On this rewatch, I am counting deaths for Sam Dean and Cas

First one up we have dean electrocuting a monster in water causing a heart attack so severe Sam took him to a faith healer

I’m not sure if this one counts because he never actually dies. He was supposed to and saw a reaper but you know that’s the episode

Up next we have season 1 episode 14, Sam has a vision Dean gets shot by Max. I’m counting this because we see him get shot, still not technically dead dead though

Season 1 episode 22:

Azazel tried, but daddy dearest stopped him long enough for Sam to grab the colt. Then a truck slams into them on the way to the hospital just in case. The episode ends with it looking like all three Winchester boys are dead.

Of course, we know they make it to the hospital season 2 episode 1, but that wraps up season 1.

Season 1 final count: 3 times Dean would’ve been dead if he wasn’t the Main Character TM.

Season 2 has been quiet, but of course all hell breaks loose (season 2 episode 21 and 22) when Jake skewers Sam leaving Dean to make an impossible choice. It’s the First Actual Death of the series, where it’s time to burn or bury— of course neither play out

Dean total: 3

Sam: 1

Season 3 episode 11: the trickster the time loop and the dead Dean, he died over 100 times with poor Sam remembering them all. Sam spends the next few months tracking the trickster and begs to go back. Dean stays alive and we continue on

Season 3 episode 15: Dean vs Hell hound, doesn’t end well. Dean dies and goes to Hell and that’s the end of the season.

Dean death count: approximately 104

Sam: 1

Season 4 Dean is raised from hell, let’s see who’s next

This is a silly one to add but episode 6 Dean gets ghost sickness and gets close to dying of fear. His heart stops briefly. Sam and Bobby take care of the ghost in the nick of time

Episode 8: I didn’t remember this happened, but here Sam gets struck by lightning and dies. Hope who is under a spell wishes for him to die because she thought Sam would come between her and Wes. Wes picks up the cursed coin and Sam comes back to life

This counts okay, during Lucifer Rising, Sam turns into a demon while killing Lilith

it happens so quickly and is over even faster but I’m counting it

Season 4 final count:

Dean: 105

Sam: 3

Up next Season 5

Starting off strong with Episode 1: Cass was smitted by an Archangel after the final seal has been broken. This is a death, but “someone” needed Cass alive

Episode 13: Sam and Dean travel back in time to save their parents from Anna. She impales Sam with a pipe she pulled from the wall. Michael smites Anna and talks to Dean. He brings Sam back.

Episode 15: Wow Sam is having a haaaard time right now. Two hunters, Roy and Walt, come into Sam and Dean’s motel room and wake them up with guns in their faces. Sam gets shot twice in the chest while Dean gets shot once in the chest. They end up in heaven and start looking for Joshua (Cass asked). Eventually they get to the garden and Joshua tells them God won’t help. After the message was delivered, they were sent home.

Episode 22: Final showdown for apocalypse v1. Michael vs Lucifer. Sammy says yes and meets Michael on the battlefield. Dean crashes the whole affair and asks for 5 minutes with Sam. Cass throws a holy fire Molotov at Michael. Lucifer then splatters Cass into pieces. Lucifer starts beating Dean up and Sam catches a glimpse of the impala. Happy memories of him and Dean start playing. Sammy gains control of his body and jumps into Lucifer’s cage in Hell dragging Michael down with him. Cass does come back at the end of the episode but I’m counting this as a death because he literally exploded right in front of our salad.

Then to end the whole shebang, we see Sam standing outside Lisa’s house.

As Chuck says “No doubt, endings are hard. But then again… nothing ever really ends, does it?”

Season 5 Totals

Cass: 2

Sam: 6

Dean: 106

Season 6:

Episode 5: Dean becomes a vampire for an episode— undead counts as dead

Episode 11: Dean asked his dad’s old friend/ doc to stop his heart and summons Tessa to ask Death for help. He wants to get Sam’s soul and his brother Adam back from the box. Death asks him to pick one, obviously he picks Sam. The doc try’s to bring him back, but he’s still talking to Death. Death asks Dean to be death for one day as a bet. If he takes off the ring before the day, no soul. The doc is finally able to get Dean back after 7 mins

Totals:

Dean: 108

Sam: 6

Cass: 2

Season 7:

Episode 1: Cass is coming apart and agrees to put the souls back to purgatory. They do the spell and Cass is sucked into a black hole in the wall and presumably dies. He is then healed mysteriously. That’s when the Leviathan fights back and takes over Cass.

Episode 2: Cass wades into the municipal drinking water allowing leviathan to spread. Cass never walks back out and dean grabs his trench coat.

Episode 4: Dean was put on trial by Osiris, who found him guilty and sentenced to die. Jo is forced to kill dean. She lets gas out from the stove and gets a lighter. Dean gets out of it because Sam stabbed Osiris with a rams horn.

Episode 23: Dean stands to close to exploding Dick and got thrown into purgatory.

totals:

Dean: 110

Sam: 6

Cass: 3

I’m considering episode 1 and 2 and the same death

Season 8:

Episode 19: This one took a while, and this isn’t a real death either. Sam was almost stuck in purgatory trying to complete the trial —>saving Bobby from hell. if Dean hadn’t asked Benny to get them to the seam, he would have been considered dead, so it counts.

Episode 23: As Sam was finishing the trial, Dean found out if he completes it Sam dies. This almost killed him but of course Dean couldn’t let that happen.

Season 8 totals

Sam: 8

Dean: 110

Cass: 3

Season 9:

Episode 3: Cass gets stabbed by April after she tortured him. Gadreel brings him back

Episode 5: Sam gets slashed in the neck by the villain. Villian ate a cat and chameleon part and sneak attacked. Gadreel healed him and now the villain wants to eat him for the ultra healing.

Episode 23: Dean goes in to a fight with Metatron with the first blade. Metatron powered by the angel tablet overpowers Dean and starts beating him up. As Dean brings the first blade back towards him, Metatron stabs him. Dean hangs on for a bit, but he ends up dying in Sam’s arms. Cass breaks the angel tablet and finds out Dean is dead “you drape yourself in the flag of heaven but ultimately, it was about saving one human, right? Well guess what, he’s dead too” we see at the end, Dean wakes up and is a demon. He then runs away with Crowley.

Season 9 totals:

Sam: 9

Cass: 4

Dean: 111

This season all 3 have died at some point, I’d call that an achievement unlocked.

Season 10

Episode 3: Cass’s stolen Grace is burning off quickly and he is getting weaker and weaker. A fight with another angel didn’t go his way and he is on the verge of death before Crowley kills the angel, steals her Grace, and gives it to Cass

Episode 18: Cass seems to be at the verge of death when Metatron puts up sigils. Metatron steals the demon tablet and Cass finds and consumes his stolen Grace.

No one else died season 10 except there was a moment in episode 23 where Dean almost killed Sam using Death’s scythe, but Dean actually swings and hits Death himself. Not counting that for the total. Cass also had the attack dog spell put on him which leads to death, but also not counting that.

Season 10 totals:

Sam: 9

Cass: 6

Dean: 111

Season 11:

Episode 1: Sam gets infected blood in his mouth after the darkness was released. He’s not dead yet, so in episode 2 he figures out holy fire can purify things and so he burns his neck where the illness lives.

Episode 17: Sam gets shot by a werewolf, honestly forgot about this one so I was a little taken aback, but Dean gets the bullet out — Sam just looks real bad — Dean goes out to get wood for the cabin and Sam tells the vics to go and leave him behind. The guy decides to suffocate Sam bc Dean won’t leave without him. Sam is dead by the time Dean gets back. Dean is forced to leave Sammy’s body behind. Dean is taken to a hospital when Sammy takes a deep breath in —it turns out when the guy choked him, it slowed down his heart and breathing so low it only looked like he was dead. Dean takes some pills hell bent on talking to Billie to get Sam back. Billie tells Dean Sam is still alive, but she is taking him. The doctors were able to bring him back. They both count this time, idc

Episode 20: Sam is not doing so hot this season huh. The darkness’s fog gets into the building Sam Dean and the civilians and Sam breathes in the smoke. His hand and body are turning up with black veins. Dean refuses to leave Sam (duh) and gets to Sam inhaling the darkness’s fog. He is the only one not infected. The samulet then glows bright in Deans pocket and God cure him and everyone affected by the fog.

Episode 23: Dean becomes a soul bomb to defeat Amara. He doesn’t die, he gets Chuck to talk to Amara and they go away together, but not before he took the soul bomb away.

Totals:

Sam: 12

Dean: 113

Cass: 6

Season 12

Episode 9: Sam and Dean get caught expelling Lucifer from the president or as the feds think “attempting to assassinate the president”. They are sent to a prison that is basically boxed cells with no interaction with people. A place that “isn’t supposed to exist”A guard sees Sam unconscious during one of their lunches and find both Sam and Dean dead. They are taken the coroners and after a couple of hours pass and they both take a deep breath in. They escape and for the rest of the episode we don’t know what happened. With 5 mins left Billie comes and Dean explains he called Billie while they were in the cell. They made a deal if this is the last time they die and come back, the next death is permanent. A catch, a Winchester has to die at midnight and Mary volunteers. That is when Cass kills Billie.

Episode 12: Cass gets stabbed by Ramiel prince of Hell. He used the lance of Michael, so Cass is unable to heal himself. The wound starts to look black, cracked and veiny. The lance “kills the bad ones fast and the good ones slow and painful”so Cass is currently suffering while literally rotting away. After they defeat ramiel, they break the lance, curing Cass after all “the magic it’s all in the runework, the craftsmenship.

Not related to death, but this is also the episode Cass says I love you, camera cuts to Dean, I love all of you (which needed clarification obviously)(totally not gay) (he’s family) ( totally not husbands)

Episode 23: Cass gets stabbed by Lucifer as he leaves the rift from apocalypse world.

Totals:

Sam: 13

Dean: 114

Cass: 8

Season 12:

Episode 3: we see Dean die through one of patience’s visions when she’s captured by the wraith. She was able to prevent dean from getting stabbed multiple times. this is the same episode Cass wakes up in the empty. Cass comes back in the next episode, annoyed a cosmic entity to do so.

Episode 5: Dean has a stupid plan to kill himself to talk to the many ghosts haunting the place to figure out where the psycho ghost kept their bodies. So he injects himself with a needle and dies, asks Sammy to bring him back in 3 minutes. When it’s time Sammy stabs him with the needle and Dean won’t wake up. Billie shows up and she is now Death. Dean and Billie talk and instead of asking to be brought back, Dean asks her to let the ghosts move on. Billie brings Dean back after showing him his shelf of deaths. None of those books say he dies, and so he doesn’t. (Still counts for the total tho) (totally a coincidence that in the next episode he finds out Cass is back and he is so happy it’s a pretty damn big win)(totally platonic tho)(def no reciprocation) (he literally wanted to die in this episode and the next episode he’s just giggling and kicking his feet)

Episode 18: Dean gets shot by a bullet filled with poison used by the men of letters. The bullet is designed to kill him slowly leading to a gruesome death. The wound looks black and veiny, the same look that infected Chuck. Ketch gives him the antidote.

Episode 21: Sam gets bitten by super vamps from apocalypse world. He’s bleeding out when the vamps drag him away. Cass and Dean run after, but he’s gone. Cass has to drag Dean away “we don’t have time, Dean we can’t save him”. We cut to Sam taking a deep breath in with no bite marks when we see Lucifer had healed him.

I am not counting Jacks deaths as well. All 3 of them are his dad.

Episode 22: Jack stabs himself with an archangel blade while Lucifer has his stolen grace. After Dean kills Lucifer, it’s unclear if the stab wound is lethal or if the grace was returned to him. We find out in episode 1 of season 14, he has no grace and the stab wound was not lethal. I’m counting it

Totals:

Sam: 14

Dean: 117

Cass: 8

Jack: 1

Season 14:

Episode 7-8: Jack is in full system failure with no human explanation. He’s been coughing up blood for a few episodes now. Rowena is able to figure out without his grace he’s going to die. Eventually Cass finds archangel grace and a spell. It doesn’t work and he gets worse. Ep 8: he sticks around for as long as he can, but Jack is officially dead. TFW concoct a plan to bring Jack back and use his soul to replace his grace. Cass goes to see Jack in heaven and finds that the empty has invaded heaven trying to claim Jack. Cass makes a deal to save Jack by letting the empty take him at the moment he experiences true happiness. Jack is the brought back to his body and uses soul magic to sustain himself.

Episode 14: Cass gets poisoned by a Gorgon when the antidote isn’t working. Jack burns off a piece of his soul to heal Cass before he dies.

Episode 17: Nick slams Sam into a truck, starts choking him, and general fight stuff. We don’t see the finishing blow, but we see Dean rushing over and Sam struggling to stay alive. The ambulance is 20 mins out and Sam is not holding on for much longer. Mary sends Jack to heal Sam

Ep. 20: Chuck smites Jack since Dean couldn’t kill him using that kill everything but kills you gun. Sam uses the gun to shoot chuck in the shoulder and Chuck declares welcome to The End. Jack wakes up in the empty thanks to Billie and Chuck opens a rift out of Hell leaking souls from hell, montage of ghosts they’ve ended ends the season

Totals:

Sam: 15

Dean: 117

Cass: 9

Jack: 3

Season 15: fuck how am I here already….

Episode 7: We knew eventually that equalizer gun shot was going to become deadly eventually, but here it officially is. Sammy is dying after Cass experimented with the wound trying to find Chuck. Sam slammed into a wall and was knocked unconscious. According to Sergi, this wound goes down into his soul and out into the world (Chuck). It’s a wound that doesn’t want to be fixed. Sergi applies a tincture and Sam takes a deep breath in while seeing parts of Chucks life. Sergi messed with it and now it’s killing him faster unless Cass gives him what he wants — the key to death. Opens a door to deaths library that the men of letters have somewhere in the bunker. Cass bluffs and Sergi heals Sam, enough that he won’t die. The gunshot wound is still there. Then it’s Deans turn. Lee hooks Dean up to a rig that will drain him of his blood, feeding a marid. Lee leaves Dean alone and he breaks the chair and gets out of the chair he was tied to. The marid gets mad and starts breaking out of its cage. Dean kills it and walks out ready to deal with Lee.

Episode 13: Cass asks Jack to “almost kill him” by draining his life force and storing it in a flask so Cass can go into the empty and talk to Meg. The empty disguises themselves into her and lets Cass talk to Ruby about the occultum. Jack gives him the life force back with the location.

Episode 18: Jack lit the fuse last episode and is now coming apart. Cass asks Billie to get it to stop but she can’t. Instead she takes him to the empty to explode. He seems to be fine after but still in the empty. The empty is pisssssed and blames Jack. Billie grabs him before he gets hurt. Then, comes death. Dean and Cass go looking for Billie to kill her for “killing their friends” except, she’s not the one doing it. Dean had already cut her with her scythe which is killing her, but he doesn’t know that either. Billie decides the last thing she’ll do before dying is killing Dean. She starts going after them when Cass seals them in the dungeon and puts up warding. It won’t hold for long, so Cass remembers his deal with the empty. It’ll be summoned when he experiences true happiness, so Cass declared his love for Dean, summoning the empty and killing Billie and himself. Cass dies for the final time.

Ep 20: Dean dies for the final time by hunting a vampire nest. As he’s fighting one he gets rammed into an old rusty pipe. Sam kills the vamp and comforts his brother as he dies. When Sam dies a final time, he is old and grey. Had a normal life, a kid. He meets Dean in heaven and the story is over.

Supernatural Death Totals:

Sam: 17

Dean: 119

Cass: 11

Jack: 4

I knew the totals were going to be high, but damn. Everyone except the 3 year old has died over a dozen times in 15 years. Jack you were alive for 3 years and died 4 times, you truly are a Winchester 🤍

"you need to go so you can be safe" vs. "I don't want to leave you"

Arthur & Merlin | 2.06 "Beauty and the Beast - Part 2"

Dean and Cas are very similar in that they both deal with significant self-worth issues, were treated as weapons for a lot of their lives and were raised like soldiers, and had their worth routinely tied to their ability to kill and defend their families. But their responses to making a mistake are so... very very different most of the time?

Cas fucks up and immediately begins looking for ways to prove himself again and get anyone he's let down to see that he cares about them and he can fix it. His belief that he can make things right is incredibly persistent and can even feel a little overbearing on occasion? Dean fucks up and despairs. He sees his mistakes as a death sentence—as something that completely condemns him. He makes a mistake and believes he can never atone and has no way of making it better. In the worst case, he thinks the best favor he could do the world around him is dying to rid the world of the stain of him. He's too accepting of being doomed by consequences. I think this makes Cas a really important foil for Dean and also probably lends to Dean's attraction to him.

Cas is the guy who tilts his head and says "You don't think you deserve to be saved?" Not just because he thinks Dean is a good person to the very core but because Cas believes you can fix anything, and as much as I think this difference creates conflict between the two of them on occasion, I also think that's an important and inspiring trait in a friend for someone with Dean's hangups.

And yes this is connected to my post yesterday about poor little meow meows. I think this lends to the deangirl/casgirl divide where it crops up. I wonder if for some casgirls, Dean's lack of earnest attempts to "make up" for his mistakes by trying to get his friends/family to see him as "worthy" of forgiveness after a mistake comes off as unfeeling. I see Dean feel he's made a mistake and withdrawal (sometimes with a verbal expression of regret, sometimes not) and I understand his withdrawal as deep-seated despair. He can never "make up" for anything so he doesn't try to do that—he just accepts consequences and doesn't usually fight them. He also doesn't usually bother to separate out what he is and isn't sorry for because he blames himself for what was actually his fault and what wasn't his fault and that probably looks like an emotional disconnect for some people.

In contrast, I think for deangirls like me, Cas's persistent belief that he can fix any mistake he's made—while very earnest and typically endearing—can come across as a refusal to fully understand that actions have consequences. It can come off as a refusal to genuinely accept responsibility for your decisions. If you believe you can always fix any mistake you make, you can develop a moral hazard problem. You begin to see relationships as transactional situations where you can "pay" to do the thing you knew in advance you shouldn't do, believing you can always just absolve yourself afterwards by paying some kind of "making up" tax. This also can ultimately look unfeeling and like an emotional disconnect.

Okay a clarification here because this could be worded more clearly (and I'm probably still not going to be happy with it grrr but anyway):

When I am talking about Cas seeking a fix and Dean despairing after a mistake, I do NOT mean that Dean doesn't clean up messes he's made. I mean that after a mistake with large narrative consequences, after the larger mess is cleaned up (or while it is being cleaned up), Cas seeks out additional heroic acts to try and "solve" any interpersonal fallout of his larger narrative mistake, using Dean or Claire or the angels or someone else as a figure to seek redemption from.

If Dean believes it's his fault that an apocalypse happened, Dean is going to clean up the mess, but if Sam and Cas are pissed at him, Dean is not going to say to himself, "I can fix this interpersonal fallout with a further act of heroism" and seek out a mission to try and get himself out of the dog house.

Take Dean's role in Kevin's demise as an example. Dean trusted the wrong angel and he was silent about Gadreel's possession when he knew he should have told the truth and those decisions lead in part to Kevin's death. Dean gets Gadreel out of Sam (cleaning up the mess as best he can) and then withdraws into drinking. He takes on a murder curse because he believes he deserves to die and everyone would be better off without him around. Cas might do something similarly reckless after a mistake because that's absolutely in his wheelhouse, but instead of out of despair, it would likely (season 11 Cas excepted) be a situation where Cas was trying to redeem himself and pleading with Dean or someone else to believe that he can "Make it up" to them with an additional heroic act. On the other hand, I don't think Dean saw the Mark of Cain as a way of solving a single interpersonal issue generated by the Gadreel incident. It was a way to rid the world of him while making his body useful for something.

I am love’s weakest soldier. I don’t believe in making that shit work. Don’t like their family that they’re super close to? Break up. Don’t like their friends? Break up. Wedding planning drama? Break up or elope. They cheated? IMMEDIATE break up. They’re jealous? Break up. They don’t like your pet? Break up. You hate the squalor of their apartment? You’re not obligated to teach a grown adult how to do basic chores, break up. They keep trying to start arguments? Break up. There is nothing definably wrong with them but you’re not feeling it? Out the door.

I get fighting for your relationship in some of these scenarios if you share assets or are married but if you’re just dating and they’re already making your life worse than it would be if you were single, go be single.

Most of the knights know Merlin has magic and have never spoken a word of it, but not in a “we have to protect him” way but in a “I’ve seen what that feral little man is capable of and I would like to not get hit in the head by a random falling tree branch thank you” way
