I think the reason so many LOTR ripoffs fail is because they make their Aragorn analogue the main character, when the entire point of Aragorn is that he’s “the person the villains think is the main character, but is Not.”
Aragorn seems like a traditional King Arthur style hero— he has huge Main Character Energy because he’s supported by destiny, by bloodline, by all these magic artifacts and prophecies, and etc etc. Frodo and Sam are Just Some Guys. Aragorn recognizes that Sauron understandably thinks he’s the main hero of this story ….and he pretends to believe it too, spending the entire series using himself as a diversion to prevent Sauron from seeing Frodo and Sam.
Aragorn’s whole thing is that knows he seems like the Main Hero of this legend to people who don’t know better —- but he also knows that he isn’t, and that his role is just to keep Sauron’s eye on him in order to protect the people around him.
And it works! Sauron is so fixated on defeating his Legendary Destined Archenemy with Extreme Main Character Energy that he completely overlooks the two ordinary little guys who were the real threat to him all along.

I know, I know, gatekeeping the outdoors, that's supposedly bad, right, but I think if you show up to do a hike and you brought a portable speaker with you to play music while you hike, I think, like hear me out, there should be a gate, and someone at the gate should keep you from doing the hike.

Recorded music, anyway. Live music is different rules. If you want to lug an entire cello up a mountain you can do whatever the hell you want.
Carrying a speaker on a hike to make everyone listen to your bullshit, and simply sitting under a tree and playing a fiddle in the woods, are two activities so different they may as well not exist in the same world.
I think the critical difference is that the bringing of recorded music with you ties the space to Elsewhere, whereas the creation of live music with an instrument you brought both binds you to the space, and drags everyone who hears you play into it as well.

i didn't think i had a super strong reaction to bringing a speaker (or a phone call on speakerphone) into the woods but I sat here thinking about the times I've encountered someone else's non-nature noise and wow yes I do!!! music played live in the world draws and reflects energy from the world, even when it's a pre-existing piece being performed because all sound is a product of its environment and only live music has the ability to truly modify itself within and as a result of being in the space, you know?
like, recorded music can only ever really be played at the world rather than in it because its moment of exchange is already past. all you can do is mess with volume and levels. that has its own magic and beauty, being able to listen to the interactions of beings and objects and space at a single moment in time, at will, but that's a personal thing and not collective. if you want that experience outdoors, you should wear headphones.
the exception to this for me though is something like in a city park or at a public beach when some kid has a speaker (or a ghetto blaster like it would have been in my day lol) and people gather within earshot to dance and play and flirt and they're energized by the music, but that's probably because city parks and public beaches aren't intended to be primarily spaces of solitude but of gathering and connection if not celebration?
