THREAD PAINTING. THE WHOLE THING. it’s. i should have got a close up of it but it’s all thread painted it’s so so cool

& yet MORE quilts…

i wanna shout out the top picture — the skull quilt was so cool first of all & it’s ALSO the artists FIRST QUILT??? it was so incredibly cool & detailed I rly loved it. i also wanna point out the last quilt here, all of these flowers are applique & i had so much trouble keeping from TOUCHING it (which ur not allowed to do ofc). it was so gorgeous. the close up square above it is from the same quilt. just wow!

I agree with a lot of what's been said about the pacing (namely that this already great season could have been even better with an extra beat between eps 5 & 6, and likely another between 7 & 8) but I just want to take a second to remember what a fucking accomplishment this season is.

Like, just off the top of my head: they managed to expand the world-building of the show's pirate universe, add compelling new characters, deepen the central relationship in a genuinely complex and nuanced way with rich character arcs for both, at least suggest at greater complexity and emotional development for many of the background characters, and produce more expansive and technically challenging visuals including some very impressive action and crowd sequences. And they did all that with two fewer episodes, while still maintaining the original tone of the show and keeping run times under 30 minutes apiece.

It's not perfect, and they're not equally successful on all fronts, but it is extremely fucking good, and the fact that it gets anywhere close within those limitations is frankly an astounding artistic achievement

Something something Ed standing alone in his leathers again, having flashbacks to his most violent moments. “Something’s wrong, feels like there’s a storm coming, but I can’t see it.”(it’s your anxiety babe, the storm is in you). “Sorry about your leg.” Oh, a room for all his guilt, to remind him all the time of what a bad person he is (“I’m not a good person, Stede, that’s why I don’t have any friends”)

But he can turn that poison into positivity, right? He gives his weapons away. He’s given the crew a party - look how happy and beautiful they all are. His friends? They feel safe around him. He can share a dance with his boyfriend now, right? The one who loves everything about him. (“Im not loveable” “and you’re scared to do anything about it.”) he can let his guard down, he can do what makes Ed happy…

But nope, the violence is back to haunt him. He throws his arms out to shelter Stede. His friends are being hurt again and it’s his fault. “No no no, it’s me you want, I’ll fucking kill you if you touch him!”

But Stede’s got this, it’s ok. He’s saving them without violence. Ed doesn’t have to kill. “You’re not worth the poison.” He won’t be that man again, it’s not him any more. He’s not the Kraken, he’s not Blackbeard.

But Stede does it. Ed sees his pain though. He goes to comfort him, he knows what it’s like to kill. How it makes you feel like a monster. How much you need someone to be there for you. Like how Stede was there to comfort him as he hid in the bathtub and they talked about their feelings. They can talk it through now, right? He won’t let Stede feel like the Kraken as he did. He won’t let Stede face this alone.

And there are tears in Stede’s eyes, he’s not ok and he needs this, he needs to feel loved, like this didn’t make him a monster, and Ed nods because he wants this too, he wants to feel loved too because he still feels the storm coming (it’s still your anxiety baby, how many more times will your dances be interrupted by violence?)

And if not now, when? He grabs him tight, they both cling to each other desperately, like survivors in a shipwreck.

And he strips off his leathers for the last time, or Stede slips them off him (I wish we had seen them taking the jacket off.) He’s on Stede’s bed and they’re gone. He’s in his t-shirt and his hair is loose. He’s vulnerable and tender and in love, Stede draws the curtains. It’s private and it’s their moment and nobody can see it, not even us. There are fireworks, it’s amazing.

And in the morning he climbs out of bed (gently, letting Stede sleep, he had a long night and he doesn’t see this) and he throws his leathers into the sea. He’s wearing a soft warm robe and eating good food (he tried) and he had a night of intercourse (and orgasms) and he’s in love and he’s loveable and he has all the things he was scared to work for and all the things he chose to live for. Someone was waiting for him after all.

And Ed’s not a pirate anymore. But now Stede is. And Ed watched him take a sip of that poison last night when he killed.

And Ed didn’t tell Stede any of this.
